Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Fourth Day of the Ten Days of Penitence, Chapter 6

‹›
  1. 1

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

    You are my portion

  4. 4

and the rock of my heart

  5. 5

I longed for You in the night

  6. 6

    עַל מִשְׁכָּבִי.

    as I lay on my bed;

  7. 7

to You, Adonoy, I call when my heart is faint.

  8. 8

    We have betrayed You

  9. 9

and have thus increased Your fury and anger,

  10. 10

we have been stepped on and crushed,

  11. 11

for we have no good deeds.

  12. 12

    Our distress has greatly increased,

  13. 13

for we have erred in our vision [of truth]

  14. 14

and stumbled in our judgement, and [even]

  15. 15

all our righteous deeds are as filthy rags.

  16. 16

    We lack knowledge,

  17. 17

    we are simpletons without wit,

  18. 18

even high angels, You charge with folly,

  19. 19

how much more so man, who is but a worm.

  20. 20

Behold, You lift the isles as dust particles,

  21. 21

should You search and examine wrongdoings,

  22. 22

    what could we speak

  23. 23

and how could we justify ourselves?

  24. 24

I searched for one to set up the fence

  25. 25

and stand in the breach,1To protect us from destruction with his prayers and good deeds.

  26. 26

    וְיָשָׁר אַיִן פָּנִים לְהָרֵץ.

    but there is no upright one to appease You;

  27. 27

the pious man has perished from the earth.

  28. 28

My destined time2Of my redemption from exile.

  29. 29

    is hidden from my knowledge,

  30. 30

    my iniquities have caused

  31. 31

    קַרְנִי לְהִגָּדַע.

    my glory to be cut down;

  32. 32

    indeed, I acknowledge my transgressions.

  33. 33

    I cry of violent robbery,

  34. 34

    וְאֵין מוֹשִׁיעַ.

    but there is none to deliver me;

  35. 35

why is the righteous surrounded by the wicked?

  36. 36

Your hand is not powerless to deliver us.

  37. 37

Your lambs [Israel] are beaten by [the enemy]

  38. 38

who roar [with triumph] like the sea,

  39. 39

    they are ravished and robbed

  40. 40

    בְּיַד אוּמִים.

    in the hands of the nations;

  41. 41

“Why have You forgotten us forever,

  42. 42

forsaken us for so long a time.”3Lamentations 5:20.

  43. 43

Jacob has been given for a spoil,

  44. 44

    וְיִשְֹרָאֵל לְבוֹזְזִים.

    and Israel to plunderers;

  45. 45

    she who was honored

  46. 46

with a canopy of seven clouds4When she left Egypt.

  47. 47

is now dumb like a sheep before shearing.5Her crying is of no avail.

  48. 48

The miser and degenerate [are seated]

  49. 49

like a king at his table,

  50. 50

    while the generous and noble

  51. 51

are banished for their debt,6The sins of the vile and degenerate.

  52. 52

    like an unwanted vessel.

  53. 53

Do not preserve [our iniquity] forever

  54. 54

    to destroy us,

  55. 55

when Your left hand thrusts us away,

  56. 56

    יְמִינְךָ תְקָרְבֵנוּ.

    let Your right hand draw us near;

  57. 57

    O Master, we are oppressed,

  58. 58

    be our surety.

  59. 59

We have had a bad name from long

  60. 60

and yet You have given hope to the repentant

  61. 61

    with a generous spirit, [saying:]

  62. 62

    “I will heal their rebelliousness,

  63. 63

I will love them in free-willed devotion.”

  64. 64

My eyes flow like a stream with tears,

  65. 65

    the mockers enjoy tranquility

  66. 66

    וְשָׁבְתוּ גִילַי.

    while my gladness has ceased;

  67. 67

    and as for me,

  68. 68

in an instant my feet would have slipped.

  69. 69

    Seek the lost sheep,

  70. 70

the people that will be saved [by You],

  71. 71

even though they have been found with sin

  72. 72

    and transgression from the womb,

  73. 73

and the righteous man has fallen

  74. 74

    before the wicked.

  75. 75

    [Your] testimony to Jacob

  76. 76

    is sealed in the Torah,

  77. 77

that in the land of their enemy,

  78. 78

You promised to preserve them alive,

  79. 79

even were they to be so situated.

  80. 80

    Remove transgressions and erase guilt,

  81. 81

lest hell enlarges itself to squeeze in7To take in more souls.

  82. 82

and opens its mouth without limit.

  83. 83

Behold the storm8The exile is compared to a storm. and draw near to free us,

  84. 84

raise us and pull us from the muddy mire,

  85. 85

    שׁוּבָה יְהֹוָה חַלְּצָה נַפְשֵׁנוּ:

    return, Adonoy, free our souls.

  86. 86

  87. 87

  102. 102

and even should He slay me,

  103. 103

    yet I trust in Him.

  104. 104

  129. 129

to the humble Moses of old,

  130. 130

    as it is written,

  131. 131

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  134. 134

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  135. 135

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  136. 136

    וַיִּקְרָא:

    and proclaimed:

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  145. 145

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  146. 146

    “For You, my Master,

  151. 151

    are good and forgiving,

  152. 152

Too long has our soul dwelt

  155. 155

    אֲ‍נִי־שָׁלוֹם

    I am for peace;

  157. 157

    but when I speak

    they are for war.

  159. 159

Let there be peace within your moats

  160. 160

    serenity withing your palaces.

  161. 161

Peace, peace to the far one

  162. 162

    and to the near one,

  163. 163

says Adonoy, and I will heal him.

  164. 164

    Adonoy, arrange peace for us,

  165. 165

    for indeed all our works,

  166. 166

    have You done for us.

  167. 167

Adonoy will give strength to His people,

  168. 168

Adony will bless His people with peace.

  169. 169

Rule and awe are with Him,

He Who makes peace in His high heavens.

  171. 171

For you will go out [of exile] with joy,

  172. 172

and be led forth in peace [to Zion].

  173. 173

As a father has compassion on his children

  174. 174

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  175. 175

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  176. 176

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  177. 177

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  178. 178

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  179. 179

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  180. 180

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  181. 181

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  182. 182

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  183. 183

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  184. 184

    in accordance with the greatness

  185. 185

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  186. 186

and as You forgave this people

  187. 187

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  188. 188

    And there it is said:

  189. 189

    “And Adonoy said,

  190. 190

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  191. 191

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  192. 192

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  193. 193

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  194. 194

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  195. 195

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  196. 196

but because of Your great mercy.

  197. 197

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  198. 198

My Master, listen and take action,

  199. 199

    do not delay!

  200. 200

    For Your sake, my God,

  201. 201

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  202. 202

over Your city and over Your people.
