Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Fourth Day of the Ten Days of Penitence, Chapter 7

‹›
  1. 1

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

    Establish peace for us,

  4. 4

seal our fate that we may live.

  5. 5

We will arrange a prayer before You,

  6. 6

    [through] repentance, prayer, and charity,

  7. 7

    we shall see Your countenance

  8. 8

so that we may cling to God,

  9. 9

and the result of the charity shall be

  10. 10

peace.1As a reward for our charity God will give us peace.

  11. 11

Peace to the far one2I.e. the penitent. and the near one3I.e. the righteous one.,

  12. 12

    אֶל עִיר מָצוֹר.

    to the besieged city;

  13. 13

    a small city

  14. 14

and a great king has surrounded it

  15. 15

to prevent escape.4“A small … escape.” A parable that compares man to a small city, the evil inclination—to a king and the good inclination to a wise and poor man.

  16. 16

    The poor wise one

  17. 17

will facilitate escape for the city

  18. 18

    without need for fortifications.

  19. 19

The good inclination depends [on You],

  20. 20

    [therefore] preserve [for him] peace.

  21. 21

An abundance of peace [shall there be]

  22. 22

to those that love Your Torah

  23. 23

and no illness [shall befall them].

  24. 24

    You Who saves Your nation,

  25. 25

    and Who are their strength,

  26. 26

    their escape and their hope—

  27. 27

    judge Your people with compassion,

  28. 28

and command the deliverance of Jacob.

  29. 29

    And let Your nation reside

  30. 30

    in a dwelling of peace.

  31. 31

We hoped for peace and goodness

  32. 32

but we suffered destruction and ruin.

  33. 33

To those who need to leave or to enter [the city]

  34. 34

they cannot enter or leave.5Out of fear.

  35. 35

But, if He will forgive our sins

  36. 36

    as a Kingly gift,

  37. 37

then I would be in His eyes

  38. 38

as one who [sought and] found peace.

  39. 39

[Bring us] peace, charity and kindness

  40. 40

to whiten the red thread.6On Yom Kippur a red thread was tied to a goat which was sent to Azazel and there pushed down the mountainside. The red thread would miraculously turn white as a sign of forgiveness from God.

  41. 41

    Adonoy, deliver Your people—

  42. 42

    the remnant.

  43. 43

    Establish a covenant with them

  44. 44

as the prophet foretold and engraved:

  45. 45

“And I will establish with them

  46. 46

    a covenant of peace.”

  47. 47

    Call with peace

  48. 48

    to Your perfect dove [saying:]

  49. 49

    “Let Me hear your voice,

  50. 50

for the sound of your voice is sweet

  51. 51

and your vision is lovely,” when you pray.

  52. 52

He will expand the place of your dwelling,

  53. 53

the Protector of Jacob will redeem you,

  54. 54

the One Who makes your borders peaceful.

  55. 55

will make peace for the humiliated people,

  57. 57

    a denigrated and trampled nation

  58. 58

    by an oppressor who plunders.

  59. 59

    [A nation] dragged and plucked

  60. 60

will [eventually] present tribute,7I.e. when the Temple will be rebuilt we will again offer sacrifices.

  61. 61

    as the prophet promised,

  62. 62

and that will be [real] peace.

  63. 63

    [God, whose Name is] ‘Sholom,’

  64. 64

  66. 66

    The ministers of Edom

  67. 67

    He accepts penitents

  78. 78

    with an outstretched hand

  92. 92

They will play with you on their laps11The nations of the world will yet come to love Israel and delight in them as a father playing with his child in his lap.

  128. 128

Then their King will pass before them,

  129. 129

  146. 146

    how great is its goodness!

  147. 147

    For they shall explicitly see

  148. 148

when He shall return to Zion,

  149. 149

    and this entire nation

  150. 150

shall come to its place20I.e. the land of Israel. in peace.

  151. 151

Peace has turned to bitterness for me

  152. 152

for they have plundered my land.

  153. 153

    They looted and trampled,

  154. 154

    they overpowered and became haughty.

  155. 155

    The nations destroyed the cities

  156. 156

  157. 157

    They bite with their teeth

  158. 158

but [outwardly] they call for peace.

  159. 159

Call for peace unto the Jewish nation

  160. 160

and seek to bring them up from the pit.21I.e. the exile.

  161. 161

    From east and west

  162. 162

    gather in their remnants.

  163. 163

    of Edom and Moab.

