Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Fourth Day of the Ten Days of Penitence, Chapter 8

‹›
  1. 1

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

Abraham taught the knowledge of God

  4. 4

before it was known to all the world.

  5. 5

He expounded Your Name to all mankind,

  6. 6

and revealed what was hidden and unknown.

  7. 7

He abhorred and broke the idols,

  8. 8

the misinformed, he attached to Your Name,

  9. 9

he chose the upright way [of life],

  10. 10

Torah and Mitzvos he kept without tarrying.

  11. 11

You rescued him from the fire of the Chaldeans,

  12. 12

You protected him in the valley of Siddim,1When he battled the four kings in order to rescue Lot.

  13. 13

    You promised him:

  14. 14

“Your reward will be very great,”

  15. 15

    and You distinguished him

  16. 16

    with great wealth and honor.

  17. 17

    And when he replied, crying:

  18. 18

    “What will You give me?

  19. 19

when I have neither root nor branch.”2Abraham had not yet been blessed with a child.

  20. 20

You strengthened him in a vision,

  21. 21

telling him, “this one3Eliezer. See Genesis 15:4. shall not be your heir.”

  22. 22

    With his first fruit [Isaac]

  23. 23

You endowed him in his hundredth year,

  24. 24

and when You desired him4Isaac. as an offering

  25. 25

both of them rejoiced with all their hearts,

  26. 26

and hastened to do Your will.

  27. 27

    As Abraham suppressed his compassion

  28. 28

    to do Your will,

  29. 29

    so may Your compassion suppress

  30. 30

    Your anger from Your flock.

  31. 31

Their hearts and souls were ready,

  32. 32

so too, may our prayers before You

  33. 33

    be accepted as an incense-offering.

  34. 34

He hastened and took the knife,

  35. 35

    therefore save their seed

  36. 36

    מִמִּיתָה מְשַׁכֶּלֶת:

    from childless death;

  37. 37

    the one son was bound

  38. 38

    like a lamb for slaughter,

  39. 39

    therefore favor our prayers

  40. 40

    like a burnt-offering and sacrifice.

  41. 41

He arranged the wood and kindled the fire,

  42. 42

therefore as we stand praying this day

  43. 43

let us not be put to shame.

  44. 44

You answered him from the highest heavens,

  45. 45

    and You swore to him

  46. 46

twice by Your Name.5That You would remember his seed for good.

  47. 47

You redeemed him [Isaac] with a ram

  48. 48

    caught in a thicket,

  49. 49

    therefore,

  50. 50

do not disgrace our petition and affliction.6Our fasting on Yom Kippur.

  51. 51

Hear our cry and hearken to our entreaty,

  52. 52

in the merit of the Patriarch [Jacob]

  53. 53

who traveled to Succos.7See Genesis 33:17.

  54. 54

Let the voice of him who brings tidings8Moshiach will bring tidings of our redemption.

  55. 55

    be heard in the world,

  56. 56

to redeem the people [who are]

  57. 57

the offspring of the everlasting hills.9The Matriarchs were so called.

  58. 58

    Have mercy on the congregation

  59. 59

    adorned [with Torah and Mitzvos],

  60. 60

the plant of the Twelve Tribes.

  61. 61

Let Your Divine Presence dwell among us,

  62. 62

lead us to the borders of our land,

  63. 63

    turn to us with compassion,

  64. 64

    for You are called

  65. 65

    [God] full of compassion.

  66. 66

    Almighty! King!

  67. 67

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  68. 68

    governs with kindness

  69. 69

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  70. 70

He removes their sins one by one,

  71. 71

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  72. 72

    and pardon to transgressors.

  73. 73

    Acting righteously

  74. 74

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  75. 75

    not according to their wickedness

  76. 76

    does He repay them.

  77. 77

    Almighty!

  78. 78

    You instructed us to recite

  79. 79

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  80. 80

    remember unto us this day

  81. 81

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  82. 82

    as You made them known

  83. 83

to the humble Moses of old,

  84. 84

    as it is written,

  85. 85

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  86. 86

    and stood with him there,

  87. 87

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  88. 88

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  89. 89

    וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו

    And Adonoy passed before him [Moses];

  90. 90

    and proclaimed:

  91. 91

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  92. 92

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  93. 93

    Slow to Anger,

  94. 94

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  95. 95

    Keeper of kindness

  96. 96

    for thousands of generations,

  97. 97

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  98. 98

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  99. 99

and Acquitter of those who repent.”

  100. 100

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  101. 101

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  102. 102

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  103. 103

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  104. 104

    “For You, my Master,

  105. 105

    are good and forgiving,

  106. 106

    and abounding in kindness

  107. 107

to all who call upon You.”
