‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Rabbi Elyah ben Shemayah.

  2. 2

Master, when You judge man who is a worm,

  3. 3

    remember in Your anger

  4. 4

to be gracious and compassionate with us,

  5. 5

when You sit in judgment to rebuke the guilty,

  6. 6

clear and justify the erring and simple.

  7. 7

Grant kindness and goodness to the guilty,

  8. 8

do not press judgment to its limits.

  9. 9

[When] those who are poor in good deeds

  10. 10

and destitute in conduct, call upon You,

  11. 11

    לָמוֹ הִמָּצֵא:

    let them find You.

  12. 12

We stand before You with great guilt,

  13. 13

    צִפְצוּף מַעַן בֹּשְׁנוּ לְפוֹצֵץ:

    we are ashamed to mouth a reply [excuse];

  14. 14

can man be justified before God?

  15. 15

In the Presence of His Maker,

  16. 16

can man be found pure [innocent]?

  17. 17

    Maliciousness lurks within him,

  18. 18

    deceit is hidden within him,

  19. 19

he is full of iniquity and great transgression,

  20. 20

    account and reckoning

  21. 21

before the Supreme King of Kings,

  22. 22

he will have to give at his end.

  23. 23

His sins are engraven by his own hand,

  24. 24

his wickedness will testify against him,

  25. 25

the beams of his house will reveal

  26. 26

    and declare his deeds,

  27. 27

    the stone from the wall

  28. 28

will scream and call out.1See Mesechet Taanis 11a; Chagigah 16a.

  29. 29

The judged will hide his face in shame,

  30. 30

he will be considered as naught

  31. 31

    בְּעָמְדוֹ לְפָנֶיךָ:

    when he stands before Your Presence;

  32. 32

    we beseech You,

  33. 33

be pleased with the work of our hands,

  34. 34

    behold our broken hearts,

  35. 35

    and preserve us from destruction.

  36. 36

Let Your servants find favor this day,

  37. 37

    declare them guiltless,

  38. 38

    קִרְבָתְךָ חֲפוֹץ כְבָרִאשׁוֹנָה:

    they desire Your nearness as of old;

  39. 39

    like snow and wool

  40. 40

whiten the sins of the rose [Israel],

  41. 41

    save them from all evil

  42. 42

    in this year.

  43. 43

    Almighty! King!

  44. 44

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  45. 45

    governs with kindness

  46. 46

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  47. 47

He removes their sins one by one,

  48. 48

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  49. 49

    and pardon to transgressors.

  50. 50

    Acting righteously

  51. 51

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  52. 52

    not according to their wickedness

  53. 53

    does He repay them.

  54. 54

    Almighty!

  55. 55

    You instructed us to recite

  56. 56

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  57. 57

    remember unto us this day

  58. 58

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  59. 59

    as You made them known

  60. 60

to the humble Moses of old,

  61. 61

    as it is written,

  62. 62

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  63. 63

    and stood with him there,

  64. 64

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  65. 65

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  66. 66

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  67. 67

    and proclaimed:

  68. 68

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  69. 69

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  70. 70

    Slow to Anger,

  71. 71

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  72. 72

    Keeper of kindness

  73. 73

    for thousands of generations,

  74. 74

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  75. 75

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  76. 76

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  77. 77

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  78. 78

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  79. 79

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  80. 80

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  81. 81

    “For You, my Master,

  82. 82

    are good and forgiving,

  83. 83

    and abounding in kindness

  84. 84

to all who call upon You.”

  85. 85

Adonoy, hear our voice in the morning,

  86. 86

morning, we pray to You and hope.

  87. 87

Draw near to our soul and redeem it,

  88. 88

redeem us for Your Name’s sake.

  89. 89

    Show us Your kindness, Adonoy,

  90. 90

    and grant us Your deliverance.

  91. 91

As a father has compassion on his children

  92. 92

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  93. 93

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  94. 94

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  95. 95

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  96. 96

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  97. 97

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  98. 98

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  99. 99

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  100. 100

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  101. 101

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  102. 102

    in accordance with the greatness

  103. 103

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  104. 104

and as You forgave this people

  105. 105

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  106. 106

    And there it is said:

  107. 107

    “And Adonoy said,

  108. 108

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  109. 109

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  110. 110

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  111. 111

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  112. 112

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  113. 113

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  114. 114

but because of Your great mercy.

  115. 115

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  116. 116

My Master, listen and take action,

  117. 117

    do not delay!

  118. 118

    For Your sake, my God,

  119. 119

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  120. 120

over Your city and over Your people.
