The Land of Israel - The Land of Israel is the beauty of Israel (Ketubot 113a). It is known how great her virtue is, as is illustrated in the Holy Zohar (Section 3 Page 72) and other holy books — that whomever Hashem will choose He will bring near to Him to behold the pleasantness of Hashem and to contemplate in His temple. And every man must have his eyes and heart [directed] there every day, along the lines of which is written (Psalms 42:3) “my soul thirsts for G-d, the living G-d; O when will I come to appear before G-d!”. And thus one must try with all his strength to affix his residence in the Land of Israel, only he should first open his eyes [and carefully consider the matter] so that he not come to regret his earlier [decision], and so that he not have to turn back and leave. And a safeguard for this is that one should not go except in old age, after his wife has ceased to have “the way of women” and no longer bears Children, and he should not bring the young children with him, whether sons or daughters. And if G-d has enlarged his borders [i.e. given him the means], he may bring a daughter, because she is married off and he is thereby relieved of [supporting] her, but a son he should not bring at all, because the young family multiplies, and he does not know what a day may bring forth. And it is true that the air of the Land of Israel makes one wise, but according to what our own eyes see, a person’s livelihood is difficult in the Land of Israel, and for the most part they are compelled to leave, to the point that they eagerly seize the opportunity for a mission undertaken for a mitzvah, to go out to foreign cities for about ten years or more. And they will live lives of hardship — they themselves, and their wives even more, and great are the dangers suffered by travelers both to the body and soul, as is well known. It is not so with those who live outside the land of Israel — they find enough for their livelihood in their own place, and when an elderly man and woman go [to the Land of Israel] as is proper, they will be able to live there to a good old age, and even if they live a life of hardship, it will be considered a good life in view of the abundance of [spiritual] good.

And it is a great mitzvah for children to try with all their might [money] and all their soul [body] to bring joy to their fathers and mothers by sending them to the Land of Israel, for this is a greater honor than thousands of gold and silver [coins]. And thus one must assist with great strength and determination if one of their brothers wishes to establish their residence in the Land of Israel. How great and how pleasurable is the dwelling of the brothers who help him, for he is their brother in flesh, and it is written (Isaiah 58:7) “do not hide thyself from thine own flesh”, and great is one who causes others to act.

And since many unpleasantries can result from serving as an agent and authorized representative for those traveling to the Land of Israel — for one must litigate with others in one case after another over a dispute that is not his own, and at times he may have to cause the foot of a person who is already somewhat tottering to slip — what need has a person for such trouble? It is true that this is a great mitzvah, but “the wise man’s eyes are in his head”: he should foresee the end of a matter from its beginning, so that he will not later regret what he first undertook, and every prudent man acts with knowledge. If he can excuse himself where there are others available, how good that is. But if not, he should know what he is to do and the path in which he should walk, and he should make his arrangements in such a way that he is likely to gain merit and unlikely to suffer loss. Everything stated above, however, concerns an unrelated person. But a brother is bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh. Therefore, an obligation rests upon his brothers to come to his aid, and they cannot simply declare themselves free of responsibility.

And it is the duty of one whom Hashem has expanded his borders, to not hold back from supporting those going to Israel since the hand of Hashem has bestowed good upon him, both [by supporting them] at the time they move and sending them gifts [of food/money], and a great mitzvah will be accounted to him. And it is true that it appears at first that it is not proper to go from city to city and burden the congregation since they must help their journey to the Land of Israel. And people murmur about them, saying: “Who asked this of them, that they should burden others in order to go to the Land of Israel? If they do not have [the means] of their own, let them not go.” After all, how many wealthy men, and how many rabbis — great Torah scholars of the world — rest honorably outside the land [of Israel]. Is this mitzvah greater than the mitzvah of lulav and the like, among the 613 mitzvot of the Torah? And nevertheless, one who cannot afford it is not obligated, nor does he go begging from door to door in order to fulfill it, for in truth they said (Berakhot 6a): “If a person intended to perform a mitzvah and he did not perform it due to circumstances out of his control, above it is written as if he did it”. And they said (Shabbat 118a) “Make your Sabbath like a weekday rather than become dependent upon others”.

