Pele Yoetz · Pele Yoetz, Chapter 6

  1. 1

Love of fellows - It is well-known how great a virtue love of neighbors is, to the point that our Rabbis of blessed memory said (Jerusalem Talmud Nedarim 9:4) “Love your neighbor as yourself” - this is a core principle of the Torah, and our Rabbis of blessed memory explained (Shabbat 31a): their intention is to say “what is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor”. And behold, in proportion to the greatness of the good [of this virtue], so too does a person’s evil inclination grow stronger against him all day, until, because of our sins, [particularly] through the sin of baseless hatred, our cities are destroyed, our Temple lies desolate, and we are exiled from our land. Yet the Satan still dances among us, accusing us. Every person turns to his own gain and does not worry about the misfortune of his fellow, and there are those who delight in their distress, and those who for the sake of enjoyment, however slight, swallow one another alive. Woe to the eyes that see such things! For our eyes will fail from waiting - we have waited for salvation, but there is no savior as long as this trait is found among us. And thus one must strengthen himself to arouse this love [for others]. And the particulars of love for one’s neighbors has already been explained extensively in “Sefer HaBerit”, and I will present it briefly. And it is, that one must rise to the principle of “turn from evil and do good” (Psalms 34:66): one must turn from evil in speech and actions.

  2. 2

Regarding speech - what is hateful to you, do not do to your friend. One must be careful to guard oneself from saying to his friend, or about his friend, anything that he would not want said about him — this includes harmful speech [lashon hara], verbal mistreatment, and many similar things. And likewise in this manner one must turn away from evil.

  3. 3

In practice, [one should] not harm another or cause him any damage — [that is,] anything that he would not want others to do to him. And one must delve deeply into this, because the deceptions of the evil inclination are many. And even more so one must be careful in a situation where there is financial loss, for one is prone to be lenient for himself and be drawn to the profit even at the expense of his friend. And thus it is not in vain that [the sages] say (Eruvin 14b) [source incorrect in the text, really Eruvin 65b]: “a man is recognized by his purse”. Happy is the man that fears Hashem and loves Hashem with all his might [wealth] and does not incline after profit.

  4. 4

And similarly one must fulfill the mitzvah of “and do good” in speech and in action. In speech, [one should] say good and proper things to make people happy: for example, by sharing good news, giving good advice, and removing obstacles from another person’s path, [i.e.] by informing him if one becomes aware that any harm may befall him in any way, and comforting him in his time of distress, and many other similar things. And in action, one should perform acts of kindness, both physically and financially. Just as one would want others to act for him, and to have mercy upon him, and inconvenience themselves to have mercy on him, likewise he should act in order to perform acts of kindness and fulfill the mitzvah of loving your neighbor as yourself. “Happy is the man who does this and the son of man who lays hold on it” (Isaiah 56:2). “According to the pain is the reward” (Avot), for according to the pain one gives satisfaction to his creator. And just as a father has compassion on his children and “a brother is born for adversity” (Proverbs 17:17) [see Rashi there for what this means], so too each person should help his fellow, for “we are all one man’s sons” (Genesis 42:11); we are brothers. And just as one cares for one of his limbs, so to one must care for every person of Israel, for all of us are like one person; like one body.

