Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Erev Rosh Hashana, Chapter 7

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Rabbi Solomon Ibn Gabirol (1021–1056).

  2. 2

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

We beseech You, arouse Your old love,

  4. 4

    with which You loved [Israel],

  5. 5

    the uncountable congregation,

  6. 6

with every term of love, brotherhood

  7. 7

    וְרֵעוּת מְכֻנָּה.

    and friendship, You designated them;

  8. 8

for the sake of my brethren and companions,

  9. 9

let me speak, I beseech You.

  10. 10

When You set foot on Mount [Sinai]

  11. 11

to delight us with Your ancient treasure,6The Torah which existed even before Creation.

  12. 12

You likened us to a kingdom of priests

  13. 13

    וְגוֹי־קָדוֹשׁ, וּבְנִי.

    and a holy nation, [calling us] “My son”;

  14. 14

    and she [Israel] then said:

  15. 15

“He is my brother, my King, and my Master.”

  16. 16

You caused them [Israel] to inherit

  17. 17

a delightful heritage, the sweet portion;7The Land of Israel.

  18. 18

Your glory [Shechinah] You caused to frequent

  19. 19

    בְּלוֹיוֹת צַעֲצֻעִים.

    between the images of the Cherubim;

  20. 20

and now they [Israel] have been driven away

  21. 21

    by strangers and evil doers.

  22. 22

In a land that is not theirs,

  23. 23

    Your brethren now sojourn.

  24. 24

    Remember, do not forget,

  25. 25

be not silent and do not rest, Almighty,

  26. 26

for Edom and Ishmael wanted to cut me off,

  27. 27

    Gracious One, You know

  28. 28

    of all these afflictions,

  29. 29

    so speak Your brethren, Israel.

  30. 30

Plunderers beset me and emptied me,

  31. 31

to exchange the clean for the unclean,8To renounce Judaism.

  32. 32

    oppressors tried to force me,

  33. 33

    behold, every day

  34. 34

    עֲבָדֶיךָ מֻכִּים וְלוֹקִים.

    how Your servants are beaten and whipped;

  35. 35

the voice of Your brother’s blood cries out.

  36. 36

    כָּרוּ־לִי שִׁיחוֹת לְמוֹקֵשׁ.

    They have dug a pit to trap me;

  37. 37

    my soul faints and yearns

  38. 38

    to seek Your help,

  39. 39

knock at my door and be my deliverance,

  40. 40

[and say] “I seek my brothers.”

  41. 41

From the Day of Rosh Hashana9See Metsudah T’hillim page 165 note 4.

  42. 42

when You sit on Your glorious throne

  43. 43

and look down to examine simultaneously

  44. 44

the hearts of those who rebel against You

  45. 45

and the hearts of those who serve You,

  46. 46

    exact with force

  47. 47

    כָּל בַּעַל מַשַּׁאת בּוֹגְדֶיךָ.

    the debt from all who rebel against You;

  48. 48

but whatever Your brother owes You,

  49. 49

    תַּשְׁמֵט יָדֶךָ:

    let Your hand release.

  50. 50

When the Books [of Life and Death] are read

  51. 51

for the creatures of Your world,

  52. 52

decreeing life or the opposite [of life]

  53. 53

    לְשֹׁעַ וָמָךְ.

    to the rich and the poor;

  54. 54

Most High grant favor and kindness

  55. 55

    in Your Sanctuary [of judgement].

  56. 56

Be surety for Your servant for good,

  57. 57

so that Your brother may live with You.

  58. 58

Turn to me and be gracious to me,

  59. 59

    and set me on high,

  60. 60

cause those who provoke You to perish

  61. 61

    בְּעֹנִי וְרִשְׁיוֹן.

    in wretchedness and in poverty;

  62. 62

but when You apportion the sustenance

  63. 63

    giving each his yearly provision,

  64. 64

    do not shut Your hand

  65. 65

    from Your needy brother.

  66. 66

    I rise before dawn

  67. 67

and cry to You my Creator.

  68. 68

    Forward Your kindness

  69. 69

and forgive my transgression and treachery.

