315. THE sage has said, Disclose not that to thy friend which thou wouldst conceal from thine enemy.

ואמר כי איש אחד גילה [סוד] לאהבו. אמר לו הבנת? אמר לו הן הבנתי אבל שכחתי:
316. There was a man who, after confiding a secret to his friend, asked him if he understood him. Yes, replied the other, but I have since forgotten it.

ושאל לחכם איזהו הסתרת הסוד? אמר אכחיד המגיד ואסתיר ההגדה:
317. He was asked, How to conceal a secret effectually. Said he, I make my heart its tomb.

ושאלו לחכם האיך הסתרת הסוד? אמר שמתי לבי קברו:
318. The sage was asked the surest means of keeping a secret. His reply was, I chide the narrator and hide the narration.

ואמר החכם לא גילה לי אדם מעולם סוד שהפקדתיו והאשמתיו. אבל האשמתי את לבי מפני שהיה צר יותר להכילו בעת שהפקדתיו בלבו:
319. I never, said the sage, condemned the betrayer of my entrusted secret, but reproached mine own heart, which was too narrow to retain it, and led me to deposit it in his.

ואמר מי שלבו צר. לשונו רחב:
320. A narrow mind has a broad tongue.

ואמר סודך אסירך. ואם תגלהו תהיה אסירו:
321. He used to say, An unrevealed secret is thy captive, but disclosed it is thy captor.

ואמר הסוד [מה שיהי] בין שנים. ובשלשה אינו נסתר:
322. That only is a secret which lies between two; with three it ceases to be so.
