This prayer was composed by Rabbi Shlomo ben Yehudah Habavli.

אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ

Our God and God of our fathers!

אֶזְעַק אֶל־אֱלֹהִים קוֹלִי.

I cry out to God with my voice,

בֹּקֶר אֶעֱרָךְ־לְךָ

in the morning, I address my prayer to You,

בְּעַד־קְהָלִי.

on behalf of my congregation;

יְהֹוָה צוּרִי וְגֹאֲלִי:

Adonoy, my Rock and my Redeemer!

גַּשְׁנוּ בְתַחֲנוּן וּבִתְפִלָּה.

We approach You with supplication and prayer,

דְלָתֶיךָ שָׁקַדְנוּ

we keep watch at Your door,

רַב עֲלִילָה.

O Mighty One in wondrous deeds,

הָסֵר מֵעָלֵינוּ נֶגַע וּמַחֲלָה:

remove from us, plague and sickness.

הַמְצֵא־לָנוּ סְלִיחוֹת.

Grant us pardon,

וְהַעֲבֵר רָעָה

and remove evil

מִנְּפָשׁוֹת הָאֲנוּחוֹת.

from grieving souls,

אֵל אֱלֹהַי הָרוּחוֹת:

Almighty God Who knows man’s thoughts;

זָעַקְתִּי־לְךָ בְּעִנּוּי וּתְלָאָה.

I cry to You in affliction and weariness,

חַיָּתִי פְּדֵה נָא מִשַּׁחַת וּשְׁאוֹלָה.

redeem my soul from destruction and the pit,

קָרְבָה אֶל־נַפְשִׁי גְאָלָהּ:

draw near to my soul and redeem it.

טוֹב מִבֶּטֶן גֹּחִי.

Beneficent One, Who drew me from the womb,

יוֹצְרִי וְשִׂבְרִי וּמִבְטָחִי.

my Creator, my hope and my trust,

בְּיָדְךָ אַפְקִיד רוּחִי:

in Your hand I entrust my spirit;

כְּבֹשׁ־כַּעַסְךָ מִידִידֶיךָ.

withhold Your anger from Your beloved ones,

לִרְאוֹת־שַׁחַת אַל־תִּתֵּן חֲסִידֶיךָ.

cause not Your devoted ones to see the pit,

עֲנֵנִי יְהֹוָה כִּי־טוֹב חַסְדֶּךָ:

answer me Adonoy, for Your kindness is good.

מַכָּה בְּלִי־תְרוּפָה. נֶצַח

With an incurable, eternal blow,

לְחוֹרְפֶיךָ תִּשְׁלַח בְּהַקְצָפָה.

strike with anger those who blaspheme You,

וּבְעַמְּךָ לֹא לְמַגֵּפָה:

but do not plague Your people;

סֻגַּפְנוּ בְּיוֹם זֶה.

we afflict ourselves this day,

עֱנוּתֵנוּ לֹא־תְשַׁקֵּץ וְלֹא־תִבְזֶה.

do not abhor nor despise our cry,

סְלַח־נָא לַעֲוֹן הָעָם הַזֶּה:

pardon the iniquity of this people.

פָּשַׁעְנוּ וּמָעָלְנוּ.

We have transgressed and dealt treacherously,

צוּר לְךָ חָבוֹל חָבָלְנוּ.

O Rock, we have been corrupt towards You.

לָכֵן כִּלִּינוּ בְאַפְּךָ,

Therefore, we are consumed by Your anger

וּבַחֲמָתְךָ נִבְהָלְנוּ:

and we are terrified by Your rage;

קָדוֹשׁ, רִיב אַל־תִּמְתַּח.

Holy One! do not extend contention,

רְאֵה כִּי־כַפַּי לְךָ אֶשְׁטַח.

behold, my hands are stretched out to You,

יוֹם אִירָא

on the day when I am afraid,

אֲנִי אֵלֶיךָ אֶבְטָח:

I will put my trust in You.

שֶׁפֶךְ שִֹיחַ עַמֶּךָ.

