‹›
  1. 1

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

Then on Mount Mor1Poetic form of Moriah.

  4. 4

the mute dove2Isaac who accepted his role silently. rejoiced

  5. 5

when Ethan3Literally “giant”—a reference to Abraham. took him

  6. 6

    as a burnt whole offering

  7. 7

    the proud One tested him,

  8. 8

    “Take this lad

  9. 9

as a raise-offering to Adonoy, sanctified.”

  10. 10

“Like the law for the basket,4The basket of first fruits; see Devorim 26:4.

  11. 11

    place him before Me

  12. 12

    your son here,

  13. 13

    לְאֶשְׁכָּר סְפָחֵהוּ.

    bring him as a bread offering;

  14. 14

I have chosen him, come anoint him

  15. 15

with the oil of sanctified anointment.”

  16. 16

    The pure one, upon hearing,

  17. 17

    לִבּוֹ לֹא דָאַב.

    did not worry;

  18. 18

the will of His Rock was all he desired

  19. 19

    united, both father and son

  20. 20

    bowed to Adonoy

  21. 21

    in the splendor of holiness.

  22. 22

He prepared wood intending to kindle it.

  23. 23

The only son wondered and hoped

  24. 24

saying, “Where is the lamb of offering

  25. 25

    sanctified sacred to Adonoy?”

  26. 26

“The One Above will show the lamb,”

  27. 27

    he replied,

  28. 28

“to satisfy, make happy the mother’s soul.5Sarah would rejoice if God would choose an animal and Isaac would return.

  29. 29

He Who sees the hidden, my son,

  30. 30

    will heed your prayer,

  31. 31

He’ll send you aid from the sanctified place.”

  32. 32

“Stop, please, father and bind the sacrifice

  33. 33

lest I move in fear of the blade.

  34. 34

Tie me down lest I desecrate the offering

  35. 35

    and spoil its sanctity.”

  36. 36

Kofer Eshkol6An allusion to Isaac. See Shir HaShirim Raba 1:14. burst into tears

  37. 37

when he thought of his father

  38. 38

    bereft of his son.

  39. 39

He grabbed the knife to perform

  40. 40

    the entire sanctified service.

  41. 41

    Angels screamed up in Heaven,

  42. 42

    “The mute dove’s slaughter,

  43. 43

    who can watch?”

  44. 44

One to the other declared, “Don’t keep silent,

  45. 45

    raise your hands in sanctity.”

  46. 46

The One Above gazed at binder and bound,

  47. 47

the bound lamb and the burning flame.

  48. 48

    The Tester of puremindedness

  49. 49

    recalled the pitied

  50. 50

    and His voice was heard

  51. 51

    entering the Sanctum.

  52. 52

Spoke the “advocate”7The angel in the Name of God. as he took the knife,

  53. 53

“Spare your only one from going to death.

  54. 54

    This is written before me,

  55. 55

    clearly inscribed,

  56. 56

    inscribed in sanctified etching.

  57. 57

“I know the beautiful integrity of your way.

  58. 58

    Rejoice and take a ram

  59. 59

instead of the buck.8An allusion to Isaac. See above.

  60. 60

    I’ve prepared a substitute

  61. 61

for the Eshkol Hakofer6An allusion to Isaac. See Shir HaShirim Raba 1:14.

  62. 62

    and he and his replacement

  63. 63

    will be sanctified.”

  64. 64

    גָּמוּל נִמְלַט מֵאֶבַח הַנִשְׁחַז.

    The youngster was saved from the sharp blade;

  65. 65

    from outstretched throat

  66. 66

    his blood did not flow.

  67. 67

His right grasped the gripped ram,

  68. 68

to sanctify it holy to Adonoy.

  69. 69

    Merciful One!

  70. 70

You provided him a peaceful ending.

  71. 71

    Till this day You recall

  72. 72

    his covenant for his seed.

  73. 73

For the rest of the remnant,

  74. 74

what is left of his remainder,

  75. 75

let there be a haven in sanctity.

  76. 76

    Almighty! King!

  77. 77

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  78. 78

    governs with kindness

  79. 79

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  80. 80

He removes their sins one by one,

  81. 81

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  82. 82

    and pardon to transgressors.

  83. 83

    Acting righteously

  84. 84

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  85. 85

    not according to their wickedness

  86. 86

    does He repay them.

  87. 87

    Almighty!

  88. 88

    You instructed us to recite

  89. 89

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  90. 90

    remember unto us this day

  91. 91

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  92. 92

    as You made them known

  93. 93

to the humble Moses of old,

  94. 94

    as it is written,

  95. 95

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  96. 96

    and stood with him there,

  97. 97

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  98. 98

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  99. 99

    וַיַּֽעֲבֹר יְהֹוָה עַל פָּנָיו

    And Adonoy passed before him [Moses];

  100. 100

    and proclaimed:

  101. 101

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  102. 102

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  103. 103

    Slow to Anger,

  104. 104

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  105. 105

    Keeper of kindness

  106. 106

    for thousands of generations,

  107. 107

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  108. 108

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  109. 109

and Acquitter of those who repent.”

  110. 110

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  111. 111

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  112. 112

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  114. 114

    “For You, my Master,

  115. 115

    are good and forgiving,

  116. 116

    and abounding in kindness

  117. 117

to all who call upon You.”
