Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Third Day, Chapter 3

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Shlomo ben Yehuda, HaBavli

  2. 2

Our God, and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

Your ways are not like those of man,1Who cannot always fulfill his will.

  4. 4

where, then, is Your vengeance2But since You can, why don’t You take revenge from our enemies.

  5. 5

    and Your enduring counsel?

  6. 6

The daughter [Israel] whom You chose

  7. 7

to serve You in Your cherished House—

  8. 8

is now dominated by [strange] masters

  9. 9

and she is unable to cleave unto You.

  10. 10

    She groans [saying]:

  11. 11

“I am betrothed to my beloved—

  12. 12

    but the abhorred oppressor—

  13. 13

how he has trampled upon me.”

  14. 14

The sentence of death, she accepts on herself,

  15. 15

though she is exiled [from her land]

  16. 16

    and coerced by the nations.

  17. 17

The mother3This refers to the Congregation of Israel. is sent away—not divorced,

  18. 18

the son, like a lost orphan—is sent off.

  19. 19

She, who was likened to a closed-in garden,4Israel, who was protected by its Divine faith, has now been abandoned.

  20. 20

has become abandoned like wild grass,

  21. 21

and the foundation that was sealed

  22. 22

    is now trodden and polluted.

  23. 23

Formerly Your wrath lasted but a moment,

  24. 24

but now the reverse is true.

  25. 25

The [priests who wore the] holy crowns,

  26. 26

are now cast into the streets.

  27. 27

She, who was beloved of God, was beautiful

  28. 28

as “Keren Hafuch” [Job’s daughter, Job 42:14]

  29. 29

    is now forsaken, and regarded

  30. 30

as one [a harlot] with painted eyes.5God considers our love to be insincere.

  31. 31

She, who was of pleasing appearance,

  32. 32

has become blackened by hard labor,

  33. 33

    her sore festers without healing.

  34. 34

    יוֹם נָקָם נִסְתַּם דֶרֶךְ:

    The day of vengeance—its path is yet closed;

  35. 35

    the day of redemption—

  36. 36

the window is yet sealed.6The time of redemption is concealed from our view.

  37. 37

Our endurance is weakened by the burden;7Of exile.

  38. 38

crippled and lame are the survivors of death.

  39. 39

Without rest, they stray and wander,

  40. 40

they labor and strive, while others reap.

  41. 41

The horn [pride of Israel] was planted

  42. 42

in the rich, fertile land [of Israel].

  43. 43

    Why has it become trampled

  44. 44

    like thistles for the furnace?

  45. 45

The Guardian above, who never sleeps,

  46. 46

why does He let His plant be trampled

  47. 47

by the bulls of Bashan [Israel’s enemies].

  48. 48

What profits the vine when it is cut down?

  49. 49

What benefit is it to the spreading vine

  50. 50

    when it is uprooted?

  51. 51

She [Israel], who is engraved on God’s palm,8See Isaiah 49:16.

  52. 52

    and upon His T’filin,

  53. 53

why has God’s love for her been withdrawn?

  54. 54

    The task of the nations

  55. 55

requires minimal effort,9They are required to observe only the seven Noachide laws.

  56. 56

but the payment of their wages increases.

  57. 57

She [Israel] yearns for Your attention,

  58. 58

but her waiting time is prolonged.

  59. 59

    Each occurrence of trouble

  60. 60

    is followed immediately by another.

  61. 61

The holy first offerings of the grain heaps10Israel is referred to as God’s first fruits.

  62. 62

are scattered like chaff to the ends of the earth,

  63. 63

driven by the wind like leaves of the forest.

  64. 64

They flee in panic, as pursued by the sword.

  65. 65

Those ninety eight curses [described in the Torah, Deut. 28]

  66. 66

and those not described are fulfilled in us.

  67. 67

    Have mercy, gather us

  68. 68

    from these [four] corners.

  69. 69

Then will they say among the nations:

  70. 70

“Adonoy has done great things for them.”

  71. 71

    Almighty! King!

  72. 72

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  73. 73

    governs with kindness

  74. 74

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  75. 75

He removes their sins one by one,

  76. 76

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  77. 77

    and pardon to transgressors.

  78. 78

    Acting righteously

  79. 79

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  80. 80

    not according to their wickedness

  81. 81

    does He repay them.

  82. 82

    Almighty!

  83. 83

    You instructed us to recite

  84. 84

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  85. 85

    remember unto us this day

  86. 86

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  87. 87

    as You made them known

  88. 88

to the humble Moses of old,

  89. 89

    as it is written,

  90. 90

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  91. 91

    and stood with him there,

  92. 92

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  93. 93

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  94. 94

    וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו

    And Adonoy passed before him [Moses];

  95. 95

    and proclaimed:

  96. 96

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  97. 97

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  98. 98

    Slow to Anger,

  99. 99

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  100. 100

    Keeper of kindness

  101. 101

    for thousands of generations,

  102. 102

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  103. 103

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  104. 104

and Acquitter of those who repent.”

  105. 105

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  106. 106

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  107. 107

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  108. 108

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  109. 109

    “For You, my Master,

  110. 110

    are good and forgiving,

  111. 111

    and abounding in kindness

  112. 112

to all who call upon You.”

  113. 113

Let us lift our hearts with our hands

  114. 114

    to the Almighty in heaven.

  115. 115

    Our help comes from Adonoy,

  116. 116

    Maker of heaven and earth.

  117. 117

    אַל יִתֵּן לַמּוֹט רַגְלֵנוּ

    He will not let our feet slip;

  118. 118

    He will not slumber—our Guardian.

  119. 119

    Behold, He does not slumber,

  120. 120

nor does He sleep, the Guardian of Israel.

  121. 121

    Deliver, Adonoy, Your people,

  122. 122

    the remnant of Israel.

  123. 123

As a father has compassion on his children

  124. 124

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  125. 125

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  126. 126

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  127. 127

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  128. 128

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  129. 129

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  130. 130

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  131. 131

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  132. 132

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  133. 133

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  134. 134

    in accordance with the greatness

  135. 135

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  136. 136

and as You forgave this people

  137. 137

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  138. 138

    And there it is said:

  139. 139

    “And Adonoy said,

  140. 140

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  141. 141

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  142. 142

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  143. 143

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  144. 144

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  145. 145

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  146. 146

but because of Your great mercy.

  147. 147

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  148. 148

My Master, listen and take action,

  149. 149

    do not delay!

  150. 150

    For Your sake, my God,

  151. 151

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  152. 152

over Your city and over Your people.
