Do not shame your brother when he speaks conceitedly of matters that the mind cannot grasp and it is easy for you to topple him from his arrogance and seize him in his words. Do not be eager to do so, for what will you profit in the matter? Do not chide any person, even a gentile, for long after you forget, he will continue to recall it as in the case of that individual who herded pigs.1This refers to Diocletian who was supposed to have been a swine-herder near Tiberias prior to becoming emperor of Rome. Apparently he was tormented by children and when he was elevated to the purple he sought revenge. See also Midrash Rabbah, ed. Horeb, Genesis, Chapter LXIII, p. 132; J. T. Terumoth 8:4.
