  1. 1

  2. 2

    To You, my Creator

  3. 3

I have spread my hands [in prayer],

  4. 4

I have abandoned arrogance and haughtiness.

  5. 5

    Truly, a broken spirit,

  6. 6

I [have brought before You as a] sacrifice,

  7. 7

and in Your loving-kindness, I trust.

  8. 8

    I trust in You

  9. 9

    and not upon refined weaponry,

  10. 10

even when I was threatened with death

  11. 11

[along with] scholars and their students.

  12. 12

    Search out [for redemption]

  13. 13

the speechless dove and nestling,1“Speechless dove”—i.e. the nation of Israel.

  14. 14

and let him return the robbery2And—robbery, i.e. let the gentiles return the land that they robbed from us.

  15. 15

    that he robbed.

  16. 16

    We have sinned, our Rock,

  17. 17

    forgive us, our Creator.

  18. 18

He [the gentile nations] robbed and destroyed

  19. 19

the exalted righteous [of our nation]

  20. 20

    and his wise elders,

  21. 21

and destroyed his House3‘House’—i.e. the Temple.

  22. 22

and desecrated the Holy4Holy, i.e. the Temple. and its holies

  23. 23

and slashed the Curtain5I.e. the curtain separating the Holy of Holies from the rest of the Temple.

  24. 24

and slaughtered his prophets and holy men,

  25. 25

that was a generation that seeked Him.

  26. 26

The blood of those that seeked Him

  27. 27

shall be a ransom and redemption

  28. 28

    before Your honorable Throne

  29. 29

[that instills] fear [in all creation].

  30. 30

    [We are] attached to You

  31. 31

    as linked couplets and twins,

  32. 32

    because for Your sake

  33. 33

    we are constantly killed.

  34. 34

    We have sinned, our Rock,

  35. 35

    forgive us, our Creator.

  36. 36

    On this day

  37. 37

    how many tens of thousands

  38. 38

fell [by the sword] from Your nation,

  39. 39

    and gave their lives

  40. 40

for the Unity of Your Name.

  41. 41

For their sake bring forth into the light

  42. 42

    their judgments and sentence

  43. 43

    from Your heights,

  44. 44

    and hear the prayers

  45. 45

of Your servants and Your nation.

  46. 46

And Your nation they loot and rob

  47. 47

    and their riches they plundered

  48. 48

and they rejoice in the fear6‘In the fear’ i.e. the fear of the Jewish Nation.

  49. 49

and in the breach7‘In the break’ i.e. the breach of the Jewish Nation. they revel.

  50. 50

‘And who has given Jacob to loot’

  51. 51

    loudly they proclaim,

  52. 52

“Is it not Adonoy that did this!”

  53. 53

    We have sinned, our Rock,

  54. 54

    forgive us, our Creator

  55. 55

[To this we respond] ‘Our sins caused this,

  56. 56

and [caused our] pursuer to smite us.

  57. 57

We have veered from the path

  58. 58

and like a rebellious counsel we have kicked.

  59. 59

    We suffered His anger

  60. 60

according to the measure [that we deserve],

  61. 61

and according to our evil actions

  62. 62

    we have suffered

  63. 63

to Adonoy our God we have sinned.

  64. 64

    We have sinned

  65. 65

and we are still [immersed] in great guilt.

  66. 66

    To ridicule and mockery

  67. 67

we have been placed in exile.

  68. 68

[The prophecy of Scripture has befallen us:

  69. 69

    “Behold!

  70. 70

Adonoy has made you wander wanderings.”

  71. 71

    We have sinned, our Rock,

  72. 72

    forgive us, our Creator.

  73. 73

    The wanderings and sorrows

  74. 74

    became stronger and intensified.

  75. 75

The wolves [who attack their prey at] dusk8‘The wolves — dusk,’ i.e. the nations of the world.

  76. 76

    devoured and stunned us.

  77. 77

    They tore us to pieces

  78. 78

and left not even a bone till morning.

  79. 79

They are ruthless and do not take pity.

  80. 80

May pity come from the Heavens!

  81. 81

    To do miracles [for us]

  82. 82

and let Him save His people

  83. 83

from the hand of the strong and violent.

  84. 84

May His beloved dwelling9I.e. the Temple.

  85. 85

    expand its length and breadth

  86. 86

as a mast and as a banner10May the Temple be so visible and prominent! at the mountaintop.

  87. 87

    We have sinned, our Rock,

  88. 88

    forgive us, our Creator.

  89. 89

    As a [lonely] flagpole, [remained]

  90. 90

    the remnant of His inheritance,

  91. 91

Masters, besides Him, lorded over us.

  92. 92

Now, let it be told to Jacob11I.e. Israel.

  93. 93

    whom He forgives:

  94. 94

    “God has chosen him,

  95. 95

Israel to be His chosen nation.”

