Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Erev Rosh Hashana, Chapter 5

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Rabbi Joseph ben Isaac of Orleans (1150).

  2. 2

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

Master! when You appoint a time

  4. 4

to judge us rightly with Your might,

  5. 5

    I stand trembling

  6. 6

to see Your Presence, to exalt You,

  7. 7

for I do not depend on my deeds,

  8. 8

    but only on Your mercy.

  9. 9

Adonoy! Do it for the sake of Your Name.

  10. 10

The faithful ones have been cut off—

  11. 11

the mighty, with power to intercede,

  12. 12

[gone] also are those who made fences

  13. 13

and stood in the breach4Defending the integrity of Yiddishkeit.

  14. 14

    who forcefully brought their petition

  15. 15

before Him Who dwells in the high heavens.

  16. 16

The pious man has perished from the earth.

  17. 17

    Behold, I am unworthy,

  18. 18

and what can I answer with my mouth?

  19. 19

    Behold, I am young [insignificant]

  20. 20

    בְּאֵין־מִפְעֲלוֹת בְּכַפִּי.

    without good deeds in my hand;

  21. 21

    how, then, can I hope

  22. 22

when I am so full of fault?

  23. 23

Let the words of my mouth be acceptable.

  24. 24

I tremble and I am afraid

  25. 25

    מֵחַוּוֹת דֵּעִי.

    to express my wishes;

  26. 26

    I fear my wickedness

  27. 27

    וּמֶרֶד־רִשְׁעִי.

    and my rebellious disobedience;

  28. 28

Gracious One, have mercy on me

  29. 29

as I confess my sins and forsake them.

  30. 30

Hear the voice of my supplication,

  31. 31

when I cry out to You.

  32. 32

    I have erred

  33. 33

but behold I repent and confess

  34. 34

    עֲשֹוֹת רְצוֹנֶךָ.

    [in order] to do Your will;

  35. 35

You Who are pure of eyes,

  36. 36

    חָשְׁבֵנִי כְּשָׁלֵם לְפָנֶיךָ.

    consider me as perfect in Your Presence;

  37. 37

    God, deal with me

  38. 38

more leniently than to the letter of Your law.

  39. 39

    And let me know You

  40. 40

[so] that I might find favor in Your eyes.

  41. 41

    May Your power be magnified

  42. 42

and be adorned with my prayer,

  43. 43

as with the prayer of a [wise] old man,

  44. 44

    who is fluent in prayer

  45. 45

    and of blameless character.

  46. 46

My heart is crushed, humbled and grieved.

  47. 47

Look from the heavens and behold.

  48. 48

    Almighty! King!

  49. 49

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  50. 50

    governs with kindness

  51. 51

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  52. 52

He removes their sins one by one,

  53. 53

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  54. 54

    and pardon to transgressors.

  55. 55

    Acting righteously

  56. 56

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  57. 57

    not according to their wickedness

  58. 58

    does He repay them.

  59. 59

    Almighty!

  60. 60

    You instructed us to recite

  61. 61

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  62. 62

    remember unto us this day

  63. 63

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  64. 64

    as You made them known

  65. 65

to the humble Moses of old,

  66. 66

    as it is written,

  67. 67

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  68. 68

    and stood with him there,

  69. 69

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  70. 70

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  71. 71

    וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו

    And Adonoy passed before him [Moses];

  72. 72

    and proclaimed:

  73. 73

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  74. 74

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  75. 75

    Slow to Anger,

  76. 76

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  77. 77

    Keeper of kindness

  78. 78

    for thousands of generations,

  79. 79

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  80. 80

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  81. 81

and Acquitter of those who repent.”

  82. 82

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  83. 83

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  84. 84

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  85. 85

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  86. 86

    “For You, my Master,

  87. 87

    are good and forgiving,

  88. 88

    and abounding in kindness

  89. 89

to all who call upon You.”
