This prayer, too, was composed by R’ Saadyah Gaon.

וְעַתָּה יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ,

And now Adonoy, our God,

אַחֲרֵי שׁוּבֵנוּ נִחַמְנוּ.

after we have repented, we regret [our sins],

וְאַחֲרֵי הִוָּדְעֵנוּ,

and after realizing [our guilt],

סָפַקְנוּ עַל־יָרֵךְ:

we struck ourselves on the thigh.

בֹּשְׁנוּ וְגַם נִכְלַמְנוּ,

We are ashamed, even disgraced,

כִּי נָשָׂאנוּ חֶרְפַּת נְעוּרֵינוּ.

for we also bear the shame of our youth.¹Jeremiah 31:18.

וְעַל־זֹאת

Because of this

נִשָּׂא בְשָרֵנוּ בְשִׁנֵּינוּ,

we take our flesh in our teeth,²We bite ourselves.

וְנַפְשֵׁנוּ נָשִׂים בְּכַפֵּנוּ.

and put our life in our hands.³Job 13:14.

וּבַמֶּה נְקַדְּמָה פָנֶיךָ

How shall we approach You,

יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ.

Adonoy, our God,

וּבַמֶּה נִכַּף לְךָ

and how shall we bow unto You,

אֱלֹהֵי מָרוֹם.

exalted God?⁴Micah 6:6.

וּבַמֶּה תִּתְרַצֶּה,

How will You be reconciled to us

וּתְכַפֵּר לָנוּ עַל־כָּל־חַטֹּאתֵנוּ,

and atone all our sins,

אֲשֶׁר חָלְפוּ וְעָבְרוּ,

which have passed by and gone

כַּמַּיִם הַמֻּגָּרִים אַרְצָה,

like water spilt on the ground,

אֲשֶׁר לֹא יֵאָסֵפוּ:

which cannot be gathered up again?⁵II Samuel 14:14.

אִם בִּתְשׁוּבָה וּוִדּוּי

If through repentance and confession

תִּתְּרַצֶּה,

You will be reconciled to us,

הִנְּנוּ שָׁבִים וּמִתְוַדִּים

behold we repent and confess

לְפָנֶיךָ יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ.

before You Adonoy, our God:

חָטָאנוּ וּפָשַׁעְנוּ

“We have sinned and transgressed,

וְיָשָׁר הֶעֱוִינוּ,

and that which is straight, we distorted,

וְלֹא־שָׁוָה לָנוּ:

and it has not profited us.”

וְאִם בִּתְפִלָּה וּבְתַחֲנוּנִים

And if through prayer and supplication

תִּמְחָל,

You will forgive us,

הִנְּנוּ מַפִּילִים תַּחֲנוּנֵינוּ לְפָנֶיךָ,

behold we offer our supplication before You;

כְּעֵינֵי עֲבָדִים

“As the eyes of servants [look]

אֶל־יַד אֲדוֹנֵיהֶם,

toward the hand of their master,

וּכְעֵינֵי שִׁפְחָה

as the eyes of a maiden [look]

אֶל־יַד גְּבִרְתָּהּ,

toward the hand of her mistress;

כֵּן עֵינֵינוּ נְשׂוּאוֹת אֵלֶיךָ:

so our eyes are lifted to You.”⁶Psalms 123:2.

וְאִם בִּבְכִי וּזְעָקָה

And if through weeping and wailing

תִּסְלַח,

You will pardon us,

הִנֵּה בַמִּסְתָּרִים תִּבְכֶּה נַפְשֵׁנוּ

behold, our soul weeps in secret

מִפְּנֵי חַטֹּאתֵינוּ,

because of our sins,

וּבַחֲדָרִים תֶּאֱנַח רוּחֵנוּ

and our spirit groans within us

עַל רֹב פְּשָׁעֵינוּ:

over the multitude of our transgressions.