  70. 70

Let Your mercy be extended to me

  71. 71

as one who comforts me in my mourning.

  72. 72

O that You were like a brother to me.

  73. 73

Consider the supplication of Your poor ones

  74. 74

    and [hear their] cry,

  75. 75

    שָֹבְעָה בְרָעוֹת נַפְשָׁם וְחַיָּתָם.

    satiated with troubles are their souls and spirit;

  76. 76

cast into the depths of the sea

  77. 77

    כָּל־חַטֹּאתָם.

    all their sins;

  78. 78

    we beseech You, forgive now,

  79. 79

    the transgression of Your brothers,

  80. 80

    and their sins.

  81. 81

I rejoice at the word of Your promise,

  82. 82

You drew our hearts [to You]

  83. 83

    עַל־יְדֵי־צִירִים שְׁלוּחֶיךָ.

    through Your messengers [the prophets];

  84. 84

when will You reveal Your mighty arm?

  85. 85

    Go now and see

  86. 86

to the peace [welfare] of Your brothers.

  87. 87

You were always the hope of Israel

  88. 88

and the sword of their pride,10Israel took pride that God fought their battles.

  89. 89

living God, lift up their stature now,

  90. 90

    וְאַמֵּץ זְרֹעָם וְתִשְׁכֹּן בֵּינוֹתָם.

    strengthen their arm and dwell among them;

  91. 91

and Your brothers, remember them for peace

  92. 92

    and their families too.

  93. 93

    Almighty! King!

  94. 94

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  95. 95

    governs with kindness

  96. 96

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  97. 97

He removes their sins one by one,

  98. 98

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  99. 99

    and pardon to transgressors.

  100. 100

    Acting righteously

  101. 101

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  102. 102

    not according to their wickedness

  103. 103

    does He repay them.

  104. 104

    Almighty!

  105. 105

    You instructed us to recite

  106. 106

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  107. 107

    remember unto us this day

  108. 108

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  109. 109

    as You made them known

  110. 110

to the humble Moses of old,

  111. 111

    as it is written,

  112. 112

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  113. 113

    and stood with him there,

  114. 114

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  115. 115

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  116. 116

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  117. 117

    and proclaimed:

  118. 118

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  119. 119

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  120. 120

    Slow to Anger,

  121. 121

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  122. 122

    Keeper of kindness

  123. 123

    for thousands of generations,

  124. 124

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  125. 125

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  126. 126

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  127. 127

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  128. 128

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  129. 129

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  130. 130

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  131. 131

    “For You, my Master,

  132. 132

    are good and forgiving,

  133. 133

    and abounding in kindness

  134. 134

to all who call upon You.”

  135. 135

Do not enter into judgement with us

  136. 136

for no living soul will be justified before You.

  137. 137

Give ear Adonoy to our prayer,

  138. 138

listen to the voice of our supplication.

  139. 139

What can we say before You Adonoy our God?

  140. 140

    What can we speak?

  141. 141

And how can we justify ourselves?

  142. 142

Our God, we are ashamed and embarrassed

  143. 143

to lift up our faces to You, our God,

  144. 144

    for great is our desertion,

  145. 145

    to You we have sinned.

  146. 146

We have sinned together with our fathers,

  147. 147

we have been malicious and have done evil.

  148. 148

The sins of our youth, and our transgressions,

  149. 149

    do not recall.

  150. 150

According to Your kindness, remember us,

  151. 151

for the sake of Your goodness, Adonoy.

  152. 152

As a father has compassion on his children

  153. 153

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  154. 154

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  155. 155

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  156. 156

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  157. 157

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  158. 158

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  159. 159

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  160. 160

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  161. 161

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  162. 162

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  163. 163

    in accordance with the greatness

  164. 164

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  165. 165

and as You forgave this people

  166. 166

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  167. 167

    And there it is said:

  168. 168

    “And Adonoy said,

  169. 169

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  170. 170

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  171. 171

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  172. 172

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  173. 173

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  174. 174

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  175. 175

but because of Your great mercy.

  176. 176

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  177. 177

My Master, listen and take action,

  178. 178

    do not delay!

  179. 179