  164. 164

    Break the heavy yoke

  165. 165

    Pursue them,

  166. 166

    and remove peace from them.

  167. 167

    Reward Your servants with peace,

  168. 168

You, Who created heaven and earth.

  169. 169

    In time of oppression

  170. 170

    He responds to free them.

  171. 171

Oh, how the gold has tarnished

  172. 172

and the golden vessel deteriorated.22“Oh … deteriorated” i.e. Oh, how the stature of the People of Israel has fallen!

  173. 173

For it has been too long

  174. 174

    that our soul has resided

  175. 175

together with the enemies of peace.23Our lengthy exposure to the nations of the world has been the cause of our deterioration.

  176. 176

[God] bring peace to the land

  177. 177

and lead the nations to be under our rule.

  178. 178

Rather than ourselves, let the nations

  179. 179

    suffer constant ruination,

  180. 180

for Adonoy judges [them] with fire,

  181. 181

but to His armies24I.e. nation of Israel. let Him give strength.

  182. 182

    Oh that I may hear

  183. 183

that which the Almighty Adonoy speaks

  184. 184

when He speaks words of peace.

  185. 185

    May there be endless peace

  186. 186

    upon the throne

  187. 187

of the stock of the ‘young lion.’25“The stock … lion” i.e. the Kingdom of Judah.

  188. 188

    May his light shine forever

  189. 189

  191. 191

so that on “the third day”27I.e. the coming third Temple.

  192. 192

we may be established and live.

  193. 193

    To David and his descendants

  194. 194

    and to his throne

  195. 195

    יִהְיֶה שָׁלוֹם:

    let there be peace.

  196. 196

    Almighty! King!

  197. 197

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  198. 198

    governs with kindness

  199. 199

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  200. 200

He removes their sins one by one,

  201. 201

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  202. 202

    and pardon to transgressors.

  203. 203

    Acting righteously

  204. 204

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  205. 205

    not according to their wickedness

  206. 206

    does He repay them.

  207. 207

    Almighty!

  208. 208

    You instructed us to recite

  209. 209

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  210. 210

    remember unto us this day

  211. 211

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  212. 212

    as You made them known

  213. 213

to the humble Moses of old,

  214. 214

    as it is written,

  215. 215

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  216. 216

    and stood with him there,

  217. 217

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  218. 218

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  219. 219

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  220. 220

    and proclaimed:

  221. 221

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  222. 222

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  223. 223

    Slow to Anger,

  224. 224

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  225. 225

    Keeper of kindness

  226. 226

    for thousands of generations,

  227. 227

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  228. 228

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  229. 229

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  230. 230

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  231. 231

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  232. 232

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  233. 233

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  234. 234

    “For You, my Master,

  235. 235

    are good and forgiving,

  236. 236

    and abounding in kindness

  237. 237

to all who call upon You.”

  238. 238

    The [correct offerings to God,

  239. 239

    a broken spirit,

  240. 240

    לֵב־נִשְׁבָּר וְנִדְכֶּה

    a broken and humbled heart;

  241. 241

    God, You will not despise.

  242. 242

You will grant truth to Jacob,

  243. 243

    kindliness to Abraham,

  244. 244

as You have sworn to our fathers

  245. 245

    from the days of old.

  246. 246

    And the kindliness of Adonoy

  247. 247

    is forever and ever

  248. 248

    upon those who fear Him,

  249. 249

    and His righteousness

  250. 250

    upon children’s children.

  251. 251

    קָרוֹב יְהוָה לְנִשְׁבְּרֵי־לֵב

    Adonoy is near to the broken-hearted;

  252. 252

and those crushed in spirit, He delivers.

  253. 253

As a father has compassion on his children

  254. 254

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  255. 255

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  256. 256

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  257. 257

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  258. 258

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  259. 259

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  260. 260

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  261. 261

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  262. 262

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  263. 263

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  264. 264

    in accordance with the greatness

  265. 265

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  266. 266

and as You forgave this people

  267. 267

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  268. 268

    And there it is said:

  269. 269

    “And Adonoy said,

  270. 270

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  271. 271

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  272. 272

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  273. 273

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  274. 274

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  275. 275

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  276. 276

but because of Your great mercy.

  277. 277

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  278. 278

My Master, listen and take action,

  279. 279

    do not delay!

  280. 280

    For Your sake, my God,

  281. 281

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  282. 282

over Your city and over Your people.
