אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ

Our God and God of our fathers!

אֶזְרָחִי מֵעֵבֶר הַנָּהָר.

Abraham who came from beyond the river¹The Euphrates River.

אֵלֶיךָ רָץ וְלֹא־אֵחַר.

hurried to recognize You without delay,

בְּחַנְתּוֹ בְּנִסְיוֹנוֹת עֶשֶֹר.

You tried him with ten tests,

וְנִמְצָא שָׁלֵם בְּלִי־חֹסֶר:

and he was found perfect without blemish.

גֹּרָשׁ מֵאֶרֶץ מוֹלַדְתּוֹ.

He was driven from his birthplace,

גּוֹי בָּעוֹלָם שַֹמְתּוֹ.

yet You made him a world-nation;

דְּבָרְךָ הֵקִים

he fulfilled Your command,

וְלֹא הֵפֵר.

and did not break it,

וְנָם אָנֹכִי עָפָר וָאֵפֶר:

and he said: “I am but dust and ashes.”

הִקְרִיב חָלָב וְחֶמְאָה.

He brought [the angels] milk and butter,

וְנֶחֱנַט פְּרִי לְמֵאָה.

and his fruit ripened when he was a hundred.²Isaac was born when Abraham was a hundred years old.

וְנָאַמְתָּ־לוֹ

And when You said to him:

הַעֲלֵהוּ לְעוֹלָה.

“Bring him up as a burnt-offering,”

בִּקַּע עֵצִים

he split the wood, laid it in order,

וְעָרַךְ וְהֶעֱלָה:

and put him [Isaac] upon us.

זְכָר־לָנוּ הַיּוֹם עֲקֵדָתוֹ.

Remember for us this day, his binding,³Isaac was bound on the altar.

וְהַשְׁלָמַת יְחִידָתוֹ

and his self sacrifice.

חֹן הַיּוֹם

Be gracious this day

שִׁבְטֵי־תָּם.

to the tribes of [Jacob] the perfect one,

וְתִשְׁכֹּן בְּמַקְהֲלוֹתָם:

and dwell among their congregations.

טִיעַת מַטּוֹת שְׁנֵים־עָשָֹר.

The offspring of the Twelve Tribes,

מֶזֶג מֵהֶם אַל־יֶחְסַר.

may they never cease to thrive,

יְדִידוּת מִשְׁכְּנוֹתֶיךָ תְּבִיאֵם.

bring them into Your beloved Dwelling,

בְּהַר נַחֲלָתְךָ

in the mountain of Your inheritance

תִּטָּעֵם:

may they be planted.

כַּנֵּס כָּל פְּזוּרֵי נִדָּחֵיהֶם.

Gather all the scattered of their exile,

נַהֲגֵם לְבֵית מַאֲוָיֵּיהֶם.

lead them to the House of their longing.

לְקוּחִים מִמָּוֶת תַּחְשֹׂךְ.

Spare those who are sentenced to death,⁴For their sins.

פֶּה מַשְׂטִין סְתֹם וַחֲשֹךְ:

close the mouth of the accuser and spare [us].

נַשְּׂאֵנוּ וְנַטְּלֵנוּ כִּימֵי־עוֹלָם.

Bear and raise us as in the days of old,

וְכַפֶּר־לָנוּ כָּל־זָדוֹן וְנֶעְלָם.

and atone every wanton and unintentional sin,

סְלַח וַעֲבֹר עַל פֶּשַׁע.

forgive and overlook our transgression,

וּמְחַל אַשְׁמָה וָרֶשַׁע:

and pardon our guilt and wickedness.

עֲנֵה הַיּוֹם כָּל מְיַחֲלֶיךָ.

Answer this day all those who hope in You,

כִּי־עֵינֵינוּ נְשֹוּאוֹת אֵלֶיךָ.

for our eyes are lifted to You.

פְּדֵנוּ מִצָּרָה וְצוּקָה.

Redeem us from trouble and distress,

וְתַעֲלֵנוּ מִשּׁוּחָה עֲמֻקָּה:

and bring us up from the deep pit.

