Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Third Day, Chapter 4

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Shlomo ben Yehuda, HaBavli

  2. 2

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

In the day of dread, I call upon You.

  4. 4

Let me not be oppressed by the insolent—

  5. 5

those who forsake the precious Torah.

  6. 6

    גְּמוּל לְהָשִׁיב לָהֶם,

    Render to them their just deserts;

  7. 7

sit [in judgement] to scrutinize [their deeds].

  8. 8

May the sentence of the wicked and corrupt

  9. 9

    be carried out in full.

  10. 10

Those who intend to make us forget

  11. 11

    Your holy and revered Name

  12. 12

and make us familiar with idolatrous names—

  13. 13

    נִקְלֶה וְנֶעֱבָד.

    that are despicable and vulgar;

  14. 14

    through their methods

  15. 15

the best of our people have been destroyed.

  16. 16

    Spare the remnant

  17. 17

from being crushed as [olives] in an oilpress.

  18. 18

As they tear beasts of prey,

  19. 19

so they learned to devour man, as it is said:11Ezekiel 19:3.

  20. 20

    they cast lots for us

  21. 21

as if we were ownerless property

  22. 22

    in the wilderness.

  23. 23

    We were almost utterly consumed,

  24. 24

and nothing would have been left of us,

  25. 25

were it not for Your mercy, O Master,

  26. 26

    Who rules with kindness

  27. 27

Who dares murmur at Your ways,

  28. 28

    to argue against them?

  29. 29

who dares gird himself to dispute You?

  30. 30

We have turned away [from Your mitzvos]

  31. 31

and have been scattered like the wind.

  32. 32

    וְנִשְׁמְטָה חֶרֶב הַיּוֹנָה.

    The enemy’s bloody sword was drawn;

  33. 33

    but with You is justice

  34. 34

    and Your hand is uppermost.

  35. 35

Let the tyrant not say: “I have prevailed,”

  36. 36

nor let Judah’s enemies exult at my fall:

  37. 37

    Proclaim—

  38. 38

for those who were sold for naught—

  39. 39

    the year of release.

  40. 40

May the wicked seeking to extend their rule

  41. 41

be turned back and cut down.

  42. 42

Your bill of sale12You acquired Israel as Your exclusive possession. preceded theirs

  43. 43

and yet the creditors13Israel’s enemies. demand payment.

  44. 44

To postpone Your lien [is the intent]

  45. 45

    of the many harsh rulers.

  46. 46

The border marks of Your boundary,14The Mitzvos of the Torah are boundary marks dividing Israel from all other nations.

  47. 47

    they seek to uproot.

  48. 48

The grain [Israel] which You sanctified,

  49. 49

    has been devoured—

  50. 50

both grain ears and chaff.15Both good and bad ones.

  51. 51

Let judgement for their evil come on them

  52. 52

    and reveal their guilt.

  53. 53

    According to their misdeeds

  54. 54

be harsh and bring devastation upon them.

  55. 55

For the portion of their cups,

  56. 56

    פַּחֵי מִפַּח הַגְשִׁימֵם.

    rain upon them fiery coals;

  57. 57

    הֲשִׁיבֵם שִׁבְעָתַיִם,

    return to them sevenfold.

  58. 58

Avenge Your covenant and destroy them.

  59. 59

To the city of Your beautiful Palace, lead us.

  60. 60

Make a path through the sea

  61. 61

for the redeemed congregation to pass.

  62. 62

    In You is our hope,

  63. 63

    and You, our Almighty Creator,

  64. 64

comfort us; may Your kindliness be upon us.

  65. 65

    Almighty! King!

  66. 66

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  67. 67

    governs with kindness

  68. 68

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  69. 69

He removes their sins one by one,

  70. 70

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  71. 71

    and pardon to transgressors.

  72. 72

    Acting righteously

  73. 73

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  74. 74

    not according to their wickedness

  75. 75

    does He repay them.

  76. 76

    Almighty!

  77. 77

    You instructed us to recite

  78. 78

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  79. 79

    remember unto us this day

  80. 80

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  81. 81

    as You made them known

  82. 82

to the humble Moses of old,

  83. 83

    as it is written,

  84. 84

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  85. 85

    and stood with him there,

  86. 86

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  87. 87

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  88. 88

    וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו

    And Adonoy passed before him [Moses];

  89. 89

    and proclaimed:

  90. 90

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  91. 91

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  92. 92

    Slow to Anger,

  93. 93

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  94. 94

    Keeper of kindness

  95. 95

    for thousands of generations,

  96. 96

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  97. 97

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  98. 98

and Acquitter of those who repent.”

  99. 99

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  100. 100

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  101. 101

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  102. 102

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  103. 103

    “For You, my Master,

  104. 104

    are good and forgiving,

  105. 105

    and abounding in kindness

  106. 106

to all who call upon You.”
