Pele Yoetz · Pele Yoetz, Chapter 9

  1. 1

Eating and Drinking - Eating and drinking fall into three categories: commanded, permitted, and forbidden. And it is possible for one to make all of his meals a commanded meal when these conditions are met — conditions stated in truth by the Sages from whose mouths we live. The first is that he must intend in his eating that he should be healthy and strong for the service of G-d, blessed be His name, and to fulfill “the merciful man does good to his own soul” (Proverbs 11:17). That is to say, to separate out and bring to light all the sparks of holiness that are attached to everything he eats and that he drinks. And one must pray for his food before every meal, and this is a great obligation as explained in the Zohar (Exodus, page 62). (And I the insignificant one have arranged a text of prayer, to express the intentions we mentioned, because there is benefit in uttering them verbally, to help the heart remember. It will also help bring holiness upon the eating, especially [when] one’s intention is for the sake of Heaven, and I placed it in Beit Tefillat). And see what is written in the holy book “Reishit Chochmah” (Gate of Holiness Chapter 15), with one’s own eyes they will see the intentions of eating, which correspond in their measures with the sacrificial offerings. Happy is one born of a woman who has the means to build his upper chambers in the heavens through his meals, provided that he direct his heart toward Heaven, and do these things according to halakhah. And “one of clean hands will increase in strength” (Job 17:9) — [that is,] he should be careful with washing the hands properly according to the enactment of the Sages.

  2. 2

And he should clothe himself in awe when he comes to bless his Creator who prepared his food and other pleasures [he enjoys] — how very careful one must be to recite the blessings as enacted, letter by letter, word by word. And all the more so when mentioning the Name of G-d — all his bones should be seized by trembling. For it is the King, the Lord of Hosts, high and exalted that he is blessing, and if he is not careful, G-d forbid, he blasphemes Hashem, and the [quality of the] words follow the intentions of the heart. Thus one must be careful in all blessings, particularly in blessings pertaining to things one enjoys, and even more so in the blessings over bread which are a Torah obligation. Just because it is long, it should not be hurried, rather it should [be recited] in order as prescribed and in accordance with Halakhah. And this is something that common sense dictates and the eye sees in the ordinary way of the world, even in the blessing of a commoner, all the more so when he comes to bless the King of Glory, awesome and fearsome, who in his great kindness allowed us to bless him and remember his name, honored and awe-inspiring. And the commandment will be accounted for us, and he will establish for us reward and blessing for our blessing, thus we must be careful to say [the blessing] as per Halakhah. And a fence for this is to say every blessing with a loud voice, for the voice spurs intentionality, and he will know with certainty if he blessed, and not be in doubt, and he will merit and cause others to merit to answer “Amen” after him, and those who are not proficient will learn from him. And one must also be careful to uphold the words of our Sages of blessed memory to dip the piece of bread in salt three times, and he should not transgress this when possible, for all their words stand at the heights of the world.

  3. 3

And one must sit honorably at the table, for he eats at the table of the King. And [we see this in] the well-known story about Rav Rabbi Yisroel Najara, [which took place in] the time of the Ari of blessed memory — he would sing at the table with a sweet voice, and ministering angels would gather like at the festivities of a bride and groom. And his arms were exposed due to the heat, and a voice from Heaven descended [saying] “flee from this man, who diminishes the honor of Heaven, for he doesn’t sit honorably at the table that is before Hashem”, and immediately they all departed. And the Ari was looking at this great sight from his home, and he revealed his secret to Rabbi Yisrael Najara, and he trembled greatly, and he made himself presentable and sat honorably, and he sang as before, and the ministering angels returned and gathered as before. Therefore, one who fears the lord should [have his] entire [body] “speak honor” [i.e. be presentable]. And one must be careful to eat with manners, and not like the ravenous and the gluttonous about whom it is said in the holy Zohar (Pinchas, Folio 246): they are from the side of Esau, as it is written concerning him (Genesis 25:30) ‘please feed me’, and he is despised and rejected in the eyes of G-d and man.