And if he is an afflicted individual, that G-d torments, who has many troubles and pains, it is true that traveling to the Land of Israel is a necessity for him to alleviate his suffering and salve his wounds. But apart from this it appears that the actions [of those who beg to go to the Land of Israel] are improper and there is no room to pity them. But since we see that not everyone does so, rather there is [only] one in every city whose spirit is stirred and, whose soul desires it, and who acts upon it, this is a sign that this [desire to go to the Land of Israel] is from Hashem — that Heaven has granted him this merit. “The feet of a man are responsible for him; to the place where he is demanded they lead him” (Sukkah 53a). And it is proper to assist with all one’s strength to do the will of our Father in Heaven.

And as the Halachic authorities have already written (Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De’ah 251), that what they said regarding the principle of “the poor of your city take precedence” [i.e. should be given charity first], also apples to the poor of the Land of Israel, for they are [also] called the poor of your city in truth. They sit there like roosters in their coops — they are unable to earn a livelihood and there is no one found to take pity on them. Their eyes are turned those who live outside the land [of Israel], from letters to know how well their relatives are, to gifts to sustain their souls and gladden their hears. And great charity and kindness is done by the one who writes to them and who sends them gifts, whether a little or a lot, “every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing that the Lord has given him” (Deutoronomy 16:17), and a great mitzvah will be accounted [to him]. And it is good for one who writes to a different city to write and mention everyone from the other city who live with him in his city, for at times through the letter others [in the other city] will know of the wellness of their relatives and it will gladden the hearts of the afflicted, and he shall receive a blessing from Hashem and from people, and his mitzvah will endure forever.

And primary purpose of going to the Land of Israel is repairing the nefesh, and the ruach returns to G-d who gave it as it was given, and the neshamah praises G-d, as the sanctity of the place and the rest from the troubles of the time are a great help for this matter [of rectifying the nefesh/ruach/neshama]. Therefore, one who merits to go there should be holy and saintly [i.e. abstaining from indulging in worldly pleasures]. And even if Hashem enlarges one’s borders [monetarily], he should not overly indulge in worldly pleasures — rather he should live a life of hardship, conduct himself in the ways of repentance, and [walk] in the ways of piety. And he who is not an expert, should walk at the side of a wise person and learn from him — he will guide him in the paths of righteousness, and righteousness will be the belt around his waist. And he will shrivel and it will be good for him — let him take from the body and add to the soul. And he should be careful with all his might to uphold the commandments applicable to the Land [of Israel] with all his soul and all his might, for this is all the fruit of living in the Land of Israel. And the pure man, the rabbi who wrote the book “Haredim”, has already gathered at the end all of the mitzvot that apply to the Land of Israel.

And it is known that sins in the Land of Israel are punished double the sins outside the land, for it is the palace of Hashem. As such every “master of the soul” [i.e. pious individual] should pity his soul — night like day he should be attached to [Hashem] and to His Torah, without rest. And he shall atone for himself for that which he sinned against the soul (Numbers 6:11) all the days of his life, for it is time to show her favor, and to keep oneself far from idleness. Instead he should be holy, letting the hair grow [similar to a Nazir], for the obligation of [the] man is great. In sum it should be literally like Yom Kippur to them every day that they live on the land. The fear of heaven should hover over them, and great is the power of prayer in that place — the desirable land. And they already have awesome prayers which they pray on behalf of all the people of the Diaspora, and by their mouths we live. And each person should pray for his relatives according to the eloquence of his tongue. And he should pray for the rebuilding of the Temple, for the ingathering of the exiles, and so that G-d, blessed be His name, redeem us with a complete redemption speedily in our days, Amen. And I the poor one have already arranged a prayer, and added it to [my book] Beit Tefilati. And one who lives in the Land of Israel must be constantly joyful in his constant mitzvah, and all the sufferings should be light in his eyes through his love for [the Land].
