‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Rabbi Yoel ben Yitzchak HaLevi.

  2. 2

God! Let Him choose for Himself

  3. 3

the scattered sheep1Israel, which is scattered among nations as sheep among the wolves.

  4. 4

    and let Him deliver her.

  5. 5

To the sound of her cries

  6. 6

let Him listen and be attentive,

  7. 7

    lest she be destroyed

  8. 8

by the sword and arrow.2Of the nations.

  9. 9

    Oh, why does He allow

  10. 10

the evil one to blaspheme God.

  11. 11

God! I tremble at the uproar,

  12. 12

    the tumultous clamor3Of our enemies.

  13. 13

urging me to refute Your Oneness.

  14. 14

    They oppress Your inheritance,

  15. 15

why, [God, do you permit them]

  16. 16

to remove me from my belief in You.

  17. 17

so that the vile one can say in his heart

  18. 18

    that there is no God.

  19. 19

    God! do not remain silent

  20. 20

    over our spilt blood,

  21. 21

    over our arrayed limbs

  22. 22

    that have filled [many] chambers.

  23. 23

Why do You ignore without hearing

  24. 24

that he has villified the armies of God.

  25. 25

God! be our Protector and we shall sing

  26. 26

at the demise of the evil ones

  27. 27

who say: “Do not partake of Your Torah,

  28. 28

    and what is the benefit

  29. 29

    בְּחַרְתֶּם בְּאֵל הַכָּבוֹד.

    that you chose the honored God;

  30. 30

it is in vain to worship God.”

  31. 31

    God! The nations have come

  32. 32

to tire and exhaust Your inheritance,

  33. 33

    with poured graven images

  34. 34

they have made their sign as a sign.

  35. 35

See that they have cut off the sheep

  36. 36

    from their habitat,

  37. 37

    and they have said:

  38. 38

    “We shall inherit for ourselves

  39. 39

    the dwelling of God.”

  40. 40

    God! Inquire into this

  41. 41

that they4The nations. have decided to slaughter

  42. 42

    [our] infants and sucklings

  43. 43

who have volunteered for the sword,

  44. 44

    and appointed themselves

  45. 45

    to be brought as sacrifices

  46. 46

    to the altar of God.

  47. 47

    God of hosts! please return

  48. 48

and avenge me from the hands of Esau

  49. 49

    for he has enticed me

  50. 50

    saying: what [hope] is there,

  51. 51

for You have given up on me

  52. 52

and that I have been forgotten by God.

  53. 53

    They5Israel. rejected any new god

  54. 54

    for vain is its worship.

  55. 55

    They cleaved to their Creator

  56. 56

    וְיָרְקוּ לְעֻמַּת־מַחְבַּרְתּוֹ.

    and spat at their books of philosophy;

  57. 57

    and each of them gave

  58. 58

his spirit and body6To sanctify God’s holy Name.

  59. 59

    and none is left

  60. 60

for they were7Lit. “he was.” taken by God.

  61. 61

    “God is holy,” they pronounced,

  62. 62

and confessed [the sins] of their souls,

  63. 63

    without concealing their sins.

  64. 64

To their mothers they cried out:

  65. 65

“Hurry and bind us,8So that we will not resist.

  66. 66

for through us God will be honored.”

  67. 67

Let God fight for him9I.e. the nation of Israel.

  68. 68

just as He gave over His people

  69. 69

    to be cut down

  70. 70

    like heads of grain stalks.

  71. 71

May she be10I.e. the soul of His nation. bound

  72. 72

to those who sit in a circle11I.e. the Sanhedrin who customarily sit in a semi-circle.

  73. 73

[in the garden of Eden] of God.

  74. 74

God! To those who are pure of heart

  75. 75

my eyes flow [with tears like] water

  76. 76

when I remember that with their feet

  77. 77

they dragged them along the roads.

  78. 78

Hear the voice of those who blaspheme,

  79. 79

    דּוֹבְרֵי נְבָלוֹת.

    those who speak repulsive words;

  80. 80

enough of their sounds, O God.

  81. 81

God! Accept me! And be a strength

  82. 82

to those who come under Your wing

  83. 83

to find protection from the beasts.12לבְאָיִם—lit. lions.

  84. 84

They have run for Your help

  85. 85

to be saved from conspiracy13Of the nations.

  86. 86

    by being together with God.

  87. 87

God! May they fall in their conspiracies,

  88. 88

    these planners [of evil].

  89. 89

    May their memory be blotted

  90. 90

and lay Your anger upon them.

  91. 91

    May [they] very speedily

  92. 92

[receive] their just rewards upon their heads

  93. 93

and let all nations be erased

  94. 94

those [nations] who have forgotten God.

  95. 95

    Living God!

  96. 96

May we please fall into Your hands,

  97. 97

but into the hands of the evil

  98. 98

    do not deliver Your servants.

  99. 99

Seek the vengeance of the persecuted

  100. 100

the children of Your beloved ones.14I.e. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

  101. 101

How dear is Your kindness, O God!

  102. 102

    God! You have abandoned us

  103. 103

    and we are at fault.

  104. 104

    Therefore, my heart trembles

  105. 105

    and I sit stunned.

  106. 106

    Hurry to help me

  107. 107

from those who rise up [against me].

  108. 108

    Save me from bloodiness, God!

  109. 109

God! Let the voice of my speech

  110. 110

and the voice of [Your] flock

  111. 111

    come before You

  112. 112

from the ends of the world.

  113. 113

    Return us unto You

  114. 114

    And let my prayer be

  116. 116

at a time of acceptance to You, Adonoy.

  117. 117

    God.

  118. 118

    Almighty! King!

  119. 119

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  120. 120

  129. 129

    Almighty!

  130. 130

    You instructed us to recite

  131. 131

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  132. 132

    remember unto us this day

  133. 133

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  134. 134

    as You made them known

  135. 135

to the humble Moses of old,

  136. 136

    as it is written,

  137. 137

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  138. 138

    and stood with him there,

  139. 139

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  140. 140

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  141. 141

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  142. 142

    and proclaimed:

  143. 143

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  150. 150

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  151. 151

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  152. 152

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  153. 153

and take us for Your inheritance.”

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  155. 155

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  156. 156

    “For You, my Master,

  157. 157

    are good and forgiving,

  158. 158

    Let Your ear hear

  165. 165

    and Your eyes see

  166. 166

the prayers of Your people, Israel.

  167. 167

Pardon Your people who sinned to You,

  168. 168

    and all their transgressions

  169. 169

    which they transgressed unto You.

  170. 170

    Grant truth to Jacob,

as You have sworn to our fathers

  173. 173

    from the days of old.

  174. 174

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  175. 175

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  180. 180

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  187. 187

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  188. 188

    in accordance with the greatness

  190. 190

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  191. 191

and as You forgave this people

  192. 192

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  193. 193

    And there it is said:

  194. 194

    “And Adonoy said,

  195. 195

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  196. 196

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  197. 197

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  198. 198

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  199. 199

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  200. 200

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  201. 201

but because of Your great mercy.

  202. 202

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  203. 203

My Master, listen and take action,

  204. 204

    do not delay!

  205. 205

    For Your sake, my God,

  206. 206

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  207. 207

over Your city and over Your people.