וְאִם בְּשֶׁבֶר־רוּחַ

And if through a broken spirit,

תְּכַפֵּר,

You will atone us,

הִנֵּה נִשְׁבַּר לִבֵּנוּ בְּקִרְבֵּנוּ,

behold our heart is broken within us,

וְנִדְכָּאָה רוּחֵנוּ,

and our spirit is crushed

מִן הַצָּרוֹת וּמִן הַתְּלָאוֹת,

by the troubles and travails

אֲשֶׁר עָבְרוּ עָלֵינוּ,

which have passed over us,

עַד אֲשֶׁר לֹא־נוֹתָר

until there is nothing left

מְתוֹם בִּבְשָׂרֵנוּ.

whole in our flesh.

לוּלֵי רַחֲמֶיךָ וַחֲסָדֶיךָ,

Were it not for Your mercy and kindness,

אָז אָבַדְנוּ

we would have perished

בַּעֲוֹנֵינוּ:

because of our iniquities.

אָשַׁמְנוּ

We have trespassed

מִכָּל־עָם,

more than any other people,

בֹּשְׁנוּ

we are more ashamed

מִכָּל־דּוֹר.

than any other generation;

גָּלָה מִמֶּנּוּ מָשׂוֹשׂ,

happiness has departed from us,

דָּוֶה לִבֵּנוּ בַּחֲטָאֵינוּ.

our hearts are miserable with our sins;

הֻחְבַּל אִוּוּיֵנוּ,

[the place of] our desire has been devastated,

וְנִפְרַע פְּאֵרֵנוּ.

[the place of] our glory has been humiliated,

זְבוּל בֵּית־מִקְדָּשֵׁנוּ,

the abode of our Holy Temple

חָרַב בַּעֲוֹנֵינוּ.

has been destroyed because of our iniquities;

טִירָתֵנוּ הָיְתָה לְשַׁמָּה,

our Palace has become a desolation,

יֹפִי אַדְמָתֵנוּ לְזָרִים,

our beautiful land belongs to strangers,

כֹּחֵנוּ לְנָכְרִים:

our strength [wealth] to foreigners.

וַעֲדַיִן לֹא שַׁבְנוּ מִטָּעוּתֵנוּ.

Still, we have not repented our errors,

וְהֵאֵיךְ נָעִיז פָּנֵינוּ

so how can we be so insolent

וְנַקְשֶׁה עָרְפֵּנוּ.

and obstinate

לוֹמַר לְפָנֶיךָ

as to say before You,

יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵינוּ.

“Adonoy, our God, and God of our fathers,

צַדִּיקִים אֲנַחְנוּ וְלֹא חָטָאנוּ.

we are righteous and have not sinned.”

אֲבָל אֲנַחְנוּ וַאֲבוֹתֵינוּ חָטָאנוּ:

But indeed we and our fathers have sinned:

אָשַֽׁמְנוּ. בָּגַֽדְנוּ. גָּזַֽלְנוּ. דִּבַּֽרְנוּ דֹּֽפִי. הֶעֱוִֽינוּ. וְהִרְשַֽׁעְנוּ. זַֽדְנוּ. חָמַֽסְנוּ. טָפַֽלְנוּ שֶֽׁקֶר. יָעַֽצְנוּ רָע. כִּזַּֽבְנוּ. לַֽצְנוּ. מָרַֽדְנוּ. נִאַֽצְנוּ. סָרַֽרְנוּ. עָוִֽינוּ. פָּשַֽׁעְנוּ. צָרַֽרְנוּ. קִשִּֽׁינוּ עֹֽרֶף. רָשַֽׁעְנוּ. שִׁחַֽתְנוּ. תִּעַֽבְנוּ. תָּעִֽינוּ. תִּעְתָּֽעְנוּ: סַֽרְנוּ מִמִּצְוֹתֶֽיךָ וּמִמִּשְׁפָּטֶֽיךָ הַטּוֹבִים וְלֹא שָֽׁוָה לָֽנוּ. וְאַתָּה צַדִּיק עַל כָּל הַבָּא עָלֵֽינוּ. כִּי אֱמֶת עָשִֽׂיתָ וַאֲנַֽחְנוּ הִרְשָֽׁעְנוּ:

וְעַתָּה יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ

And now Adonoy, our God,

אִם עָשִׂינוּ כְּאִוַּלְתֵּנוּ.

if we did like our foolishness,

עֲשֵׂה אַתָּה כְּאֻמָּנוּתֶךָ וּסְלַח.