  4. 4

And likewise, one must be careful to eat [only] until he is satisfied, and he should not fill his belly to [the point of] bloating the stomach with coarse [i.e. gluttonous] eating, for there wickedness settles — everyone who goes on [his] belly builds a dwelling place for the evil inclination. For so wrote the Kabbalists, that whatever one adds [to his eating] on a weekday beyond the amount needed for his satiation adds strength to the “Other Side” and strengthens his evil inclination so that it may overpower him. And all the more so, one who indulges in optional meals and social merriment adds great strength to the “Other Side”. For just as a mitzvah is elevated and adds strength to the heavenly retinue when it is performed by many, by the same token, a transgression that is committed by many is magnified and adds strength to the “Other Side”. And the sages of Mussar have already written how many harms one who eats more than [the amount] needed for his satisfaction causes: 1. He transgresses the prohibitions of “do not destroy/waste”. Furthermore, he wastes the time [he spent] eating, and the time of relieving himself. And if the stomach becomes upset and he will be preoccupied [because of it], then [there are] three periods of time [lost]. And if he becomes ill and dies, then he is responsible for his own life. Thus one who guards his body should distance himself from eating and drinking excessively — he should not eat except when hungry, and he should not eat until he is completely full, but [he should stop] a little before. And as the Ra’avad wrote, one who withdraws his hand from food which is pleasant to his palate for the atonement of sins, it is considered as though he had fasted, and as [though he had offered] a sacrifice of atonement (Rabbeinu Yonah in the book Yesod Hateshuva). And this person is prudent, for he eats to satisfy himself, yet [because he restrained himself from excess] it is considered as though he had fasted. And one who eats for the sake of Heaven should not pursue that which is pleasant to the palate but harmful to the body — rather, [he should choose] that which is beneficial to the body even though it is not so pleasant to his palate. And even more so one should refrain from excessive drinking, for it is a fire [which] consumes until destruction, and mighty are all that it has slain. Many drank, they drank “shod”, [and] devastation [shod] and destruction [came] within their borders. It is bad for them and bad for the world. And already the Sages spoke at great length in condemning them. And specifically the Torah scholar, the pain is greater if he drinks, and departs from proper conduct among the common people, for the Name of Heaven is desecrated through him. And fortunate is the discerning person who conducts his affairs with judgement.

  5. 5

It is written (Proverbs 32:2): “and put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite”. How very much one must be careful [to avoid] any trace of prohibition connected with eating! For it is found that the body is nourished through something forbidden, and the soul becomes guilty — he goes from evil to evil, for “her impurity is in her skirts” [Lamentations 1:9], and she will not be able to attain the paths of life, to fear and to love Hashem, the honored and awesome, and to serve Him with a perfect service. Therefore one must be careful and diligent, and keep watch over the slaughterers, that they be trustworthy, proficient, and greatly G-d fearing. And he should urge the members of his household that they should very thoroughly inspect as much as they are able regarding the prohibition of worms [in food], and not eat a fruit in which worms grow until he first cuts it open and inspects it. And likewise one must be very careful about the mixing of mosquitoes and fleas and all kinds of tiny creeping creatures that fall into food during the summer days, even without one’s knowledge. And one must be proficient in the laws of wines and foods regarding contact with non-Jews, and [the laws of something] having been out of sight, and the like. And how good and how pleasant it is to conduct oneself with restraint, and to flee from a hundred gates of what is permitted, in order not to enter through one gate of what is forbidden. For “all the labour of man is for his mouth” (Ecclesiastes 6:7), and “he who guards his mouth and his speech keeps his soul from troubles” (Proverbs 21:23).

  6. 6

And one must be careful not to be strict to [i.e. become upset at] his household members over anything, and included in this are matters related to eating, even if she burned his cooked dish and did not make it in a way that suits him; he should not treat an inadvertent act as [if it were] intentional, and something unavoidable as if it were done willingly. And he should not be angry at his wife, servants, or the members of his household, for the way which one measures is the way Heaven judges him, and it is written (Job 11:13-14): “If I would reject the claim of my male and female servant when they contend with me, then what would I do when G-d rises and calls [me] to account. What would I answer him?” Reflect deeply on this and overlook [offenses] in your own standards, for more than your wife and servants are obligated in your honor and your service, you are liable in the honor and service of your Creator.