צַעֲקָתֵנוּ הַיּוֹם תְּקַבֵּל:

Accept our cry on this day,

וְתַצִּילֵנוּ מִידֵי מְחַבֵּל.

and save us from the hands of the Satan,

קוֹמֵם בֵּית־שְׁכִינַת הוֹדֶךָ.

erect the House of Your glorious Presence,

וְאַל־תְּנַבֵּל כִּסֵּא כְבוֹדֶךָ:

and disgrace not the Throne of Your Glory.

רְפָא עַמְּךָ מִכָּל־שֶׁבֶר.

Heal Your people from all [their] wounds,

כִּי־בָאוּ בָנִים עַד־מַשְׁבֵּר.

for [Your] children have come to the birthstool⁵Their pain is like that of a woman giving birth.

שָׁבָץ אֲחָזַתְנוּ

we are seized in trembling

כַּיּוֹלֵדָה.

like a woman in labor

וְכֹחַ אַיִן לְלֵדָה:

who has no strength to give birth.

תִּגְאַל עַמְּךָ מֵהַבְהַב.

Redeem Your people from Gehinnom,

כִּי־עָלֶיךָ מַשְׁלִיכִים יַהַב.

for upon You they cast their burden,

תַּנְחֵם לְעִיר הַבְּנוּיָה.

lead them to [Your] rebuilt city,

תְּמַהֵר תִּשְׁבִּי

hasten [the arrival of Elijah] the Tishbite,

מְנַחֵם וּנְחֶמְיָה:

[and the Moshiach] [who is called] Menachem and Nechemiah.

אֵל מֶֽלֶךְ.

Almighty! King!

יוֹשֵׁב עַל כִּסֵּא רַחֲמִים.

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

מִתְנַהֵג בַּחֲסִידוּת.

governs with kindness

מוֹחֵל עֲו‍ֹנוֹת עַמּוֹ.

forgives the iniquities of His people.

מַעֲבִיר רִאשׁוֹן רִאשׁוֹן.

He removes their sins one by one,

מַרְבֶּה מְחִילָה לְחַטָּאִים

increasing forgiveness to sinners,

וּסְלִיחָה לְפוֹשְׁעִים.

and pardon to transgressors.

עוֹשֶׂה צְדָקוֹת

Acting righteously

עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

with all who are of flesh and spirit;

לֹא כְרָעָתָם

not according to their wickedness

תִּגְמוֹל:

does He repay them.

אֵל

Almighty!

הוֹרֵיתָ לָנוּ לוֹמַר

You instructed us to recite

שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

the thirteen Divine attributes;

וּזְכָר לָֽנוּ הַיּוֹם

remember unto us this day

בְּרִית שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

כְּמוֹ שֶׁהוֹדַֽעְתָּ

as You made them known

לֶעָנָו מִקֶּֽדֶם.

to the humble Moses of old,

כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב

as it is written,

וַיֵּרֶד יְהֹוָה בֶּֽעָנָן

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

וַיִּתְיַצֵּב עִמּוֹ שָׁם

and stood with him there,

וַיִּקְרָא בְשֵׁם יְהֹוָה:

and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

קהל וחזן:

Congregation and Chazzan:

וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses];

וַיִּקְרָא:

and proclaimed:

יְהֹוָה יְהֹוָה

Adonoy, Adonoy,

אֵל רַחוּם וְחַנּוּן

Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

אֶֽרֶךְ אַפַּֽיִם

Slow to Anger,

וְרַב חֶֽסֶד וֶֽאֱמֶת:

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

נֹצֵר חֶֽסֶד

Keeper of kindness

לָאֲלָפִים

for thousands of generations,

נֹשֵׂא עָו‍ֹן וָפֶֽשַׁע

Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

וְחַטָּאָה

and sin;

וְנַקֵּה:

and Acquitter of those who repent.”

וְסָלַחְתָּ לַעֲו‍ֹנֵֽנוּ וּלְחַטָּאתֵֽנוּ

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

וּנְחַלְתָּֽנוּ:

and take us for Your inheritance.”

סְלַח לָֽנוּ אָבִֽינוּ כִּי חָטָֽאנוּ.

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

מְחַל לָֽנוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ כִּי פָשָֽׁעְנוּ:

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

כִּי אַתָּה אֲדֹנָי

“For You, my Master,

טוֹב וְסַלָּח

are good and forgiving,

וְרַב חֶֽסֶד

and abounding in kindness

לְכָל קֹרְאֶֽיךָ:

to all who call upon You.”