Your people pour out their prayer,

תָּחֹן וְתַעַן שְׁלֵמֶיךָ.

be merciful and answer Your faithful ones,

אַל־תִּנְאַץ לְמַעַן שְׁמֶךָ:

do not abhor us for Your Name’s sake,

שְׁעֵה שַׁוְעַת אֲנוּנִים.

turn to the cry of the suffering,

לְקוֹרְאֶיךָ מִדֹּחַק

to those who call You out of distress,

הַסְכֵּת מִמְּעוֹנִים.

hear them from the high heavens,

שׁוֹמֵעַ אֶל אֶבְיוֹנִים:

You Who listens to the needy.

נְדִיבֵי עַם

[Israel] the noblest among people,

מַטַּע נַעֲמָנִים.

the pleasant offspring,

הַחוֹסֶיךָ קֹוֶיךָ

they trust in You, they hope to You,

טְהוֹרֶיךָ נִמְנִים.

they are counted among Your pure ones,

מַהֵר תְּרַחֲמֵם,

quickly have mercy on them

כְּרַחֵם אָב עַל־בָּנִים:

as a father has mercy on his children.

אֵל מֶֽלֶךְ.

Almighty! King!

יוֹשֵׁב עַל כִּסֵּא רַחֲמִים.

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

מִתְנַהֵג בַּחֲסִידוּת.

governs with kindness

מוֹחֵל עֲו‍ֹנוֹת עַמּוֹ.

forgives the iniquities of His people.

מַעֲבִיר רִאשׁוֹן רִאשׁוֹן.

He removes their sins one by one,

מַרְבֶּה מְחִילָה לְחַטָּאִים

increasing forgiveness to sinners,

וּסְלִיחָה לְפוֹשְׁעִים.

and pardon to transgressors.

עוֹשֶׂה צְדָקוֹת

Acting righteously

עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

with all who are of flesh and spirit;

לֹא כְרָעָתָם

not according to their wickedness

תִּגְמוֹל:

does He repay them.

אֵל

Almighty!

הוֹרֵיתָ לָנוּ לוֹמַר

You instructed us to recite

שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

the thirteen Divine attributes;

וּזְכָר לָֽנוּ הַיּוֹם

remember unto us this day

בְּרִית שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

כְּמוֹ שֶׁהוֹדַֽעְתָּ

as You made them known

לֶעָנָו מִקֶּֽדֶם.

to the humble Moses of old,

כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב

as it is written,

וַיֵּרֶד יְהֹוָה בֶּֽעָנָן

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

וַיִּתְיַצֵּב עִמּוֹ שָׁם

and stood with him there,

וַיִּקְרָא בְשֵׁם יְהֹוָה:

and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

קהל וחזן:

Congregation and Chazzan:

וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

וַיִּקְרָא:

and proclaimed:

יְהֹוָה יְהֹוָה

Adonoy, Adonoy,

אֵל רַחוּם וְחַנּוּן

Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

אֶֽרֶךְ אַפַּֽיִם

Slow to Anger,

וְרַב חֶֽסֶד וֶֽאֱמֶת:

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

נֹצֵר חֶֽסֶד

Keeper of kindness

לָאֲלָפִים

for thousands of generations,

נֹשֵׂא עָו‍ֹן וָפֶֽשַׁע

Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

וְחַטָּאָה

and sin;

וְנַקֵּה:

and Acquitter of those who repent.

וְסָלַחְתָּ לַעֲו‍ֹנֵֽנוּ וּלְחַטָּאתֵֽנוּ

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

וּנְחַלְתָּֽנוּ:

and take us for Your inheritance.”

סְלַח לָֽנוּ אָבִֽינוּ כִּי חָטָֽאנוּ.

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

מְחַל לָֽנוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ כִּי פָשָֽׁעְנוּ:

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

כִּי אַתָּה אֲדֹנָי

“For You, my Master,

טוֹב וְסַלָּח

are good and forgiving,

וְרַב חֶֽסֶד

and abounding in kindness

לְכָל קֹרְאֶֽיךָ:

to all who call upon You.”

