Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Erev Rosh Hashana, Chapter 14

‹›
  1. 1

Master, when You call on man

  3. 3

    each morning [for judgment]

  4. 4

do not press justice to its limits.

  5. 5

If You combine body and soul [in judgment]

  6. 6

    they would be thrust down

  7. 7

    and be unable to rise.

  8. 8

Can man be innocent in judgement?

  9. 9

Is he possessed of deeds to justify him?

  10. 10

His birth stream is from a fetid drop,

  11. 11

his enemy is hidden within him

  12. 12

from the time of his birth.

  13. 13

Lurking within him as a snare to his feet,

  14. 14

    he entices him daily,

  15. 15

    לְשַׁחַת לְהַפִּילוֹ:

    to make him fall into the abyss [of sin];

  16. 16

there is no power or might in the body

  17. 17

to stand firm and resist him.

  18. 18

From the day he attains perception,

  19. 19

he puts his life in his hand

  20. 20

    to gain his bread,

  21. 21

    all his days are filled

  22. 22

    כַּעַס וּמַכְאוֹבוֹת,

    with vexation and grief;

  23. 23

until he returns to his dust

  24. 24

    he is not at rest.

  25. 25

Regard O Master his sorrowful spirit,

  26. 26

    look at his broken heart,

  27. 27

You are near to these who are afar,

  28. 28

You desire the repentance of the wicked.

  29. 29

Mighty One! let Yourself be found

  30. 30

    by those who seek You,

  31. 31

    say: “Here I am,”

  32. 32

    to those who petition You

  33. 33

let the tiding: “I have pardoned”—

  34. 34

be told to those who call in Your Name,

  35. 35

    make righteous in judgment

  36. 36

the people who proclaim Your Unity.

  37. 37

    Muzzle the foul one [Satan]

  38. 38

that he may not condemn us,

  39. 39

rebuke the accuser that he not accuse us,

  40. 40

    הָקֵם לָנוּ מֵלִיץ־יֹשֶׁר.

    stand up for us an upright advocate;

  41. 41

    “I have found atonement,”

  42. 42

    תַּשְׁמִיעַ לְשׁוֹבָבִים:

    let the penitent hear.

  43. 43

We have cast our burden upon You

  44. 44

we beseech You to sustain us,

  45. 45

    be pleased with our prayer

  46. 46

    our request and desire

  47. 47

    fulfill with compassion.

  48. 48

In You we place our trust,

  49. 49

    רַחֲמֶיךָ מְהֵרָה יְקַדְּמוּנוּ:

    let Your mercy come swiftly toward us;

  50. 50

    Strong and Mighty One,

  51. 51

we have not forgotten Your Name,

  52. 52

we beseech You, never forget us.

  53. 53

    Almighty! King!

  54. 54

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  55. 55

    governs with kindness

  56. 56

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  57. 57

He removes their sins one by one,

  58. 58

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  59. 59

    and pardon to transgressors.

  60. 60

    Acting righteously

  61. 61

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  62. 62

    not according to their wickedness

  63. 63

    does He repay them.

  64. 64

    Almighty!

  65. 65

    You instructed us to recite

  66. 66

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  67. 67

    remember unto us this day

  68. 68

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  69. 69

    as You made them known

  70. 70

to the humble Moses of old,

  71. 71

    as it is written,

  72. 72

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  73. 73

    and stood with him there,

  74. 74

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  75. 75

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  76. 76

    and proclaimed:

  77. 77

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  78. 78

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  79. 79

    Slow to Anger,

  80. 80

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  81. 81

    Keeper of kindness

  82. 82

    for thousands of generations,

  83. 83

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  84. 84

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  85. 85

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  86. 86

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  87. 87

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  88. 88

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  89. 89

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  90. 90

    “For You, my Master,

  91. 91

    are good and forgiving,

  92. 92

    and abounding in kindness

  93. 93

to all who call upon You.”

  94. 94

Do not enter into judgment with us

  95. 95

for no living soul will be justified before You.

  96. 96

    For they have devoured Jacob,

  97. 97

and his habitation they have laid waste,

  98. 98

the tents [armies] of Edom, Ishmael,

  99. 99

    Moab and Gris.

  100. 100

For our souls are filled with misfortune

  101. 101

and our lives have reached the abyss.

  102. 102

And You are our King from of old,

  103. 103

You do wonders in the midst of the earth.

  104. 104

Bring forth our righteousness the daylight

  105. 105

and our judgment as at noon-time.

  106. 106

As a father has compassion on his children

  107. 107

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  108. 108

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  109. 109

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  110. 110

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  111. 111

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  112. 112

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  113. 113

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  114. 114

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  115. 115

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  116. 116

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  117. 117

    in accordance with the greatness

  118. 118

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  119. 119

and as You forgave this people

  120. 120

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  121. 121

    And there it is said:

  122. 122

    “And Adonoy said,

  123. 123

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  124. 124

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  125. 125

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  126. 126

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  127. 127

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  128. 128

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  129. 129

but because of Your great mercy.

  130. 130

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  131. 131

My Master, listen and take action,

  132. 132

    do not delay!

  133. 133

    For Your sake, my God,

  134. 134

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  135. 135

over Your city and over Your people.
