Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Erev Rosh Hashana, Chapter 4

‹›
  1. 1

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

How can I open my mouth,

  4. 4

and how can I lift my eyes,

  5. 5

when in me there are no good deeds

  6. 6

and in my hand there is no merit?

  7. 7

    I shout, I am like a drunkard,

  8. 8

and like one overcome with wine.

  9. 9

    I am like a warrior

  10. 10

    without weapons:

  11. 11

    The humble heart trembles,

  12. 12

for gone is [the righteous one]

  13. 13

    הַהוּקַם סַרְסוּר.

    appointed to intercede on our behalf;

  14. 14

and who is left to open his mouth—

  15. 15

the fool, and one who lacks perception.

  16. 16

His transgression is concealed in him,

  17. 17

and his iniquity is imprisoned within him,

  18. 18

he is a sinner and full of rebelliousness,

  19. 19

a captive of the despicable [evil inclination].

  20. 20

Filled with distraction is this humiliated heart

  21. 21

of him who comes to entreat You,

  22. 22

the straight path he has distorted,

  23. 23

    [and] he despises admonition,

  24. 24

[for] he has become twisted and crooked.

  25. 25

His knee is weak because of his guilt,

  26. 26

    וְצַחֲנָתוֹ לוֹ לְמוֹקֵשׁ.

    and the filth of his sin is his obstacle;

  27. 27

in his heart he thinks of iniquity,

  28. 28

and his deeds cause him to stumble.

  29. 29

    Rebuttals and excuses to offer—

  30. 30

    what can I find?

  31. 31

I have become repulsive and polluted

  32. 32

for I am filled with disgrace and derision.

  33. 33

The abundance of my tears has not endured,

  34. 34

    כְּאַכְזָב מוֹצָא.

    its source has been interrupted;

  35. 35

    [even] my assembly [for prayer]

  36. 36

is filled with iniquity and deceit,

  37. 37

and my fast days filled with strife.

  38. 38

Erase our transgression, forgive our iniquity,

  39. 39

    and atone our guilt.

  40. 40

I cry out from an aching heart,

  41. 41

that is disgraced, shamed and humiliated:

  42. 42

“Quiet Your wrath, calm Your rage,

  43. 43

    וְכַעַס הָפֵר.

    and annul Your anger;

  44. 44

be pleased with [our emmissary who seeks3A reference to the Chazzan.]

  45. 45

to make us favored and loved [in Your eyes],

  46. 46

and confound [Satan] who digs pits for us.”

  47. 47

    Remember the tribes of Israel!

  48. 48

    Prepare yourselves with pure hearts,

  49. 49

with whole hearts, uphold [the Mitzvos],

  50. 50

    and bring forth your supplication,

  51. 51

do homage in purity [of heart].

  52. 52

    When Adonoy makes Himself accessible,

  53. 53

    seek Him with added might,

  54. 54

He will not shame or detest

  55. 55

the cry of the humble and crushed [heart].

  56. 56

A day of deliverance and a time of favor

  57. 57

    אֶמְצָא לְפָנֶיךָ.

    may I find in Your Presence;

  58. 58

    fit, worthy and faultless,

  59. 59

may I be considered in Your eyes.

  60. 60

    When I stand in prayer

  61. 61

to plead for mercy on Your children,

  62. 62

let us hear, “I have bestowed favor on you,”

  63. 63

    “I have pardoned you”—

  64. 64

may this be told us from Your Dwelling.

  65. 65

Quickly, seek the Presence of the Almighty,

  66. 66

excise the hardness of your hearts,

  67. 67

remove the obstacle [the evil inclination],

  68. 68

clear the way and straighten the crooked,

  69. 69

    abandon iniquity and confess,

  70. 70

and do not continue to harden [your hearts].

  71. 71

He who knows of his sin,

  72. 72

let him repent and show regret,

  73. 73

let him accept words of admonition,

  74. 74

and let him plead [for forgiveness].

  75. 75

Listen O Master to my supplication,

  76. 76

    give ear to my prayer,

  77. 77

    be pleased with my cry,

  78. 78

    be appeased and conciliated

  79. 79

    וְקַבֵּל שַׁוְעָתִי.

    and accept my prayer;

  80. 80

I call You out of distress,

  81. 81

be near to me and come deliver me,

  82. 82

quickly, help me, my Master, my deliverer.

  83. 83

    Almighty! King!

  84. 84

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  85. 85

    governs with kindness

  86. 86

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  87. 87

He removes their sins one by one,

  88. 88

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  89. 89

    and pardon to transgressors.

  90. 90

    Acting righteously

  91. 91

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  92. 92

    not according to their wickedness

  93. 93

    does He repay them.

  94. 94

    Almighty!

  95. 95

    You instructed us to recite

  96. 96

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  97. 97

    remember unto us this day

  98. 98

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  99. 99

    as You made them known

  100. 100

to the humble Moses of old,

  101. 101

    as it is written,

  102. 102

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  103. 103

    and stood with him there,

  104. 104

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  105. 105

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  106. 106

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  107. 107

    and proclaimed:

  108. 108

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  109. 109

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  110. 110

    Slow to Anger,

  111. 111

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  112. 112

    Keeper of kindness

  113. 113

    for thousands of generations,

  114. 114

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  115. 115

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  116. 116

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  117. 117

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  118. 118

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  119. 119

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  120. 120

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  121. 121

    “For You, my Master,

  122. 122

    are good and forgiving,

  123. 123

    and abounding in kindness

  124. 124

to all who call upon You.”

  125. 125

Do not enter into judgement with us

  126. 126

for no living soul will be justified before You.

  127. 127

When You appoint a time, O God

  128. 128

    to judge us with uprightness.

  129. 129

Hear the voice of our supplications

  130. 130

when we cry out to You.

  131. 131

    When we lift our hands

  132. 132

toward the Holy of Holies of Your Sanctuary.

  133. 133

    Save our souls from death

  134. 134

    and sustain us from hunger.

  135. 135

And You Adonoy, are our shield,

  136. 136

our glory and the uplifter of our heads.

  137. 137

As a father has compassion on his children

  138. 138

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  139. 139

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  140. 140

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  141. 141

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  142. 142

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  143. 143

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  144. 144

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  145. 145

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  146. 146

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  147. 147

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  148. 148

    in accordance with the greatness

  149. 149

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  150. 150

and as You forgave this people

  151. 151

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  152. 152

    And there it is said:

  153. 153

    “And Adonoy said,

  154. 154

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  155. 155

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  156. 156

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  157. 157

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  158. 158

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  159. 159

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  160. 160

but because of Your great mercy.

  161. 161

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  162. 162

My Master, listen and take action,

  163. 163

    do not delay!

  164. 164

    For Your sake, my God,

  165. 165

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  166. 166

over Your city and over Your people.
