Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Second Day of the Ten Days of Penitence, Chapter 5

‹›
  1. 1

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

I resemble a lion in the forest1Based on Jeremiah 12:8. This is a reference to an unfit person who steps down to the Ark to act as Chazzan. See Mesechet Taanis 16b.

  4. 4

and I am so likened because of my guilt.

  5. 5

    My utterance is foolish,

  6. 6

    מִלָּתִי לְשׁוֹן הֲבַאי.

    my words are exaggerated;

  7. 7

I am deprived of intercessors2Lit. those who knock at Your door.

  8. 8

    such as [Mordchai] ben Kish,

  9. 9

Mispar and Bigvai.3These were colleagues of Mordchai.

  10. 10

    [Therefore] every head is sick

  11. 11

    and every heart is faint.

  12. 12

    Faint, exiled, and despised,

  13. 13

    I am pained and distressed,

  14. 14

I am chased about and broken,

  15. 15

I am filled and intoxicated with wormwood,

  16. 16

    I am oppressed by masters

  17. 17

    חִנָּם לָהֶם נִמְכַּרְתִּי.

    to whom I was sold for naught;

  18. 18

yet, when my soul fainted within me,

  19. 19

    I remembered Adonoy.

  20. 20

I remembered Your kindness and love

  21. 21

which were like a banner over me;4A reference to the banners of the tribes as they were encamped in the wilderness.

  22. 22

    they removed my guilt

  23. 23

    and made me Your treasure.

  24. 24

    But now, Your flock [Israel]

  25. 25

is left with only entreaty and prayer.

  26. 26

May the poorest among men [Israel]

  27. 27

rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

  28. 28

Your servants will exult and rejoice

  29. 29

when You remember my walls;5Jerusalem is the speaker.

  30. 30

to surround them with precious stones—

  31. 31

    when [will You do this]?

  32. 32

My city is become a ruined heap forever,

  33. 33

    וְלַשֶּׁפֶל רָמוֹתַי.

    and my heights are laid low;

  34. 34

and You, Adonoy, for how long?

  35. 35

    When will You revive us,

  36. 36

and bring us up from the abyss?

  37. 37

    O glorious One,

  38. 38

loosen and remove the straps of our yoke,

  39. 39

    fill our storehouses with plenty,

  40. 40

    וְהַצְלִיחָה מִפְעָלֵנוּ.

    and prosper our endeavors;

  41. 41

may Your kindness, Adonoy, be upon us.

  42. 42

May Your mercy be full upon us,

  43. 43

as we seek You in distress.

  44. 44

I stretch out my hands to You,

  45. 45

I seek You from within [my heart],

  46. 46

my soul thirsts after You in the night,6A metaphor for exile.

  47. 47

    כִּי אִוִּיתִיךָ.

    for I have desired You;

  48. 48

Adonoy, put me not to shame

  49. 49

    when I call upon You.

  50. 50

I call upon You from the depth,7Of my heart.

  51. 51

I lift my eyes [to the heavens],

  52. 52

I lift my hands to the heights,

  53. 53

    הֱפִיצוֹתִי מַעְיָנַי

    I let my fountain of tears spread out;

  54. 54

O look at my virtuous deeds,

  55. 55

blot out and remove my wickedness.

  56. 56

    Adonoy, hear my prayer,

  57. 57

    give ear to my supplication.

  58. 58

Give ear to my supplication, my Foster,

  59. 59

    my Creator, and my Pedagogue.

  60. 60

To You are revealed and known

  61. 61

    my wishes and hopes—

  62. 62

that my intentional sins be sunken,8In the depths of the sea.

  63. 63

and my unintentional ones be atoned.

  64. 64

Give ear to my words, Adonoy,

  65. 65

    and consider my meditations.

  66. 66

May my meditations be regarded as pure,

  67. 67

    and my prayer correct.

  68. 68

    Hear, O God,

  69. 69

forgive my unworthy and perverse deeds,

  70. 70

    strengthen those who praise You,

  71. 71

    and accept my words,

  72. 72

and let the meditations of my heart

  73. 73

be before You, my Rock and my Redeemer.

  74. 74

    Almighty! King!

  75. 75

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  76. 76

    governs with kindness

  77. 77

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  78. 78

He removes their sins one by one,

  79. 79

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  80. 80

    and pardon to transgressors.

  81. 81

    Acting righteously

  82. 82

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  83. 83

    not according to their wickedness

  84. 84

    does He repay them.

  85. 85

    Almighty!

  86. 86

    You instructed us to recite

  87. 87

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  88. 88

    remember unto us this day

  89. 89

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  90. 90

    as You made them known

  91. 91

to the humble Moses of old,

  92. 92

    as it is written,

  93. 93

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  94. 94

    and stood with him there,

  95. 95

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  96. 96

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  97. 97

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  98. 98

    and proclaimed:

  99. 99

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  100. 100

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  101. 101

    Slow to Anger,

  102. 102

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  103. 103

    Keeper of kindness

  104. 104

    for thousands of generations,

  105. 105

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  106. 106

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  107. 107

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  108. 108

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  109. 109

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  110. 110

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  111. 111

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  112. 112

    “For You, my Master,

  113. 113

    are good and forgiving,

  114. 114

    and abounding in kindness

  115. 115

to all who call upon You.”

  116. 116

    O Israel, return

  117. 117

    unto Adonoy, your God,

  118. 118

for you have stumbled in your iniquity.

  119. 119

Adonoy, do not rebuke us with Your anger,

  120. 120

nor chastise us with Your rage.

  121. 121

We are sunk in muddy depths [of sin]

  122. 122

    without a foothold,

  123. 123

we have come into deep waters

  124. 124

and the whirlpool has swept us away.

  125. 125

Cause us to return to You, Adonoy,

  126. 126

    וְנָשׁוּבָה

    and we shall return;

  127. 127

renew our days as of old.

  128. 128

As a father has compassion on his children

  129. 129

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  130. 130

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  131. 131

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  132. 132

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  133. 133

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  134. 134

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  135. 135

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  136. 136

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  137. 137

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  138. 138

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  139. 139

    in accordance with the greatness

  140. 140

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  141. 141

and as You forgave this people

  142. 142

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  143. 143

    And there it is said:

  144. 144

    “And Adonoy said,

  145. 145

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  146. 146

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  147. 147

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  148. 148

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  149. 149

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  150. 150

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  151. 151

but because of Your great mercy.

  152. 152

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  153. 153

My Master, listen and take action,

  154. 154

    do not delay!

  155. 155

    For Your sake, my God,

  156. 156

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  157. 157

over Your city and over Your people.