  7. 7

And one must be careful to say words of Torah at the table, and not let [the meal] pass without saying [passages of] Scripture or Mishnah. And when he is in the company of people, if he is capable of doing so, his mouth should utter wisdom to bring merit to himself and to [the] others with him, and if he is not capable of doing so or if circumstances don’t work out for him, in any case, he should learn privately, by himself, some Mishnah that is fluent in his mouth, like “All Israel [has a share in the World to Come]…” or “Rabbi Chaninya [son of Akashya says that the Holy One wished to make Israel meritorious etc.]” and the like, and whoever does more is praiseworthy. And since the Holy Zohar greatly emphasized (Exodus 157b) the praise that reaches above [in Heaven through] remembering the Temple at one’s table and being distressed and worried over its absence, I have therefore made it my practice to say this Baraita at the table in order thereby also to fulfill the obligation of [saying] words of Torah — It is taught [in a Baraita]: Rabbi Yose says, “one time I was walking on the road and entered a ruin, one of the ruins of Jerusalem to pray etc.” (Berachot 3a). It is taught [in a Baraita], Rabbi Eliezer says, “there are three watches of the night etc.” (Berachot 3a). “Yehuda son of Teima says etc.” (Avot 5:20). And on Shabbat I am accustomed to say the Mishnah of Yehuda son of Teima and the teaching “Rabbi Yohanan said in the name of Rabbi Yose, whoever delights in Shabbat, they give him an inheritance without boundaries etc.” (Shabbat 118a). “Rabbi Chananya son of Akasha etc.”. And the words should follow the intentions of the heart, at a time of sadness [one should express] sadness, and at a time of joy, joy.

  8. 8

And for he whom Hashem has expanded his borders [i.e. given him material wealth], how pleasant is his lot if he is careful to give a portion from his meal to the poor who lacks someone to provide for him, [then G-d] will grant him abundance in this world and in the World to Come. And how good is it to raise a male or female orphan in one’s house, for in this one’s righteousness endures forever in each and every meal. And for him who lacks the means, he should intend to fulfill this by feeding his sons and daughters, for this too is called engaging in charity at all times. And on Shabbat and festivals it is proper for every man to preside over his table — he should raise his voice to honor his creator with the grace [of his voice] that [G-d] has endowed him with.

  9. 9

One is liable in mayim aharonim [rinsing the fingertips with water after a meal of bread] in the house and outside, in sitting and in going. And many have transgressed and have done away with the washing, and especially travelers. And one must be even more careful with washing the hands before eating, and he who transgresses the words of the Sages is liable to death (Berachot 4b), and proportional to the pain/effort is the reward.

  10. 10

And in a mitzvah meal one must be careful that their gain [is not overshadowed by] their loss through some matter that is not proper, such as scoffing, contentious speech, verbal mistreatment, jesting, frivolity, and the like. Rather, the fear of heaven should always be upon him as a covering, and through this his eating will be accepted as a burnt offering. And when he behaves properly according to the Torah, his table will be an altar of atonement.

  11. 11

And one must say the Birkat Hamazon [blessings after a meal on bread] with pleasure and with a loud voice and with gladness of the heart. For when he takes to heart the words that come out of his mouth and concentrates on them deeply, it is impossible not to rejoice. And as is revealed in the words of the Holy Zohar (Exodus Folio 218), there is a great need and obligation for one to do everything possible to recite Birkat Hamazon with joy. And a great fence for intention, is to say the blessings with closed eyes or facing downwards and the heart [directed] upward. And one should have intention in the four blessings corresponding to the four letters of the [Divine] Name to cause an abundance and blessing to flow in the four worlds — Atzilut, Beriyah, Yetzirah, [and] Asiyah. Happy is one raised by a woman who merits this! And as is written in Sefer Hahinuch (Mitzvah 430), there is a received tradition that whoever is careful regarding Birkat HaMazon, his sustenance is readily provided with dignity all the days of his life. Go and infer from the reward that [through the blessing after meals] he gives great satisfaction to his Creator, and let all your deeds be for the sake of Heaven.
