ויראת מאלהיך אני ה' זהו כלל גדול שבתורה על כל דבר שמסור ללב נאמר ויראת מאלהיך המכיר מחשבותיך לפיכך יהיו כל דבריך לשם שמים וכשתשמח בביתך תשמח לשם שמים וכן אמר החכם דברי חכמה המוסיפים חסידו' ומריב אחר אל תתעבר כי מה לך ולצרה זו. וכן אמר אל תדבר מדבר שאינו שלך כי בשלך תזכה וזה חובה היא לאחר אשר יריב עמו ואין חבין לאדם שלא בפניו. וכן אמר שלמה מחזיק באזני כלב עובר ומתעבר על ריב לא לו.
“But thou shalt fear thy God: I am the Lord” (Lev. 19:14). This is the great principle of the Law. Concerning matters which are dependent upon the heart, it is said, “ Thou shalt fear thy God” Who recognizes your thoughts,1Baba Metzia 58b. therefore let your thoughts be for the sake of heaven2Aboth 2:17. /3/ Ketuboth 11a. and when you rejoice in your home rejoice for the sake of heaven. Do not become involved in another’s quarrel, for what concern is it to you. And so did the sage say, “Do not express an opinion in a matter which is not your concern.” For in favoring one you will be condemning the other, and in a person’s absence, 3 you cannot act in his behalf to his disadvantage and so did Solomon say, “He who meddles in a quarrel not his own is like one who takes a passing dog by the ears” (Prov. 26:17).
