Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Erev Rosh Hashana, Chapter 26

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer too was composed by R’ Saadyah Gaon.

  2. 2

    We have forgotten Your goodness,

  3. 3

    וְנָשִׁינוּ אֶת־רֹב חֲסָדֶיךָ.

    and been mindless of Your great kindnesses;

  4. 4

we have rebelled against Your word,

  5. 5

and have turned away from Your laws.

  6. 6

We have indulged in the vanities of this world,

  7. 7

and to men of arrogance and deceit

  8. 8

    we have turned.

  9. 9

    We have been very foolish,

  10. 10

we have loved evil more than good,

  11. 11

    and falsehood

  12. 12

    rather than speaking righteousness,

  13. 13

we have sought impurity rather than purity,

  14. 14

    וְשִׁקּוּץ תַּחַת זְכוּת.

    and the loathsome rather than the clean;

  15. 15

    we have exchanged

  16. 16

the permanent [world] for the transitory.

  17. 17

Day by day we rise early to sin,

  18. 18

    until

  19. 19

our iniquities have mounted above our heads,

  20. 20

and are more numerous than our hairs,

  21. 21

    and more powerful

  22. 22

than the words of our mouth,

  23. 23

and exceeded the steps of our feet,

  24. 24

and surpassed the breathing of our nostrils.

  25. 25

We have sunk into muddy depths,

  26. 26

    וְאֵין מָעֳמֳד.

    and there is no foothold;

  27. 27

we have come into deep waters,

  28. 28

and a whirlpool has swept us away.1Psalms 69:3.

  29. 29

Not You Adonoy, our God, have we harmed,

  30. 30

    but [only] ourselves,

  31. 31

    not You have we irritated

  32. 32

    כִּי אִם אוֹתָנוּ.

    but [only] ourselves;

  33. 33

    for when man sins,

  34. 34

what effect has it on You?

  35. 35

    If his transgressions are numerous,

  36. 36

what does it do to You?

  37. 37

But woe to the sons of man

  38. 38

    who sin against You,

  39. 39

    and woe to their souls,

  40. 40

for they bring evil upon themselves.

  41. 41

Our God, we are too ashamed and disgraced,

  42. 42

to lift our faces to You, our God;2Ezra 9:6.

  43. 43

for we are like a repulsive vessel,

  44. 44

thus are we disgraced in our own eyes.

  45. 45

As a man immersed in a [muddy] ditch

  46. 46

    and soils his clothing;3Job 9:31.

  47. 47

and as we were conceived in iniquity,

  48. 48

so the shame of our faces have covered us.4Psalms 44:16.
