Faith - Faith, “it became the cornerstone” [Psalms 118:22]. For the one who has faith in Hashem, whose glory fills the whole Earth, and whose eyes are open upon all the ways of human beings, to repay each person according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds. A righteous person shall live through his faithfulness, because certainly he will be careful in the fulfillment of all the commandments and their precise details. And he should be eager in [performing] the commandments, and careful to be clean from every sin, and exert himself like a lion for the service of his Creator, and not back down in the face of anything. For his eyes will see, and his heart will understand, that the name of Hashem is called upon him, and His eyes range about the whole Earth. An eye sees, an ear hears, and all his deeds are recorded in a book [Avot 2:1]. And he should feel ashamed before him, and serve Him with a perfect service — with fear, love, and great joy. And he will believe with complete faith that there is a good reward for the righteous, according to the greatness of the deed, and according to the difficulty is the reward [Avot 5:23]. And the punishment for the wicked is severe and bitter, over all of their transgressions, and a balance and scales of justice are in the hand of Hashem, to repay each person according to his ways — according to his level, understanding, and ability, and according to the effort and the joy, as two battle lines are set opposite one another.

And there is yet another fence for faith, from which come many good qualities — namely, to believe in [Hashem’s] providence, may He be blessed, over the lower beings in every single detail, and that “no person bruises his finger below unless they decree it upon him above” (Chullin 7b). And both good and evil come from the mouth of the Most High, whether by the hand of heaven or by the hand of man, for the Omnipresent has many messengers, for good or for bad. And “he gives you power to be successful” (Deutoronomy 8:18), for “not to the wise [belongs] bread, nor to the swift [belongs] the race”. Consequently, one should not be concerned for the loss of his money when it comes to serving his Creator and doing his will, and he should not exert himself to become wealthy through something forbidden. Rather, he should conduct his affairs with judgement, properly and uprightly, according to the Torah. And he should not become angry, flatter [others], hate his fellow, take revenge, or bear a grudge, for he knows and believes that Hashem said to him, “Curse”, and everything is from him, to diminish his liability [for sin], for his own benefit. “A G-d of truth and without iniquity, he is just and right” (Deutoronomy 32:4). “Hashem is righteous in all his ways, and gracious in all his works” (Psalms 145:17). And all that the Merciful One does, he does for the good (Berakhot 60b). And thereby one should take upon himself the judgement of heaven with joy, and not loathe rebuke.

And the root of everything is to trust in all the words of the Torah and of the Sages. And if his understanding cannot accept [something they say], he should attribute [the difficulty] to a deficiency of his own knowledge, and the limitation of his comprehension, trusting completely that all of their words are living, enduring, and trustworthy forever and for all eternity. Come and see how profound the words of the Sages are, for they said that the entire Torah is contained and embedded within the quality of faith. And many say with their mouths that they are believers, descendents of believers, but their actions contradict [what they say], and the action comes and overrides the speech. And for everything, G-d will bring him into judgement for having walked in darkness. Aside from the punishment for the transgression himself, there is also another [punishment] — he will surely be punished for being among those who are lacking in faith. Or if he does believe, and nevertheless does not take care to walk in the proper path, this is brazenness and the forehead [i.e. shamelessness] of a harlot.

And behold, these commandments — to believe in Hashem’s existence and in his providence — are counted amongst the 613 commandments. And these mitzvot are ever-present, in that one can fulfill them at all times and at every moment through thought alone. Behold therefore it is good for a man to keep this on his lips and not forget it in his heart, and from time to time the Israelite servant should say, “What is [the matter] with you, my [evil] inclination? Will you always pursue me? Hashem will rebuke you, Satan, for I am a Yehudi son of a Yehudi [on the significance of Yehudi, see Megillah 13a], and I trust with complete faith in the existence of Hashem, who is before me always, and in his providence over each individual down to the finest details, and that he pays a good reward for the slightest good thought, statement, or action, and [metes out] a harsh and bitter punishment for every evil action, even for light speech and for every evil thought. See therefore that it is proper for me to do such and such, to behave in this way in this manner, and to withdraw my hand, be careful, and keep myself away from such and such, until my conduct becomes pure and upright, in thought, speech, and action, [so] that there should not be found in them anything devious or crooked, so that my faith should not prove false. Thus I will do and I will not deviate [from it].” And such and such things the living should take to heart, and should keep them constantly in his mind, and delve deeply into them, at length and breadth, to walk in the paths of faith. Then his hands shall [themselves] be faith — [that is], hands that demonstrate that his faith is genuine [through doing actions that show his faith]. Thus faith is good, to merit the life of the World to Come, a secure resting place, and, above all, to bring pleasure before the One who dwells in His abode.
