Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Fourth Day of the Ten Days of Penitence, Chapter 4

‹›
  1. 1

This prayer was composed by Rabbenu Gershom, the “Light of the Exile.”

  2. 2

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

    Truly we have sinned

  4. 4

    and caused others to sin,

  5. 5

    בָּגוֹד בָּגַדְנוּ בְּךָ אָבִינוּ.

    we have surely betrayed You, our Father;

  6. 6

we were exiled because we lacked perception,1To follow Your paths.

  7. 7

    וְנִדְוִינוּ.

    and we have suffered;

  8. 8

though we have been dispersed and oppressed,

  9. 9

    we hope for Your deliverance.

  10. 10

Remove, O Master, the iniquity of Your servant,

  11. 11

and do not turn away in anger

  12. 12

    זֶרַע יְדִידֶיךָ.

    the children of Your loved one [the Patriarchs];

  13. 13

    remember Your mercies, Adonoy

  14. 14

    and Your kindnesses,

  15. 15

    [grant them] kindness and truth

  16. 16

as You swore to Your loved ones.

  17. 17

[They were punished with] exile and torture

  18. 18

because of their way of transgression,

  19. 19

    and were afflicted

  20. 20

with the ninety eight curses2See Deuteronomy 28:15–68.

  21. 21

upon which You made a covenant

  22. 22

    וְהִכְתַּבְתָּ לְאַיֵּם פּוֹשְׁעִים.

    to admonish transgressors;

  23. 23

    do not accuse Your people

  24. 24

who will be delivered through You.

  25. 25

Acquit Your children of great transgression,

  26. 26

they are humble in their repentance

  27. 27

    וּמִתְחַנְּנִים לְפָנֶיךָ.

    and entreat You with supplications;

  28. 28

cleanse the stain of their guilt

  29. 29

    with Your Divine cleansers,

  30. 30

    conceal their iniquities

  31. 31

and cast them into the depths

  32. 32

    of Your raging waters.

  33. 33

“Open their eyes,” release Your bound ones,3See Isaiah 61:1. This is a plea for redemption.

  34. 34

remove the stench of our iniquity,

  35. 35

    as with nitre,

  36. 36

tear up our records [of guilt],

  37. 37

    וְחוֹבוֹתֵינוּ וַתֵּר.

    and waive our liabilities;

  38. 38

    remember to show us compassion

  39. 39

even though Your Presence is concealed.

  40. 40

Remember the oath and covenant of long ago,

  41. 41

be gracious in the merit of the Patriarchs,

  42. 42

who are listed backwards.4See Leviticus 26:42. Jacob is written before Isaac and Isaac before Abraham.

  43. 43

The platform upon which the Levites sang,

  44. 44

    the blue-print of the Temple—

  45. 45

may it be Your will to return them to us,

  46. 46

    with Your love of old.

  47. 47

    Take my revenge

  48. 48

    from those who oppressed me,

  49. 49

    they refused to free us,

  50. 50

    וּבָנוּ מַחֲזִיקִים.

    and they held us with force;

  51. 51

the oppressed children of Judah of Israel—

  52. 52

    God, bring back their exiles

  53. 53

like springs in the desert.5Revive them as springs can revive an arid desert.

  54. 54

    Look from the heavens,

  55. 55

    from Your palace on high,

  56. 56

    and let be revealed

  57. 57

    הֲמוֹן מֵעֶיךָ וְרַחֲמֶיךָ.

    the abundance of Your pity and compassion;

  58. 58

say: “Enough!” punishment for Your beloved,

  59. 59

do good, as You see fit

  60. 60

to Your city and Your people.

  61. 61

Drown our sins in the depths of the sea,

  62. 62

    Your Holy Palace [the Temple]

  63. 63

raise it above the high mountains,

  64. 64

    [Israel] Your possession,

  65. 65

may they go with joyous hearts [to Jerusalem]

  66. 66

    וְחָלִיל

    accompanied with flutes;

  67. 67

then You will desire their righteous offerings,

  68. 68

burnt-offerings and priest’s meal offerings.6Which were totally consumed on the Altar.

  69. 69

    Almighty! King!

  70. 70

Who sits on the throne of mercy,

  71. 71

    governs with kindness

  72. 72

forgives the iniquities of His people.

  73. 73

He removes their sins one by one,

  74. 74

    increasing forgiveness to sinners,

  75. 75

    and pardon to transgressors.

  76. 76

    Acting righteously

  77. 77

    עִם כָּל בָּשָׂר וָרֽוּחַ.

    with all who are of flesh and spirit;

  78. 78

    not according to their wickedness

  79. 79

    does He repay them.

  80. 80

    Almighty!

  81. 81

    You instructed us to recite

  82. 82

    שְׁלשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה.

    the thirteen Divine attributes;

  83. 83

    remember unto us this day

  84. 84

the covenant of thirteen Divine attributes,

  85. 85

    as You made them known

  86. 86

to the humble Moses of old,

  87. 87

    as it is written,

  88. 88

“And Adonoy descended in the cloud,

  89. 89

    and stood with him there,

  90. 90

    and proclaimed the Name, Adonoy.

  91. 91

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  92. 92

And Adonoy passed before him [Moses],

  93. 93

    and proclaimed:

  94. 94

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  95. 95

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  96. 96

    Slow to Anger,

  97. 97

and Abundant in Kindness, and Truth.

  98. 98

    Keeper of kindness

  99. 99

    for thousands of generations,

  100. 100

    Endurer of iniquity, and transgression,

  101. 101

    וְחַטָּאָה

    and sin;

  102. 102

and Acquitter of those who repent.

  103. 103

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  104. 104

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  105. 105

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  106. 106

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  107. 107

    “For You, my Master,

  108. 108

    are good and forgiving,

  109. 109

    and abounding in kindness

  110. 110

to all who call upon You.”

  111. 111

    God!

  112. 112

    בָּאוּ גוֹיִם בְּנַחֲלָתֶךָ

    Nations have entered into Your inheritance;

  113. 113

    they have defiled

  114. 114

    the Sanctuary of Your holiness,

  115. 115

they have made Jerusalem into heaps of ruins.

  116. 116

Pour out Your wrath upon them,

  117. 117

and let Your fierce anger overtake them.

  118. 118

    Arise Judge of the earth,

  119. 119

repay the arrogant their just reward.

  120. 120

Give them according to their deeds,

  121. 121

    וּכְרֹעַ מַעַלְלֵיהֶם

    and their evil deceptions;

  122. 122

according to their actions, grant them,

  123. 123

    repay them their just reward.

  124. 124

Do good, as You see fit, to Zion

  125. 125

may You rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

  126. 126

As a father has compassion on his children

  127. 127

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  128. 128

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  129. 129

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  130. 130

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  131. 131

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  132. 132

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  133. 133

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  134. 134

    יְהֹוָה הוֹשִֽׁיעָה,

    Adonoy, deliver us;

  135. 135

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  136. 136

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  137. 137

    in accordance with the greatness

  138. 138

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  139. 139

and as You forgave this people

  140. 140

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  141. 141

    And there it is said:

  142. 142

    “And Adonoy said,

  143. 143

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  144. 144

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  145. 145

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  146. 146

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  147. 147

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  148. 148

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  149. 149

but because of Your great mercy.

  150. 150

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  151. 151

My Master, listen and take action,

  152. 152

    do not delay!

  153. 153

    For Your sake, my God,

  154. 154

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  155. 155

over Your city and over Your people.