You do according to Your trait and forgive

כִּי תְמִים דֵּעִים אָתָּה.

because You are perfect and complete.

אִם שִׁלַּמְנוּ רָעָה תַּחַת טוֹבָה.

If we repaid evil in exchange for good

גָּמַלְנוּ טוֹב וְלֹא רָע.

still grant us good and not evil;

כִּי יֶתֶר מֵרֵעֵהוּ צַדִּיק.

because even a righteous person forgives

וְכָל שֶׁכֵּן הַבּוֹרֵא

and certainly the Creator should do this.

וְאִם הִרְבִּינוּ לִפְשֹׁעַ.

If we transgressed so extensively,

אַתָּה הוּא רַב חֶסֶד

You are capable of excessive kindness

וּמַרְבֶּה לִסְלֹחַ.

and can forgive extensively

אֲשֶׁר צִדְקוֹתֶיךָ וַחֲסָדֶיךָ

since Your righteousness and kindness

רַבּוּ מֵהַרְרֵי אֵל

are greater than high and mighty mountains,

וְעָמְקוּ מִתְּהוֹם רַבָּה.

and more profound than the greatest depths.

כִּסָּה שָׁמַיִם הוֹדְךָ

Your glory covers the heavens

וּתְהִלָּתְךָ מָלְאָה הָאָרֶץ.

and Your praise fills the earth.

יְהֹוָה שָׁמַעְנוּ שִׁמְעֲךָ.

Adonoy, we heard Your reputation—

כִּי בְאַחַת הַמִּדּוֹת

that with one of Your character traits

תִּסְלַח לַאֲשֶׁר חָטְאוּ לָךְ

You forgive those who sinned against You

וְאַף כִּי בְכֻלָּם.

and even all of those who sinned.

סְלַח־נָא לַעֲווֹנֵינוּ וּלְחַטְּאֹתֵינוּ

Forgive our intentional and unintentional sins

וּלְכָל חַטֹּאת וַעֲוֹנוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל

and all the sins and iniquities of Israel,

וְכַבְּסֵנוּ מֵעֲווֹנֵינוּ

and cleanse us from our iniquity

וּמֵחַטֹּאתֵינוּ טַהֲרֵנוּ.

and purify us from our sins.

וְאַל תִּקְצֹף עָלֵינוּ עַד מְאֹד.

Don’t be excessively angry at us

וְאַל לָעַד תִּזְכֹּר עָווֹן.

and don’t remember our iniquity forever,

וְאַתָּה רַב לִסְלֹחַ:

since You have the vast capacity to forgive.

וְאַתָּה יְהֹוָה

And You, Adonoy,

חָשַׁבְתָּ לְצָרֵף סִיגֵנוּ,

intended to rid us of our refuse,

וּלְהָסִיר בְדִילֵנוּ

and to remove our unworthiness¹Lit. tin.

וְלִשְׁבֹּר אֶת־לִבֵּנוּ הַזּוֹנֶה,

and break our straying heart,

וּלְהָתֵם טֻמְאָתֵנוּ מִמֶּנּוּ,

and destroy our defilement from within us.

עַל־כֵּן הִגְלִיתָנוּ

Therefore, You exiled us

וּבַגּוֹיִם זֵרִיתָנוּ:

and scattered us among the nations.

הִנֵּה בִּשְׁאוֹן הַמַּלְכֻיּוֹת

Behold, in the pandemonium of kingdoms

הֻצְלַלְנוּ,

we drowned

וּכְהִתּוּךְ כֶּסֶף

and like the smelting of silver

בְּתוֹך כּוּר נִתָּכְנוּ,

in a vat we were melted

וְלֹא מִקֹּצֶר יָדְךָ

and it was not because of Your inability

לֹא־הוֹשַׁעְתָּנוּ,

that You did not save us,

וְלֹא מִכֹּבֶד אָזְנְךָ

nor because of deafness in Your ears

לֹא־שָׁמַעְתָּ תְּפִלָּתֵנוּ,

that You did not hear our prayers.

