ומקשי בגמרא היכי קיימי רבנן ומתקני מילתא דאתי בה לידי סכנה דתניא לא יאכל אדם תרי ולא ישתה תרי. ומתרץ אמר רב נחמן בר יצחק אמר קרא ליל שמורים הוא לה' לילה המשומר ובא מן המזיקין, רבא אמר כוס של ברכה מצטרף לטובה ואינו מצטרף לרעה. פירוש כוס של ברכת המזון מצטרף לטובה עם השנים הראשונים ואין מצטרף לרעה להיות זוגות עם כוס רביעי. רבינא אמר כל חד וחד מצוה באפי נפשה היא. וכתבו הגאונים ורוב המפרשים הואיל וכל א' מארבעתן מצוה בפני עצמה צריך לברך בורא פרי הגפן על כל אחד מהם. וגם משום שההגדה היא היסח הדעת והפסק. וחכמי צרפת והרב רבינו יונה והרא"ש כתבו שאין לברך בורא פרי הגפן אלא על כוס ראשון וכוס של ברכת המזון בלבד. והעולם נהגו כדברי הגאונים.
The Gemara asks, “how could the Sages institute a matter that might bring a person to a state of danger …For it has been taught, “A person should not eat in pairs nor drink in pairs.” The Gemara answers, “Rav Naḥman said that a verse said: “It was a night of watching to the Lord” (Ex. 12:42), it is a night that remains guarded from harmful spirits.”24BT Pesaḥim 109b-110a See Rosh On Pesaḥim 10:24:1 “Rava said: The cup of blessing combines with the first two cups for good and it does not combine for bad. Peirush - This refers to the cup for the Birkat HaMazon25The Grace after Meals; literally The Blessing of the Meal joins for good with the first two and it does not combine with the fourth cup for evil. “Ravina said: Each cup is a separate mitzvah in its own right.”26Ibid. Pesaḥim The Geonim and many commentators explain that since each cup of wine is its own mitzvah, it is necessary to recite Borei P'ri HaGefen on each cup and also (one does so) because the Haggadah interrupts them. The Sages of France, Rabbeinu Yonah and the Rosh write that one only recites, “Borei P’ri HaGefen”27While Ashkenazic Jews say HaGafen, Sephardic Jews and Jews from Edot HaMizrach say HaGefen on the first cup and the third cup that is recited after the Grace after Meals. Most of the world follows the practice of the Geonim.28This is the Ashkenazic custom today. Literally “the word practices this way.”