אַל־יָשֹׁב דַּךְ נִכְלָם

Let the oppressed not be put to shame,

עָנִי וְאֶבְיוֹן יְהַלְלוּ שְׁמֶךָ׃

let the poor and needy praise Your Name.

אַל־תִּרְחַק מִמֶּנּוּ

Be not far [removed] from us,

כִּי־צָרָה קְרוֹבָה

for distress is near,

כִּי־אֵין עוֹזֵר׃

and there is no one to help.

כִּי אֶסְלַח לַעֲוֺנָם

For I will pardon their iniquity,

וּלְחַטָּאתָם לֹא אֶזְכָּר־עוֹד׃

and their sin I will no longer mention.

וְסָלַחְתָּ לְעַמְּךָ

Pardon Your people

אֲשֶׁר חָטְאוּ־לָךְ

that have sinned before You,

וּלְכָל־פִּשְׁעֵיהֶם

and all their transgressions

אֲשֶׁר פָּשְׁעוּ־בָךְ,

that they have transgressed unto You,

וּנְתַתָּם לְרַחֲמִים

and grant mercy

לִפְנֵי שֹׁבֵיהֶם׃

before their captors.

וְאַתָּה אֱלוֹהַּ סְלִיחוֹת

And You, God that pardons,

חַנּוּן וְרַחוּם אֶרֶךְ־אַפַּיִם

Gracious, Merciful, Slow to anger,

וְרַב־חֶסֶד

and Abounding in kindness—

וְלֹא עֲזַבְתָּם׃

do not forsake them.

כְּרַחֵם אָב עַל בָּנִים

As a father has compassion on his children

כֵּן תְּרַחֵם יְהֹוָה עָלֵֽינוּ:

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

עַל עַמְּךָ בִרְכָתֶֽךָ סֶּֽלָה:

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת עִמָּֽנוּ

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

מִשְׂגָּב לָֽנוּ, אֱלֹהֵי יַעֲקֹב סֶֽלָה:

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת,

Adonoy of Hosts!

אַשְׁרֵי אָדָם בֹּֽטֵֽחַ בָּךְ:

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

Adonoy, deliver us;

הַמֶּֽלֶךְ יַעֲנֵֽנוּ בְיוֹם קָרְאֵנוּ:

the King will answer us on the day we call.

סְלַח נָא לַעֲו‍ֹן הָעָם הַזֶּה,

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

כְּגֹֽדֶל

in accordance with the greatness

חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

of Your lovingkindness;

וְכַאֲשֶׁר נָשָֽׂאתָה לָעָם הַזֶּה.

and as You forgave this people

מִמִּצְרַֽיִם וְעַד הֵֽנָּה.

from when it left Egypt until now.”

וְשָׁם נֶאֱמַר:

And there it is said:

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹוָה

“And Adonoy said,

סָלַֽחְתִּי כִּדְבָרֶֽךָ:

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

הַטֵּה אֱלֹהַי אָזְנְךָ וּשְׁמָע,

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

פְּקַח עֵינֶֽיךָ וּרְאֵה שֹׁמְמֹתֵֽינוּ,

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

and the city which is called by Your Name;

כִּי לֹא עַל צִדְקֹתֵֽינוּ,

for it is not on account of our righteousness

אֲנַֽחְנוּ מַפִּילִים תַּחֲנוּנֵֽינוּ לְפָנֶֽיךָ,

that we let fall our supplication before You,

כִּי עַל רַחֲמֶֽיךָ הָרַבִּים:

but because of Your great mercy.

אֲדֹנָי שְׁמָֽעָה, אֲדֹנָי סְלָֽחָה,

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

אֲדֹנָי הַקְשִֽׁיבָה וַעֲשֵׂה,

My Master, listen and take action,

אַל תְּאַחַר.

do not delay!

לְמַעַנְךָ אֱלֹהַי,

For Your sake, my God,

כִּי שִׁמְךָ נִקְרָא

because Your Name is proclaimed

עַל עִירְךָ וְעַל עַמֶּֽךָ:

over Your city and over Your people.
