והסר כעס מלבך והעבר רעה מבשרך. וזו היא מדה טובה ומעולה שבכל המדות כאשר תשמע איש או אשה מדבר עליך או כנגדך דבר שלא כהוגן הנח אצבעותיך באזניך כי כן אמרו חכמים מפני מה אצבעו' של אדם משופעות כיתדו' שאם ישמע אדם דבר שאינו הגון יניח את אצבעו באזנו. או תכוף אליה לתוכה ואל תשמע כלל וכל שכן אם תשמע אשה או איש אחד מדבר על חבירו או אשה מדברת על חברתה שאין לו להשיב כלל כי מה לו ולצרה זו אלא סתום אזניך ואל תשמע מחרפים זה את זה וטוב לך ומשול ברוחך והתאפק ושים לפיך מחסום בלי לחרף קרובך ואפי' ידבר על אביך או על אמך דבר שאינו הגון לא תשיב שלא כהוגן אלא אף אתה הקהה את שניו ואמור לו אין אתה אומר אמת ולא תשיב עוד דבר לא גדול ולא קטן:
“Therefore remove vexation from thy heart and put away evil from thy flesh” (Eccl. 11:10). And this is the best and most exalted of all the virtues. When you hear a man or woman say about you or against you something unfitting, put your fingers in your ears, for thus the scholars said, “Why are the fingers of a person shaped as pegs? So that if a person hears something which is not fitting let him place his finger or the lobe into his ear and not listen at all.”1Ketuboth 5b. All the more, if you hear a man speak about his neighbor or a woman speak about her neighbor, where one cannot refute at all, since it is not your concern, shut your ears and do not listen as they revile each other. It is best for you to rule your own spirit and restrain yourself. Put a seal on your mouth without ever shaming your neighbor. Even if he relates about your father or your mother matters that are unbecoming do not answer unworthily, rather set his teeth on edge and say to him, “You do not tell the truth,” 2Ibid., 14b. and do not say another thing either great or small.