כִּי הִבְדִּילוּ עֲוֹנוֹתֵינוּ

Rather our sins separated

בֵּינֵינוּ וּבֵין יְשׁוּעָתֶךָ.

us from Your deliverance.

לְךָ יְהֹוָה הַצְּדָקָה,

Righteousness is Yours, Adonoy

וְלָנוּ בֹּשֶׁת הַפָּנִים.

while the shame is ours.

לַיהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ

To Adonoy, our God,

הָרַחֲמִים וְהַסְּלִיחוֹת,

is mercy and forgiveness

כִּי מָרַדְנוּ בוֹ.

because we have rebelled against Him

וּלְךָ אֲדֹנָי הַחֶסֶד,

and to You, God, is only kindness

כִּי אַתָּה תְּשַׁלֵּם

because You pay [reward]

לְאִישׁ כְּמַעֲשֵׂהוּ:

a person according to his deeds.

וְאַתָּה יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ,

And You, Adonoy, our God,

גּוֹאֵל יִשְׂרָאֵל וּקְדוֹשׁוֹ.

Redeemer of Israel and its Holy One,

הַלְעוֹלָם תֶּאֱנַף בָּנוּ,

will You eternally be angry at us?

תִּמְשֹׁךְ אַפְּךָ לְדֹר וָדֹר,

Will Your anger endure for all generations?

חָלִילָה.

God forbid!

הַלְעוֹלָם תִּזְנַח,

Will You forsake forever

וְלֹא־תֹסִיף לִרְצוֹת עוֹד,

and not forgive again?

חָלִילָה.

God forbid!

כִּי לֹא אָפְסוּ לָנֶצַח

Because forever there will not cease

חֲסָדֶיךָ,

Your performance of kindness

וְלֹא כָלוּ רַחֲמֶיךָ,

and Your mercy will not stop

כִּי הֵמָה חֲדָשִׁים לַבְּקָרִים,

since this trait is renewed daily

יָחִילוּ בְּכָל־עֵת

and is created at all times

וּבְכָל רֶגַע:

and every moment.

וּלְמַעַן שִׁמְךָ יְהֹוָה,

For the sake of Your Name, Adonoy

עֲשֵׂה עִמָּנוּ,

perform with us (your kindness and forgive us)

כִּי הִיא תְהִלָּתֶיךָ.

because this is Your praise

כִּי נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֵינוּ,

and because Your Name is called upon us,

יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל.

Adonoy, God of Israel;

וּלְמַעַן בְּרִית

and for the sake of the covenant,

אֲבוֹתֵינוּ, אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקֹב,

with our ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,

אֲשֶׁר כָּרַתָּ לָהֶם,

that You made with them;

וְאֶת הַשְּׁבוּעָה

and the oath

אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּעְתָּ לָהֶם, זְכוֹר.

that You swore to them, remember.

וּלְמַעַן תּוֹרָתֶךָ

And for the sake of Your Torah

וּלְמַעַן הַקְּדוֹשִׁים וְלוֹמְדֶיהָ

and the holy ones who study it,

כִּי נִמְעֲטוּ וְשַׁחוּ

for they have been diminished and subdued.

וְהִבְטַחְתָּנוּ עַל אוֹדוֹתֶיהָ

And You have promised us in its regard

כִּי לֹא תִשָׁכַח עֵדוּת

that the Law will never be forgotten

מִפִּי זַרְעוֹ.

from his seed;

וּדְבָרַי אֲשֶׁר־שַׂמְתִּי בְּפִיהֶם

“And My words that I placed in their mouths

לֹא־יָמוּשׁוּ.

will never cease”;

וּלְמַעַן עַמְּךָ וְנַחֲלָתְךָ,

and for the sake of Your nation and inheritance

אֲשֶׁר־נִשְׁאֲרוּ מְעַט מֵהַרְבֵּה,

of which only a few remain from many

כַּתֹּרֶן בְּרֹאשׁ הָהָר,

as a rod placed on a mountain top

וְכַנֵּס עַל הַגִּבְעָה:

or a banner on a hill.

