‹›
  1. 1

The following prayer was composed by Rabbi Solomon ben Isaac (Rashi).

  2. 2

Even before the clouds were stretched above,

  3. 3

and the soil was joined together on earth,1Before God created heaven and earth.

  4. 4

    in Your Presence

  5. 5

    seven things were [already] gathered:

  6. 6

    דַּת וָכֵס

    the Torah; the Divine Throne;

  7. 7

    and [Repentance] the remedy

  8. 8

    for rebellious children.

  9. 9

    הוֹד גַּן־עֵדֶן וְעֶלֶק הַבְהָבִים.

    The beauty of Paradise; and the flames of Hell;

  10. 10

and a Place of atonement [the Altar]

  11. 11

    עַל־יְדֵי מַקְרִיבִים:

    by virtue of the offerings [brought thereon];

  12. 12

and the glorious name of the Moshiach

  13. 13

which has been desecrated through our sins.

  14. 14

All these were created two thousand years

  15. 15

before the creation of the inhabited earth.

  16. 16

They are arranged above the firmament,

  17. 17

    appearing with sparkling lustre,

  18. 18

    firmly rooted

  19. 19

before Him Who dwells over the Cherubim.

  20. 20

His throne was placed in the firmament,

  21. 21

    standing firmly—

  22. 22

    the seat of the King

  23. 23

Whose awe is upon all that surround Him.

  24. 24

From His right hand [He gave us the Torah]

  25. 25

a fiery law engraved in writing,

  26. 26

which was set on His knees

  27. 27

    with loving caress.

  28. 28

Situated on the south, was the Garden of Eden,

  29. 29

    on the north

  30. 30

    was the blazing hell.

  31. 31

    Facing east was Jerusalem

  32. 32

    built with hewn stones,

  33. 33

    concealing within it

  34. 34

    מִקְדַּשׁ־אֵל בְּיִשּׁוּבִים:

    the Almighty’s Sanctuary on earth;

  35. 35

set in its center was the Altar,

  36. 36

    that atoned the guilty,

  37. 37

    it lay

  38. 38

on the hewn, foundation stone.2From which God shaped the world.

  39. 39

    The name of Yinon [Moshiach]

  40. 40

    was engraved on it,

  41. 41

    also the ineffable four-letter Name

  42. 42

    was etched in letters.

  43. 43

    There in the center

  44. 44

before Him Who blesses His people with rain

  45. 45

repentance is joined [with the other six objects],

  46. 46

it is the remedy for the sick and grieved.3Because of their sins and transgressions.

  47. 47

It is ready to cleanse the filth,

  48. 48

    and to provide clean garments,

  49. 49

and to pour good [fragrant] oil

  50. 50

on the heads of the penitent.

  51. 51

    Therefore, we come before You,

  52. 52

young and old, [pleading with You]

  53. 53

to cleanse us from the stench [of sin],

  54. 54

and cast away the record of our iniquity.

  55. 55

    With prayer, they approach You

  56. 56

    בָּנִים־שׁוֹבָבִים.

    Your rebellious children;

  57. 57

    they seek You every day

  58. 58

    with words of prayer.

  59. 59

    Let our words be considered

  60. 60

as the burning of sacrificial blood and fat,

  61. 61

and accept the murmuring of our lips

  62. 62

as the sacrificial pieces of bullocks and lambs.

  63. 63

Cause our sins to sink into the earth.

  64. 64

there where water drips.4Causing the earth to be soft and absorbent.

  65. 65

    Bring us near to You,

  66. 66

under the wings of Your abundant mercy.

  67. 67

    For in Your abundant mercy

  68. 68

    we trust,

  69. 69

and on Your righteousness, we rely,

  70. 70

and for Your pardon, we hope,

  71. 71

and for Your deliverance, we yearn.

  72. 72

    You are a King

  73. 73

Who loves righteousness from of old,

  74. 74

Who passes over the iniquities of His people,

  75. 75

and removes the sins of those who fear Him.

  76. 76

You made a covenant with the Patriarchs,

  77. 77

    and will keep [Your] oath

  78. 78

    with their descendants.

  79. 79

    You are He Who descended

  80. 80

in the cloud of Your glory, on Mount Sinai,

  81. 81

and disclosed the ways of Your goodness

  82. 82

    to Moses, Your servant.

