  1. 1

Truth - “The lip of truth shall be established forever” (Proverbs 12:19). And [truth] rescues from death, as is known from the Gemara (Sanhedrin 97a:6), in that place, whose name was “Truth”, [where] there were no lies and no man died before his time. And our Rabbis of blessed memory say (Sanhedrin 92a:19), that one who alters his words is regarded as one who worships idols, as it is written (Genesis 27:12) “and I shall seem to him a deceiver”. And Hashem is a G-d of truth, his seal is truth (Shabbat 55a:12), and his Torah is truth, and “the remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth” (Zephaniah 3:13). And there are many ignorant peoples, that have taught their tongue to speak falsehood, and it has become to them as though completely permissible, to the point that there are those who lie in meaningless stories, without any benefit [to themselves]. Concerning them the Scripture says, “woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of falsehood” (Isaiah 5:18). And when [the falsehood] is in order to obtain some benefit, such as [cheating] in measure or weight and the like, then it is not called “falsehood”, but rather “diligence”, “cleverness”, and “effort”. And they say that whoever does not lie nowadays will not be able to earn [a livelihood], but they have answered falsely [i.e. their claim is false]. For our Sages of blessed memory said, in the Midrash on Proverbs (Midrash Tehillim 7:11; see also Yalkut Shimoni, Exodus section 56 and Psalms section 638), when Noah entered the ark, falsehood also came to enter. [Noah] said to him, “go out and find yourself a mate”, for all who came into the ark came male and female. He went and searched, and found destruction. He said to her, “do you wish to marry me?” She said to him, “what will you give me?” He replied to her, “whatever I earn, I will give to you.” And from then onward, whatever Falsehood earns, Destruction takes for herself. And if the evil inclination has made [the matter] appear smooth and attractive in his eyes, and shows him that he profits greatly through falsehood, in the end, without doubt, loss will come upon him, as is written in the Prophets: “One who acquires wealth, but not justly — in the midst of his days he will leave it, and at his end he will be a fool” (Jeremiah 17:11). Or [it will be] wealth preserved for its owner to his detriment, in this world and in the World to Come, “and G-d will withhold no good from those who walk with integrity.” [Psalms 84:12].

  2. 2

And the evils of lying are evil both in the eyes of G-d and man, since a liar is wretched and despised. And the disgrace of this matter is apparent to everyone to the extent that even among the nations of the world there are those who are very careful to speak truthfully and to not speak falsehood. And those who speak falsely in business dealings they conduct with non-Jews cause a desecration of Hashem’s name, for the non-Jews say that it is known that a Jew is a liar, deceiver, cheat, and similar evil things, and they [cast a] blemish [upon] sacred things. And the severity of the prohibition of desecrating Hashem[’s name] is known, and how many [more] prohibitions are entailed by falsehood according to the circumstances, as the discerning person will see. And such is the punishment of a liar, that even if he tells the truth others don’t listen to him.

  3. 3

And truth is the foundation of the edifice. And it is is known what they related in the Midrash (Otzer Hamidrashim page 2299), that a certain person was completely wicked, and through his taking upon himself not to speak falsely, he repented. For if he was going to commit a transgression, he would think: if they ask me, what will I answer? If I tell the truth I will be ashamed and humiliated, and if I lie, I would transgress what I took upon myself. And through this he restrained himself and did not walk in the council of the wicked, and did not stand in the path of sinners. And due to the great virtue of truth, and the great disgrace of falsehood and the evils that result from it, it is proper for a person to exert himself to educate his children in the virtue of truth, and from him they will see to be stringent about speaking the truth and will do as such. And he should watch over them so that deceptive speech should not be found on their lips, and if they do something that is not proper, he should see to it that they admit the truth. And then he should forgive them on that occasion and not strike them, rather he should only admonish them not to do it again. And if they lie, he should strike them severely for their lie. And he should make the sin of falsehood grave in their eyes, so that the children will tremble and be exceedingly careful, until it is their nature to not speak falsehood.

  4. 4

And included in the trait of truth is to make his words true — [to ensure] his “yes” is true and his “no” is true. For besides the prohibition involved [in lying as above], it is a shameful thing to go back on one’s word. And it is said (Bava Metzia 44a), “He who exacted punishment from the generation of the Flood and from the generation of the Dispersion will in the future exact punishment from one who does not stand by his word”. Thus one should think greatly before words leave his mouth if he can uphold them, and if he uttered something, [he should observe] “that which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep” (Deuteronomy 23:24), as if he swore an oath.

  5. 5

And since our Holy Torah is a Torah of truth, how very much must one be careful to utter it in truth, to acknowledge the truth, and to accept the truth from whoever says it, even the smallest of the small. And they have already said — the rabbis, admitting [the truth], this is their praise. And one should not turn to a path of lies, to “burdens of falsehood and deceit” [Lamentations 2:14], rather truth should instruct one’s path. This is the upright path in which all the upright walk, and in this is found favor and good understanding in the eyes of G-d and man. And more is written on this below in the section “confession” and the section “falsehood” and the like, for such is our way — to return [to a subject].