וּלְמַעַן יְרוּשָׁלַיִם עִיר קָדְשֶׁךָ,

For the sake of Jerusalem, Your holy city,

אֲשֶׁר הָיְתָה מִדְבַּר שְׁמָמָה,

that became a desolate wilderness

וְיָצְאָה מִמֶּנָּהּ כָּל־הֲדָרָהּ,

and all its glory was taken from it;

וּלְמַעַן

and for the sake

בֵּית חַיֵּינוּ וְתִפְאַרְתֵּנוּ,

of our house of life and beauty

אֲשֶׁר הִלְלוּךָ אֲבוֹתֵינוּ

that for which our ancestors praised You

אֲשֶׁר הָיָה לִשְׂרֵפַת אֵשׁ:

and that was consumed by fire,

וְכָל מַחֲמַדֵּינוּ הָיוּ לְחָרְבָּה.

and all of its treasures destroyed.

וּלְמַעַן הֲרוּגִים

For the sake of those who were killed

עַל שֵׁם קָדְשֶׁךָ.

[because they upheld] Your holy Name

וּלְמַעַן טְבוּחִים

and for those who were slaughtered

עַל יִחוּדֶךָ.

[because they expounded] Your singularity.

וּלְמַעַן תּוֹרָתְךָ הַקְּדוֹשָׁה

For the sake of Your holy Torah

הַשְּׂרוּפָה בָאֵש,

that was burned in fire

וּנְתוּנָה לְמִרְמָס

and cast to be trodden upon

לְכָל עוֹבְרֵי דֶרֶךְ.

by all passers-by.

הַעַל אֵלֶה

In view of all these tragedies

תִתְאַפַּק יְהֹוָה

will [You] Adonoy, restrain Yourself,

וְתֶחֱשֶׁה וּתְעַנֵּנוּ

therefore hasten to answer us

עַד מְאֹד:

to the greatest extent.

וְהִנֵּה כָּל־הַגּוֹיִם

Behold all of the nations

יוֹשְׁבִים שְׁלֵוִים וּשְׁקֵטִים.

dwell in tranquility without turmoil

וְאֶבְיוֹנֵי עַמְּךָ

whereas the poor of Your people,

דְווּיִים סְחוּפִים וּמְדֻלְדָּלִים.

are tormented and denigrated and unsettled

וּבְדִלְדּוּלָם הֵם מְבַקְּשִׁים פָּנֶיךָ.

and in their turmoil they seek You

וּמַפִּילִים תְּחִנָּתָם

and extend their supplication

מוּל אֲרוֹן בְּרִיתֶךָ.

opposite the Ark of Your covenant.

יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵי הַצְּבָאוֹת

Adonoy, the God of Hosts,

עַד־מָתַי

until when will You continue

לֹא תְרַחֵם אֶת יְרוּשָׁלַיִם

not to have mercy on Jerusalem

וְאֶת־עָרֵי יְהוּדָה

and the cities of Judah

אֲשֶׁר זָעַמְתָּ

against whom You were angered

זֶה כַּמֶּה שָׁנִים.

for so many years,

וּרְאֵה אֶת עַמְּךָ

and see Your nation

מוֹרֶה מְאֹד.

in great fear.

וְאֶפֶס עָצוּר וְעָזוּב.

There is no one to unite and help them

וְאֵין עוֹזֵר לְיִשְׂרָאֵל.

and there is no savior for Israel.

פָּנִינוּ לִימִין

We have turned to the right

וְאֵין עוֹזֵר.

and there is no savior;

לִשְׁמֹאל וְאֵין תּוֹמֵךְ

to the left and there is no support,

וַאֲנַחְנוּ

and for us,

אֵין לָנוּ עַל מִי לְהִשָּׁעֵן

we can rely on no one

כִּי אִם עָלֶיךָ

except upon You

אָבִינוּ שֶׁבַּשָּׁמַיִם.

our Father in heaven.