  5. 5

And see, a person loves himself, his son, and his brother because his nature requires him to. But when it comes to his friend, in a case where he thinks that there is a financial loss or physical exertion [in helping him], his love for himself overpowers him. And all the more so because the matter is a great mitzvah, a person’s [evil] inclination grows stronger against him to cause him to pass over the will of his Creator so that he should lose a great good. [Thus] one must strengthen himself against his [evil] inclination, be concerned for the honor of his Creator, and awaken the love [within himself]. And fortunate is Israel! How much effort they exert, and how many burdens they endure, and how much money they spend for the sake of mitzvot and good deeds, how meritorious is their portion! But here lies the problem: there are great mizvot that no one seeks out since people do not consider them as being such important mitzvot. And if it is said (Avot 4:2): “Be as quick in performing a minor mitzvah as a major one”, for you do not know the reward given for the mitzvot, even more so with a mitzvah as great as [loving a fellow], which has included in it love of kindness and love of fellows and the ways of peace, it is proper to pursue it like one who pursues life [itself]. And since the [evil] inclination is [always] close, producing forty-nine arguments to declare the creeping creature pure and to favor one’s own self-interest, and all the more so because this matter involves several considerations, such that one who fears the word of Hashem is confused and does not know which way is the path of light, the recommended counsel is to carry out the teaching of the Tanna that said (Avot 4:14): “do not rely upon your own understanding”. And this is a core principle of the whole Torah, and all the more so in monetary matters, “He who walks with the wise shall be wise” (Proverbs 13:20), and he will reach the paths of life.

  6. 6

And the core of the mitzvah of love is in the heart, that one must not rejoice in the misfortune of his friend, G-d forbid, rather one must be happy in his successes and distressed over his pain until the point that he prays for him. And the way to acquire this love is to take to heart the following teaching of the Sages (Chagigah 15b): that even at the time the wicked are suffering the Shekhinah (Divine Presence) is distressed, what expression does does he utter? etc. And from this [we learn] that when a person is comfortable, the Shekhinah is also comfortable. Therefore, a person who loves G-d ought to rejoice in the joy of the Holy One, blessed is He, and the Shekhinah, and to be distressed in its suffering. And further, when a person is at ease and has wealth and things, he will not be prevented from increasing in mitzvot and good deeds, and [in this] there is satisfaction for our Creator. This is not the case with a person in distress, whose “heart is not with him”, and he falls short in the service of Hashem, may He be blessed. And poverty undermines every good quality, and therefore [he may] transgress the will of his Creator and cause bitterness to the one who brought him into being.

  7. 7

And from all that we have said, a wise person will understand that one should rejoice greatly when he sees people doing the will of their Creator, and should feel deep distress in his soul over those who commit transgression. And even if he himself falls short in his service of the Creator, he should not desire that his friend also be like him, so that “the trouble of many will be the consolation of the fools”. To what can this matter be compared? To a noblewoman who has ten sons, and the king commanded them to provide her with food and support her and provide her with everything that she lacks. And it happened one day that one of the king’s sons violated the decree and did not give his mother the portion [that was due of him]. Even though he will surely be punished, in any case the son loves his mother and is pained over failing to provide his portion, [and] he will surely at ask whether at least his brothers fulfilled their obligation, for in this will be half of his comfort. And if they say that all of them acted treacherously as he did, his sorrow for his mother will increase as she cries and sobs because she was left in hunger and thirst, utterly destitute. And the lesson of the parable is self-evident. And further one should rejoice in the good of his friend since the many blessings will increase the [observance of] mitzvot and good deeds, and through the increase of the performance of mitzvot and good deeds, good comes to him as well. For his sins will not tip the entire world towards guilt, for he will surely be punished for all the harm that he causes. And when goodness increases through his fellow, the world tips towards the side of merit; on a good day he too will enjoy the good.

