Mourning - Mourning over the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash [the Temple] is something that depends on action, and especially during the period of the Three Weeks, by day and night [one should] place ashes on the place where the Tefillin are laid, sit beside the Mezuzah, and recite the order of the Tikkun Chatzot. In truth, the action is not the core [of mourning], rather one must have an eye that weeps bitterly and a broken and crushed heart — like one mourning for his mother, gloomy, he should sigh with “brokenness of the loins” [i.e. being crushed by grief] over the sorrow of Heaven. And all is proportional to one’s knowledge, greatness of love [of Heaven], and the reward of his soul. And see the truth is that we are greatly diminished, and there is no one among us who knows what we are lacking, what we have lost, what we have caused through our many sins, what the exile of the Shekhinah is like, and [the extent of] the suffering of the upper and lower beings. Over this, all who are sorrowful should grieve, [but] in any case every man isn’t obligated except according to his [own] capacity. And he should imagine as though his mother were girded with sackcloth, wearing black [garments] and wrapping herself in black [garments], crying out bitterly — a voice heard in Ramah [on high, but see Jeremiah 31:15 snd other verses] — moaning like a dove. What does the language say? (Sanhedrin 46a): “I am distressed about my head, I am distressed about my arm”. “I have reared and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me” (Isaiah 1:2). And like this and that the living should take to heart things that embitter the heart. He should pour out his soul with a wailing voice; perhaps he will merit to see the consolation of Zion and the rebuilding of our Temple and our glory, that it be speedily rebuilt in our days, Amen.

And from the conclusion of the matter [in this paragraph], you will hear how bad and bitter the actions that a few men and women do are, who gather together to rejoice in social merriment on the nights after Shabbat and other nights, particularly in the winter nights, and indulge in frivolous merriment, eating, drinking, playing music, and singing songs of lust and of idolaters. Woe to them! Woe upon them, since without a doubt their joy will be turned into sorrow, either in this world or the world to come, if they do not take to heart to return [that is, do teshuvah]. For besides the several prohibitions that they transgress — [such as the prohibition against sitting in] a gathering of scoffers and obscene speech in sensual songs — our Rabbis of blessed memory say (Sotah 48a) “an ear that listens to song will be uprooted”, and further, “A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him” (Proverbs 17:25), for the Holy One, blessed be He will say, “Oy! Cruel children! A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping; Rachel is weeping for her Children” (Jeremiah 31:14). And she is like a maiden girded with sackcloth, “and Hashem will roar from on high, and from His holy habitation He will raise his voice; He will roar mightily over His dwelling place” [Jeremiah 25:30]. And the angels of peace weep bitterly, and all the host of Heaven on high, the righteous and the pious, and our righteous Messiah are weeping and mourning, and all over the destruction of the Temple that was destroyed due to our sins, and we at that time will be sitting and singing, rejoicing and making merry in social revelry — this is nothing except evil-heartedness and blindness. Whoever is fearful [of Heaven] and tender-hearted, upon hearing words such as these, should take to heart not to go anymore to social revelry of this sort, or even to a non-obligatory meal. Rather, “in all labour there is profit” [Proverbs 14:23], and he should not rejoice except in the joy of a mitzvah, and through this Israel will rejoice in its Maker.

And included in the commandment of [someone] mourning is that when a dead [relative] of his dies whom he is obligated to mourn for, is that he should be careful to fulfill the laws of morning as proper, as our Sages of blessed memory established, [and] as is explained in Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah Chapter 342. And many ignorant people do not know to be careful due to a lack of knowledge, and study words of Torah, wear leather shoes, and seek to distract themselves from the mourning. And the wise should be prudent, for at the time when the forces of judgement are upon him he must be careful to fulfill every matter properly and to accept upon himself the judgement of heaven. And he shall surely weep for the three days [designated] for weeping; a living man should complain, a man over his sins [Lamentations 3:39]. And for the entirety of the seven days, one should occupy himself with eulogizing [the deceased], recounting the virtues of the deceased and every good quality that was found in him. And he should study the laws of mourning, or sorrowful [Torah] words, in such a way that he does not shift his thoughts from mourning, for [the sages] prohibited even engaging in childish chatter so that he won’t divert his attention. And when he fulfills the words of the Sages, he is assured that he will not continue to grieve anymore. And it is fitting for every person, when a misfortune befalls him, G-d forbid, to seek books on the laws of mourning. And if he doesn’t know the holy tongue (Hebrew), he should seek books in foreign languages, like the Shulchan Aruch in another language and the book “Me-am Lo-ez” on Parshah Vayechi [Genesis 47:28-50:26] and the like. And this is the whole [purpose] of man, that he should seek to know what he should do according to the law, from the mouths of Sages or from books, and he will not transgress the will of his Creator, and through this there will be joy in his dwelling.

And specifically over one’s father and mother it is proper to show increased mourning in all twelve months, and not to go to [any] revelry or feast, and not visit any [other] person, whether for Shabbat or festivals. Consequently, he should increase his study for their rest and the elevation of their souls, and he should not go out to stroll at all, and should always think: “perhaps they are suffering, and here I am enjoying myself”. And one should not say, “What [good] will my mourning over them bring? Can I bring them back through this? Of course not!” For they said in the Aggadah, which was brought by the Ramban of blessed memory in the book Torat HaAdam (page 27b), that Moshe our teacher, peace be upon him, said “Joshua, put on black [garments], and cover yourself in black, and be careful regarding the honor of this downtrodden one”, see there. This teaches us that everything that demonstrates mourning over the soul’s passing is an honor to it. However, one should not follow the custom of certain places that wear weekday garments on Shabbat, even on the Shabbat that falls within the seven [days of mourning], according to the words of the Rav, the Arizal of blessed memory, from whose mouth we live. The righteous should hold firmly to walk in the holy path, for all His ways are justice, and His words are life.