  83. 83

    The ways of Your kindliness,

  84. 84

    גִּלִּיתָ לוֹ,

    You revealed to him;

  85. 85

and You made known to him

  86. 86

that You are Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  87. 87

Slow to anger, Abounding in kindness,

  88. 88

    and full of beneficence,

  89. 89

    guiding the entire world

  90. 90

    with the quality of mercy.

  91. 91

    And so it is written:

  92. 92

    “And He said:

  93. 93

    ‘I will cause to pass

  94. 94

    all My goodness before you,

  95. 95

and I will proclaim the Name, Adonoy

  96. 96

    לְפָנֶיךָ.

    in your presence;

  97. 97

    I will be gracious

  98. 98

to whom I will be gracious,

  99. 99

    and I will be compassionate

  100. 100

to whom I will be compassionate.’”

  101. 101

You are Almighty, Slow to Anger,

  102. 102

Lord of Mercy, You are called,

  103. 103

and the way of repentance, You have taught us.

  104. 104

The greatness of Your mercy and kindliness,

  105. 105

remember this day and every day

  106. 106

for the descendants of Your loved ones.

  107. 107

    Turn to us with compassion

  108. 108

for You are the Lord of Mercy.

  109. 109

    With supplication and prayer

  110. 110

    we approach Your Presence,

  111. 111

    as You made known

  112. 112

to [Moses,] the modest one of old.

  113. 113

    From Your fierce anger turn,

  114. 114

as it is written in Your Torah.

  115. 115

In the shadow of Your wings,

  116. 116

may we be sheltered and lodged,

  117. 117

as on the day [of which it is said:]

  118. 118

“When Adonoy descended in the cloud.”

  119. 119

    Remove [our] transgression,

  120. 120

    and blot out [our] iniquity,

  121. 121

as on the day [of which it is said:]

  122. 122

“And He stood with him there.”

  123. 123

    Give ear to our cry

  124. 124

    and listen to our speech,

  125. 125

as on the day [of which it is said:]

  126. 126

“And He proclaimed the Name, Adonoy”

  127. 127

    And there it is said:

  128. 128

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  129. 129

“And Adonoy passed before him [Moses]

  130. 130

    and proclaimed:

  131. 131

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  132. 132

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  133. 133

    Slow to Anger,

  134. 134

and Abundant in Kindness and Truth.

  135. 135

    Keeper of kindness

  136. 136

    for thousands of generations,

  137. 137

    Endurer of iniquity and transgression,

  138. 138

    and sin,

  139. 139

And Acquitter of those who repent.”

  140. 140

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  141. 141

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  142. 142

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  143. 143

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  144. 144

    For You, my Master,

  145. 145

    are good and forgiving,

  146. 146

    and abounding in kindness

  147. 147

to all who call upon You.

  148. 148

Seek Adonoy while He may be found,

  149. 149

call upon Him while He is near.

  150. 150

“Return to Me, and I will return to you,”

  151. 151

    says Adonoy of hosts.

  152. 152

    He who knows shall return,

  153. 153

    and God will relent

  154. 154

and turn from His fierce anger,

  155. 155

    and not destroy

  156. 156

He who knows shall return and repent,

  157. 157

and leave a blessing after him.

  158. 158

Rend your hearts, not [merely] your clothes,

  159. 159

and return to Adonoy, your God.

  160. 160

For He is gracious and merciful,

  161. 161

slow to anger and abundant in kindness,

  162. 162

    and relenting of evil.

  163. 163

As a father has compassion on his children

  164. 164

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  165. 165

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  166. 166

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  167. 167

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  168. 168

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  169. 169

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  170. 170

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  171. 171

    Adonoy, deliver us!

  172. 172

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  173. 173

The Chazzan repeats after the congregation:

  174. 174

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  175. 175

    in accordance with the greatness

  176. 176

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  177. 177

and as You forgave this people

  178. 178

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  179. 179

    And there it is said:

  180. 180

    The Congregation says:

  181. 181

    “And Adonoy said,

  182. 182

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  183. 183

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  184. 184

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  185. 185

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  186. 186

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  187. 187

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  188. 188

but because of Your great mercy.

  189. 189

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  190. 190

My Master, listen and take action,

  191. 191

    do not delay!

  192. 192

    For Your sake, my God,

  193. 193

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  194. 194

over Your city and over Your people.
