כנהר שוטף אשר יזרום ויסחב כל אשר על דרכו ימצא, אף אל תוך חורים וסדקים יחדור וישטוף, כן גם זרם דעות הדור את דעת היחיד ישטוף. יש אשר לא ירגיש היחיד מאומה, ובדעתו ידמה שדעתו אשר מאז איתן גם עתה, אבל באמת עליו יפעלו ועמהם מעט או הרבה יסחב, כעקימתם יתעקם ומן פגעיהם יפגום. לכן בכל אשר תוכל התרחק מהם ומהמונם. אבל בזה לבד מזרם השוטף עוד לא נפתרת ומשטף קצף עוד לא בטחת, כי האם אפשר לך אף שלא לדבר עם אנשים כלל. ומי הוא אשר יערב לך שבניך וב״ב שאינם מסותרים מן ההמון ושטיפים כמוך, לא יהיו הצנורות אשר ע״י, דלף דעות העולם גם אותך ידלוף. ומי הוא האיש אשר אף מלנשום את אויר העולם הרטוב ומלא דעות העולם, ימנע. חוק חקוק הוא, כי הקול רק עוף השמים יוליכו, והדעות ומחשבות אשר דקים וזכים מן הקול, אף גלי האויר יוליכו, ודרך האף ונקבי׳ העור אל האדם יכניסו. אי לזאת כמו שאי אפשר להאיש להישאר על מקומו בתוך זרם הנהר בשעה שהוא עומד, בלתי אם הולך הוא או שט ושואף הלאה. בין אם יוכל בין לא יוכל ללכת הלאה נגד הזרם, על מקומו על כל פנים ישאר. כן העומד ומשתפק במדת תורתו חסידתו קדושתו השגתו וכו׳ אשר לו, אי אפשר לו להישאר ולא להשטף מעט או הרבה בדעות העולם, בלתי אם יאזור את מתניו תמיד בתורתו ועבודתו להוסיף ולעלות, לא ינוח ולא ישקוט, רק אל על יסע. בין אם לעלות יזכה בין לא, בדעות העולם על כל פנים לא ישטוף ובזרמתם לא יתקלקל.
WADING IN WATERS OF CONSENSUS MINDSET: Just as a torrential river runs forth, carrying with it all that lies in its path and penetrating into the deepest recesses as it washes away [anything in its path], so does the flow of consensus mindset in any given generation influence the individual mindset amidst the mentality of the masses. You may not feel it whatsoever. You may even deny it, thinking yourself to be strong enough in your convictions [to overcome it] in the present moment, but you are being influenced nonetheless by the flow. And so shall you be carried along by this crooked flow, sometimes more and sometimes less, [but always with the end result that] you come to think along the lines of these twisted tributaries. [And so must you] stay away from that flow of the river and not be concerned with what [other] people say. But this alone will not protect you, because you cannot completely retreat [from the world]. How can you be sure that your children or other members of your household will not be swept along with that [very] flow? And will they then [not serve as] open floodgates that enable the flow of the floodwaters inside your doors? [Nor is it possible to] abstain from breathing the polluted air so contaminated by consensus mindset? Thoughts and opinions are [simply] more refined [than flood water, but no less toxic] as they seep into your pores and flow up into your nostrils. Nor is it enough merely to remain in place in this torrential river by just standing firm where you are—you must actively swim upstream [contrary to the conformity of public opinion]. If you augment your spiritual practice, even though you may not be successful in swimming completely against the stream, at least you will not be swept along by the flow. You may not be able to soar on high, but, at the very least, you will not be swept away because of the spiritual life and the pristine quality of the spirit that you have actualized. You cannot wade against the waters of conformity unless you aspire to continually augment [the process of] your spiritual maturation. Be relentless in your must swimming upstream—upward and onward against the waters of conformity. There may be a limit to how far you can wade in those waters, but at least you will not be drawn down deeper into the conformity so as to be brought to ruins.