  8. 8

And behold, King Solomon, peace be upon him, said (Proverbs 10:12): “hatred stirs up strifes, but love covers all sins”. And there are causes due to which hatred arises between a man and his brother [fellow], and all is vain and chasing after wind. There is one who hates [another] because the other person sinned against him physically, financially, or [by diminishing] his honor; therefore regarding this the Torah has already commanded (Leviticus 19:18): “Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge”. And [the sages] explained the reason for it: for that person is constrained in his actions, and is carrying out the will of the Merciful One. For Hashem told him to curse, and his unfortunate lot caused it so that the guilt [of this action] came about through a blameworthy person. And therefore, there is no room to hate a fellow, for he is like an acts in the hand of one chops with it, and “why does a living man complain, a man over his sins?” (Lamentations 3:39). And there is one who hates [another] because of his jealousy, and thinks that because of his fellow, his livelihood has been diminished. And this is nothing other than a lack of faith, as will be discussed in the section “Faith” with the help of Heaven. And there is one who hates [another] since he sees that his fellow is not walking in the good path, and in this the living person should take to heart that he too has shortcomings and blemishes according to his own level. For everything is according to what kind of person he is; “the scales and balances of judgement are in the hand of Hashem” (Proverbs 16:11). And if his fellow’s [evil] inclination overpowered him and he transgressed the will of his Creator, and Hashem extended kindness to him and guided him on the path of truth, surely he ought to give thanks to Hashem and to be careful in the fine details of his commandments to a hair’s breadth according to his knowledge and understanding and according to the help that he received [from Hashem]. And he should not despise or hate his fellow in his heart, for it was not permitted to hate [anyone] except a wicked person, who even after being rebuked several times nevertheless persists in his rebellion and provokes our Father in Heaven and causes sorrow in Heaven. But regarding any other person, it is forbidden to hate him. And the Tanna already spoke very strongly in condemning hatred, to the extent that he said (Avot 2:11): “Hatred of people removes a person from the world”.

  9. 9

And the great fence for removing hatred is through fulfilling the statement of the Tanna who said (Avos 1:6): “And judge every person on the side of righteousness”. And even if your eyes see the evil in the wrongdoer, you should not blame him to the extent that you hate him, since a person’s way is upright in his own eyes, and what was he supposed to do? A person does what is right in his own eyes. We can’t do anything other than pour out our soul before Hashem, that he should correct him by offering him good counsel, and that he will lead guide him in paths of righteousness for the sake of his name. And if one will say, does the Holy One, blessed be He not punish the man that walks in the stubbornness of his heart and what is right in his eyes because he should lear and did not learn, you [should] say to him: that applies to one who is exacting [with others], [then] they [Heaven] are exacting with him as well. But one who does not insist on his own due [i.e. overlooks offenses even when halachically he is allowed not to], all of his transgressions are overlooked (Yoma 23a, Megillah 28a), and with the measure that one uses, so too do they measure him (Megillah 12b, Sotah 8b). Rather one should not hate his fellow if he doesn’t walk in the good path, for if so one should hate himself even more, for who would dare presume in his heart to say that he investigated extensively, and that everything within his power to do he did as was fitting for him to do? Consequently, he is no better than his fellow. And perhaps the other person is better than he is relative to his level, understanding, and ability, as is known from the statement of the sage that honored every man and said “if he is wiser than me, it is fitting for me to honor him due to his wisdom, and if he is duller than me, it is proper to honor him for he is better than me, since his sins are unintentional and mine are willful”. And similarly, along these lines, a person should take to heart various pure thoughts to drive away hatred and awaken love [for others]. Behold, his reward is with him, with the measure of goodness increased.

  10. 10

And behold the truth that our Rabbis of blessed memory said (Bava Metzia 33a): [Between] his lost object and his father’s or teacher’s, his own takes precedence [if he had to choose between which to recover]. But as they already said (Bava Metzia 33a), all who are fastidious in this will in the end come to that. And Rashi explains, if one is always exacting in this, [that is], looking out for his own benefit, he will thereby cast off from himself the yoke of acts of kindness and charity and in the end will need other people. Rather he needs to be willing to lose a small amount so that his friend should not suffer a loss, or that his friend should gain a great deal, or to save his fellow from trouble, and through this Hashem will command blessing upon him.

  11. 11

And the main essence of love of friends is that one should “clothe himself in the body of his fellow” [i.e. put himself in his friends’ place], in such a way that even if he is not particular about his [own] honor and humiliation, nevertheless he should consider [the matter] as though he were like his fellow, according to his character traits. [He should consider how] he would want [others] to honor him, and not say to him anything [involving ] verbal mistreatment, and not infringe upon his honor. So he should do to his fellow. This is the general rule of love of friends, and in this “Hashem gives strength to his people, Hashem blesses his people with peace” (Psalms 29:11).
