Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Erev Rosh Hashana, Chapter 23

‹›
  1. 1

    Hear, Israel,

  2. 2

    Adonoy is our God,

  3. 3

    Adonoy is one.

  4. 4

Our King! We come before You

  5. 5

with the power of Your Unity,1I.e. with the merit that we express the Unity of the Name of God.

  6. 6

    for we have nothing [else]

  7. 7

    with which to greet You

  8. 8

but with [our acceptance of] Your Kingdom

  9. 9

    and [recognition] of Your deeds.

  10. 10

    Therefore, with the whole heart

  11. 11

    we will express Your Unity.

  12. 12

We will express Your Unity together,

  13. 13

    old and young.

  14. 14

Please erase our writs of guilt,

  15. 15

and inscribe in the Book of Life

  16. 16

    our remembrance,

  17. 17

    and decree now

  18. 18

that our years be for good.2‘Years for good,’ i.e. that we have a good life.

  19. 19

    Hear, Israel,

  20. 20

    Adonoy is our God,

  21. 21

    Adonoy is one.

  22. 22

The chosen [nation] that You redeemed

  23. 23

    with trial, tests and miracles

  24. 24

in Your Name they find protection

  25. 25

and the Sh’ma they read with blessings.3‘Sh’ma — blessings,’ i.e. twice a day they read the Sh’ma with the appropriate blessings before and after.

  26. 26

    These [nations] with chariots

  27. 27

    and others with horses.

  28. 28

    But, we, [however]

  29. 29

trust in the Name of Adonoy, our God.4‘These nations — God,’ i.e. whereas, other nations depend on the might of their weapons we depend solely on the help of God.

  30. 30

We carry [the Name of God]

  31. 31

    with fear, trepidation, and trembling.

  32. 32

    Strengthen them against the nations

  33. 33

    and support them,

  34. 34

as promised in Your holy word5I.e. the Holy Scriptures.:

  35. 35

    “They will kneel and fall

  36. 36

and we will rise and be strengthened.

  37. 37

    Hear, Israel,

  38. 38

    Adonoy is our God,

  39. 39

    Adonoy is one.

  40. 40

The Inside Services have come to an end6I.e. the Service of Yom Kippur in the Holy of Holies can no longer be performed.

  41. 41

[so, too, the Service of] the goats of atonement.7I.e. the service of the “two goats” performed only on Yom Kippur.

  42. 42

And the priest is no more

  43. 43

to placate the anger [of God],

  44. 44

    and we have been left

  45. 45

like the heart of a woman

  46. 46

who is in fear of her labor pains,

  47. 47

we depend on that which was said:

  48. 48

    “Adonoy will answer you

  49. 49

    on the day of distress.”

  50. 50

    When affliction comes to Jacob,

  51. 51

    this one [the righteous] says:

  52. 52

“I am for Adonoy” without deceit8I.e. they say this with all sincerity.

  53. 53

and the other one [the unrighteous]

  54. 54

proclaim that they are of Jacob,9I.e. despite their wrongdoing, their allegiance remains with the Jewish nation.

  55. 55

and they all depend on the promise

  56. 56

that the God of Jacob [will redeem them].

  57. 57

    Hear, Israel,

  58. 58

    Adonoy is our God,

  59. 59

    Adonoy is one.

  60. 60

We are called by Your name10I.e. we are called the people of God.

  61. 61

[You Who are] abundant in deeds.

  62. 62

Turn towards us to our cries

  63. 63

    and accept our prayers.

  64. 64

And remove from us our evil deeds

  65. 65

    You the Holy One

  66. 66

Who sits [awaiting] praises [of Israel].

  67. 67

    You Who awaits praises!

  68. 68

Awaken those who slumber11I.e. those whom the suffering of the exile has desensitized.

  69. 69

    in darkness amongst the nations.

  70. 70

Redeem them and cleanse them of their stains,

  71. 71

    Almighty, King

  72. 72

Who sits on the throne of compassion.

