‹›
  1. 1

  2. 2

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

Heed supplication and listen to prayer,

  4. 4

    cancel anger and diminish fury.

  5. 5

The bitter-hearted who pray to You

  6. 6

will find help in Your great Name.

  7. 7

Regard the cry of the groaning1The groaning of the nation of Israel.

  8. 8

    עֱנוּתָם חֲזֵה.

    behold their suffering;

  9. 9

do not disdain their bent stature.

  10. 10

    דְּרֹשׁ עֶלְבּוֹנָם מִצַּר בּוֹזֶה.

    Charge the insolent enemy for shaming them;

  11. 11

trample them and let their blood spurt.

  12. 12

You have existed and still do,

  13. 13

and will exist in all Your glory.

  14. 14

    You said

  15. 15

the seed of Your loyal ones would exist,

  16. 16

    yet they are being wasted

  17. 17

by the power of Your fury.

  18. 18

They angered You with their sins

  19. 19

and were evicted from their desire,

  20. 20

    זֹרוּ בָּאֲפָסִים וְלֹא נָחוּ.

    they were scattered all over without rest;

  21. 21

their spirit wounded, bent to the earth,

  22. 22

    plowed upon

  23. 23

    and deeply furrowed.

  24. 24

Sunk in mud with no rescuer,

  25. 25

their predators at peace all around,

  26. 26

    יוֹם יוֹם לוֹחֲמָם מְנַצֶּה.

    daily their enemy fights;

  27. 27

they spread their hands2To God in prayer. to get out of trouble.

  28. 28

    Their lives are wasted

  29. 29

    בְּיָגוֹן וַאֲנָחָה.

    with agony and groans;

  30. 30

the weak are many and joy is gone.

  31. 31

    לְיֶשַׁע חוֹכִים וְהִנֵּה צְוָחָה.

    They hope for salvation and end up crying;

  32. 32

    they’re wearied by upstarts

  33. 33

    who undermine them.

  34. 34

They plot slyly to convert them from You,

  35. 35

weigh them down to weaken them.

  36. 36

They cry to You when exhausted

  37. 37

to find respite from their heavy burden.

  38. 38

    They express prayer, standing crowded,

  39. 39

    סְלִיחָה מְבַקְּשִׁים בְּקָדְקֹד כָּפוּף.

    request pardon with bowed head;

  40. 40

    oppressors enrage them,

  41. 41

    וּנְתָנוּם לְשִׁיסוּף.

    seeking their extermination;

  42. 42

may they be confounded and annihilated.

  43. 43

Redeem Your followers from total destruction,

  44. 44

save them from enemies and elevate them,

  45. 45

    command the salvation

  46. 46

of those who seek You in prayer,

  47. 47

    justify them in judgment

  48. 48

    from hidden and open [sins].

  49. 49

Jealous avenger, be jealous for Your Name,

  50. 50

    cut away the yoke thongs

  51. 51

    from Your people’s neck.

  52. 52

See our suffering and repent from Your anger,

  53. 53

    fight our battle

  54. 54

    against the people You damned.

  55. 55

Repay sevenfold those who anguish me,

  56. 56

    besot Your arrows

  57. 57

with the blood of my oppressors.

  58. 58

    Turn Your ear

  59. 59

to the sound of my supplications,

  60. 60

accept me when I call out, “Adonoy, Adonoy.”

  61. 61

    Almighty! King!

  62. 62

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  63. 63

    governs with kindness

  64. 64

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  65. 65

He removes their sins one by one,

  66. 66

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  67. 67

    and pardon to transgressors.

  68. 68

    Acting righteously

  69. 69

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  70. 70

    not according to their wickedness

  71. 71

    does He repay them.

  72. 72

    Almighty!

  73. 73

    You instructed us to recite

  74. 74

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  75. 75

    remember unto us this day

  76. 76

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  77. 77

    as You made them known

  78. 78

to the humble Moses of old,

  79. 79

    as it is written,

  80. 80

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  81. 81

    and stood with him there,

  82. 82

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  83. 83

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  84. 84

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  85. 85

    and proclaimed:

  86. 86

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  87. 87

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  88. 88

    Slow to Anger,

  89. 89

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  90. 90

    Keeper of kindness

  91. 91

    for thousands of generations,

  92. 92

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  93. 93

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  94. 94

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  95. 95

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  96. 96

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  97. 97

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  98. 98

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  99. 99

    “For You, my Master,

  100. 100

    are good and forgiving,

  101. 101

    and abounding in kindness

  102. 102

to all who call upon You.”

  103. 103

For there is no righteous man on earth

  104. 104

who [always] does good and never sins.

  105. 105

For the inclination of man’s heart

  106. 106

leans to evil from his youth.

  107. 107

For You search out our iniquities,

  108. 108

    and scrutinize our sins.

  109. 109

You have set our iniquities before You,

  110. 110

    the sins of our youth

  111. 111

before the light of Your countenance.

  112. 112

    אֱנוֹשׁ כֶּחָצִיר יָמָיו

    As for man, his days are as grass;

  113. 113

as the flower of the field,

  114. 114

    so he flourishes.

  115. 115

And You, Adonoy, are gracious and merciful,

  116. 116

    slow to anger,

  117. 117

and abundant in kindness and truth.

  118. 118

As a father has compassion on his children

  119. 119

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  120. 120

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  121. 121

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  122. 122

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  123. 123

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  124. 124

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  125. 125

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  126. 126

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  127. 127

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  128. 128

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  129. 129

    in accordance with the greatness

  130. 130

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  131. 131

and as You forgave this people

  132. 132

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  133. 133

    And there it is said:

  134. 134

    “And Adonoy said,

  135. 135

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  136. 136

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  137. 137

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  138. 138

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  139. 139

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  140. 140

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  141. 141

but because of Your great mercy.

  142. 142

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  143. 143

My Master, listen and take action,

  144. 144

    do not delay!

  145. 145

    For Your sake, my God,

  146. 146

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  147. 147

over Your city and over Your people.