  96. 96

    To His chosen nation

  97. 97

let there not be pain and destruction.

  98. 98

    As in days of yore

  99. 99

let my ruins12I.e. Jerusalem. be rebuilt.

  100. 100

To my king let Him give strength

  101. 101

    and let him be exalted,

  102. 102

    [God] Who humbles and exalts.

  103. 103

    We have sinned, our Rock,

  104. 104

    forgive us, our Creator.

  105. 105

    Exalted One!

  106. 106

Show me [vengeance] in my enemies,13בשוררי—lit. those who see to my destruction.

  107. 107

    His vengeance

  108. 108

and the vengeance of my chosen place14‘Chosen place,’ i.e. the Temple..

  109. 109

Transfer the pain of my shame to my enemies

  110. 110

    for I carried

  111. 111

the shame of [the wrongdoing] of my youth.

  112. 112

[God responds:] I remember his youth

  113. 113

the love of betrothal.15‘I remember — betrothal’ i.e. I remember the kindnesses that I did for you when you first became My nation.

  114. 114

[So, too] in her old age

  115. 115

    act kindly towards her.

  116. 116

Please! Let my prayer be established

  117. 117

as a burnt-offering.16‘Let — offering,’ i.e. let my prayer be considered as a sacrifice brought at the time of the Temple.

  118. 118

God of Jacob listen to my prayer forever.

  119. 119

    We have sinned, our Rock,

  120. 120

    forgive us, our Creator.

  121. 121

You have always been a support to those who put their hope in You.

  122. 122

For Your sake do [for them],

  123. 123

    if not for their sake.

  124. 124

[Then] their enemies will be embarrassed

  125. 125

    and disgraced through their prayers

  126. 126

[for they will pray] to Adonoy

  127. 127

and You will not answer them.

  128. 128

Answer [the prayers] of the House of Israel,

  129. 129

    who have declared Your oneness,

  130. 130

even when You put their cities to rubble

  131. 131

    they desired You.

  132. 132

Therefore, [even when they had to hide]

  133. 133

in the cracks [of the earth]

  134. 134

    they honored You.

  135. 135

Adonoy, in their anguish, they remembered You.

  136. 136

    We have sinned, our Rock,

  137. 137

    forgive us, our Creator.

  138. 138

    They remembered You,

  139. 139

You to whom lips turn to call [in prayer].

  140. 140

    Rescue them from punishment

  141. 141

    and from severe edicts.

  142. 142

    Please! Turn towards their song

  143. 143

    and their beseeching.

  144. 144

You are their strength in time of anguish.

  145. 145

    Anguish and distress

  146. 146

    remove from me, my Creator,

  147. 147

    and the gates of tears

  148. 148

shall not be shut for me.

  149. 149

    צְבוּרוֹת בְּנֹאדְךָ

    For they are gathered in Your vessel;

  150. 150

are they not counted by You, my Redeemer!

  151. 151

I have cried. Hear my voice!

  152. 152

    We have sinned, our Rock,

  153. 153

    forgive us, our Creator.

  154. 154

I will raise my voice in plea

  155. 155

[that You save me] from the oppression

  156. 156

    [of My] tumultuous enemy.

  157. 157

    I was overwhelmed

  158. 158

by the severe anger of my oppressor.

  159. 159

The mother, together with her children,

  160. 160

    was torn to pieces.

  161. 161

[The mother] was torn to pieces

  162. 162

before her eyes are her children slaughtered.

  163. 163

Her face was put to shame

  164. 164

    her cheek plucked.

  165. 165

    The barons

  166. 166

from the Chamber of Hewn Stone17‘Barons — Stone’ i.e. the Sanhedrin who met in the temple in the Chamber of Hewn Stone to pass judgment.

  167. 167

    have become few,

  168. 168

where the tribes [of Israel] ascended.

  169. 169

    Return Your tribes

  170. 170

to Your glorious dwelling-place18I.e. the Temple.

  171. 171

so that the remnant [of Israel] be crowned.19I.e. that the Kingdom of the House of David return.

  172. 172

Let it be heard by the fugitive of Judah

  173. 173

    that has remained

  174. 174

so that she remain a crown of glory.

  175. 175

    We have sinned, our Rock,

  176. 176

    forgive us, our Creator.

  177. 177

Your glorious [people] who trust [in You],

  178. 178

this nation that You have acquired.

  179. 179

You have not found them contemptuous,

  180. 180

when they have called You, You responded.

  181. 181

[Even when] a single poor person calls,

  182. 182

    You have prepared Your reply:

  183. 183

    “I will hear their prayer

  184. 184

    and their plea

  185. 185

which [you] pleaded [in their behalf].”

  186. 186

    You have taken pity

  187. 187

    on Your annihilated children

  188. 188

and who were exiled from their father’s table.

  189. 189

    You said: “Compassion