  73. 73

Do unto us as You promised,

  74. 74

    “And yet for all that,

  75. 75

when they are in the land of their enemies,

  76. 76

    I will not reject them

  77. 77

and I will not abhor them, to destroy them,

  78. 78

    לְהָפֵר בְּרִיתִי אִתָּם

    to annul My covenant with them;

  79. 79

for I am Adonoy, their God.”

  80. 80

Be accessible to us when we seek You,

  81. 81

    as it is written:

  82. 82

    “And from there

  83. 83

you will seek Adonoy, your God,

  84. 84

    וּמָצָֽאתָ

    and you will find Him;

  85. 85

    if you search after Him

  86. 86

    with all your heart

  87. 87

    and with all your soul.”

  88. 88

    Open our hearts

  89. 89

    to love Your Name,

  90. 90

as it is written in Your Torah:

  91. 91

“And Adonoy, your God will open your heart,

  92. 92

and the heart of your descendants,

  93. 93

    to love Adonoy, your God,

  94. 94

    with all your heart,

  95. 95

    and with all your soul,

  96. 96

    that you may live.”

  97. 97

    Sprinkle clean water upon us,

  98. 98

and cleanse us, as it is written:

  99. 99

“And I will sprinkle clean water upon you,

  100. 100

    וּטְהַרְתֶּם

    and you will be clean;

  101. 101

    from all your defilements,

  102. 102

    and from all your idols,

  103. 103

    I will cleanse you.”

  104. 104

    Sweep aside our transgressions

  105. 105

as a thick cloud and as a mist,

  106. 106

    as You have promised:

  107. 107

“I have swept away like a thick cloud

  108. 108

    your transgressions,

  109. 109

    וְכֶעָנָן חַטֹּאתֶֽיךָ

    and like a mist, your sins;

  110. 110

return to Me, for I have redeemed You.”

  111. 111

Blot out our transgressions for Your sake,

  112. 112

    as You promised:

  113. 113

    “I, I [alone] am He

  114. 114

    Who blots out your transgressions

  115. 115

    לְמַעֲנִי

    for My own sake;

  116. 116

and your sins, I will not recall.”

  117. 117

Make our sins as white as snow or wool,

  118. 118

    as it is written:

  119. 119

“Come now, let us reason together,

  120. 120

    says Adonoy,

  121. 121

though your sins be as scarlet,

  122. 122

    כַּשֶּֽׁלֶג יַלְבִּֽינוּ

    they shall be as white as snow;

  123. 123

though they be red as crimson,

  124. 124

they shall become [white] as wool.”

  125. 125

Have compassion on us and do not destroy us,

  126. 126

    as it is written:

  127. 127

“For an Almighty of mercy is Adonoy,

  128. 128

    אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ

    your God;

  129. 129

He will not abandon you or destroy you,

  130. 130

    and He will not forget

  131. 131

    the covenant of your fathers

  132. 132

    which He swore to them.”

  133. 133

Gather our dispersed ones, as it is written:

  134. 134

    “If your dispersed

  135. 135

are in the farthermost part of heaven,

  136. 136

from there Adonoy, your God will gather you,

  137. 137

and from there He will take you.”

  138. 138

    Bring back our captivity

  139. 139

    and have compassion on us,

  140. 140

    as it is written:

  141. 141

“And Adonoy, your God will return

  142. 142

    אֶת שְׁבוּתְךָ וְרִחֲמֶֽךָ

    your captivity and have compassion on you;

  143. 143

and He will again gather you

  144. 144

    from [among] all the peoples,

  145. 145

where Adonoy, your God has scattered you.”

  146. 146

Bring us to Your holy mountain,

  147. 147

and make us joyful in Your House of Prayer,

  148. 148

    as it is written:

  149. 149

“And I will bring them to My holy mountain,

  150. 150

    וְשִׂמַּחְתִּים בְּבֵית תְּפִלָּתִי

    and make them joyful in My House of Prayer;

  151. 151

    their burnt-offerings and sacrifices

  152. 152

will be accepted with favor on My Altar,

  153. 153

    for My House,

  154. 154

will be called a House of Prayer

  155. 155

    for all peoples.”