הִנֵּה הָעֵת וְהָעוֹנֶה

Now is the time and the opportunity

יָאֲתָה לְךָ לְהוֹשִׁיעַ

that it behooves You to help

וּלְהִוָּדַע

and to promulgate

עוֹז רַחֲמֶיךָ

the intensity of Your mercy

אֲשֶׁר מֵעוֹלָם

that always existed

כִּי רַבּוּ מְאֹד:

for it [Your mercy] is very great.

וּכְשֶׁחָטְאוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּמִּדְבָּר

When Israel sinned in the desert,

עָמַד מֹשֶׁה רַבֵּנוּ

Moses, our teacher stood

בִּתְפִלָּה לְפָנֶיךָ

and prayed before You,

וּבִקֵּשׁ רַחֲמִים

and beseeched You for mercy

עַל עַמְּךָ בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל.

upon Your nation, Israel,

וְכָךְ אָמַר בִּתְפִלָּתוֹ.

and said the following in his prayer:

מַלְכִּי וֵאלֹהָי.

“My King and my God,

סְלַח־נָא לַעֲוֹן הָעָם הַזֶּה

please forgive the sin of this people

כְּגֹדֶל חַסְדֶּךָ

with the immensity of Your kindness,

וְכַאֲשֶׁר נָשָׂאתָ לָעָם הַזֶּה

just as You forgave this nation

מִמִּצְרַיִם וְעַד הֵנָּה.

from Egypt until the present time.

וְאַתָּה הֲשֵׁבוֹתָ־לוֹ

And You responded to him

כְּדַרְכֵי טוּבְךָ.

in your manner of goodness

וְדִבַּרְתָּ וְאָמַרְתָּ־לוֹ

and You spoke and said to him,

סָלַחְתִּי כִּדְבָרֶךָ.

“I forgive [them] as you ask.”

וַאֲנַחְנוּ בֹּשְׁנוּ בְּמַעֲשֵׂינוּ

We are ashamed of our actions

וְנִכְלַמְנוּ בַּעֲוֹנֵינוּ

and we are disgraced with our sins

וְהֻשְׁחֲרוּ פָּנֵינוּ

and our faces are blackened

מִפְּנֵי חַטֹּאתֵינוּ.

from our sins.

וְנִכְפְּפָה קוֹמָתֵנוּ

Our statures are bent

מִפְּנֵי אַשְׁמָתֵינוּ

because of our guilt

וְאֵין לָנוּ פֶּה לְהָשִׁיב

and we have no excuse to offer

וְלֹא מֵצַח לְהָרִים רֹאשׁ:

nor audacity to raise our heads.

לְעֵינֵינוּ עָשְׁקוּ עֲמָלֵנוּ, מְמֻשָּׁךְ וּמְמוֹרָט מִמֶּנּוּ. נָתְנוּ עֻלָּם עָלֵינוּ, סָבַלְנוּ עַל־שִׁכְמֵנוּ. עֲבָדִים מָשְׁלוּ בָנוּ, פּוֹרֵק אֵין מִיָּדָם. צָרוֹת רַבּוֹת סְבָבוּנוּ, קְרָאנוּךָ יְהוָֹה אֱלֹהֵינוּ. רָחַקְתָּ מִמֶּנּוּ בַּעֲוֹנֵינוּ, שַׁבְנוּ מֵאַחֲרֶיךָ, תָּעִינוּ וְאָבָדְנוּ. וַעֲדַיִן לֹא שַׁבְנוּ מִטָּעוּתֵנוּ. וְהֵאֵיךְ נָעִיז פָּנֵינוּ וְנַקְשֶׁה עָרְפֵּנוּ. לוֹמַר לְפָנֶיךָ יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵינוּ. צַדִּיקִים אֲנַחְנוּ וְלֹא חָטָאנוּ. אֲבָל אֲנַחְנוּ וַאֲבוֹתֵינוּ חָטָאנוּ:
