  1. 1

    [God] Who sits on high,

  3. 3

and gazes into the depths [of the earth]

  4. 4

and knows all that is hidden

  5. 5

    and understands all mysteries.

  6. 6

    Though our sins are overwhelming

  7. 7

and our iniquities have stained us,

  8. 8

    please! let Your compassion withhold

  9. 9

    Your anger and wrath,

  10. 10

    God, King Who sits

  11. 11

    on the Throne of Compassion.

  12. 12

    חָטָאנוּ צוּרֵנוּ

    We have sinned, our Rock;

  13. 13

    Pardon us our Creator!

  14. 14

And though she has abundantly sinned,

  15. 15

[she],1I.e. The nation of Israel. the wretched and mournful one,

  16. 16

she has suffered enough of the wrath

  17. 17

    of Your anger and fury.

  18. 18

    She has become desolate,

  19. 19

    mournful and devastated.

  20. 20

And from the time she was humiliated

  21. 21

she has not yet found compassion.

  22. 22

    חָטָאנוּ צוּרֵנוּ

    We have sinned, our Rock;

  23. 23

    Pardon us our Creator!

  24. 24

The remnants of the Assyrian exile,

  25. 25

when they fell into the hands of the lion,2I.e. Nebuchadnezzar.

  26. 26

he filled his treasures with their booty

  27. 27

and his dwellings with calves and fatted oxen.3That he robbed from them.

  28. 28

Soon afterwards [came] the wolf4I.e. the Persian exile.

  29. 29

and the panther5I.e. Rome. allied with others

  30. 30

and the poisonous snake6I.e. Edom. biting angrily,

  31. 31

[there is] no dressing or balm [for the wound].

  32. 32

    חָטָאנוּ צוּרֵנוּ

    We have sinned, our Rock;

  33. 33

    Pardon us our Creator!

  34. 34

    The face of one

  35. 35

guarded like the apple of one’s eye

  36. 36

has become [as blackened] as the

  37. 37

    bottom of a cooking pot,

  38. 38

for the wretched one7I.e. Nation of Israel. has been left

  39. 39

    without strength.

  40. 40

She has not hidden her face

  41. 41

from the humiliation and the wrath.8Of the Nations.

  42. 42

    [The curses] recorded,

  43. 43

as well as those not recorded in the Torah,

    [they all] befell her.

  45. 45

    חָטָאנוּ צוּרֵנוּ

    We have sinned, our Rock;

  46. 46

    Pardon us our Creator!

  47. 47

    Her life is precarious

  48. 48

because of the fears that come [upon her].

  49. 49

    Like goats and sheep

  50. 50

    among the lions,

  51. 51

    in darkness and demeaned,

  52. 52

    wounded and weakened.

  53. 53

    Even the leprosied and contaminated

  54. 54

point their finger at us [in ridicule].

  55. 55

    חָטָאנוּ צוּרֵנוּ

    We have sinned, our Rock;

  56. 56

    Pardon us our Creator!

  57. 57

    [Upon] the dispersion [of Israel]

  58. 58

into the world9“הֲדוֹמְךּ,” lit. Your footstool. The world is as a footstool for God.

  59. 59

and the destruction of Your Palace10I.e. the Temple.

  60. 60

    gaze from on high.

  61. 61

And upon the nations [that brought this about]

  62. 62

    pour out Your wrath.

  63. 63

    Remember Your promise

  64. 64

    אֲשֶׁר פַּצְתָּ לְעַמָּךְ.

    that You uttered to Your people;

  65. 65

“Even if at the ends of the world

  66. 66

    I will place you,

  67. 67

from there I will gather you

  68. 68

    and console you.

  69. 69

    חָטָאנוּ צוּרֵנוּ

    We have sinned, our Rock;

  70. 70

    Pardon us our Creator!

  71. 71

You affixed a time for those who are sold11I.e. the Torah limits the selling of a person into slavery to six years.

  72. 72

[to] double the time of hired workers.12V. Isaiah 16, v. 14.

  73. 73

Yet they13The Nation of Israel. are dispersed to all corners,14Of the world.

  74. 74

    and after so many years

  75. 75

    are still not remembered.

  76. 76

[Fulfill the promises] that were said to the Son of Amotz:15I.e. Isaiah the son of Amotz.

  77. 77

    “Though mountains and mighty rocks

  78. 78

    may move,

  79. 79

    My benefaction and My covenant

  80. 80

will never be removed from You.”

  81. 81

    חָטָאנוּ צוּרֵנוּ

    We have sinned, our Rock;

  82. 82

    Pardon us our Creator!

  83. 83

Remember to us the covenant of the Patriarchs,

  84. 84

    as You promised,

  85. 85

“And I will remember my covenant with Jacob,

  86. 86

and also my covenant with Isaac,

  87. 87

and also my covenant with Abraham

  88. 88

    will I remember,”

  89. 89

and the land I will remember.

  90. 90

Remember to us the covenant of the ancestors,

  91. 91

    as You promised,

  92. 92

“And I will remember for their sake,

  93. 93

    the covenant with their ancestors,

  94. 94

    whom I brought out

  95. 95

    of the land of Egypt,

  96. 96

    לְעֵינֵי הַגּוֹיִם

    in the sight of the nations;

  97. 97

    to be their God

  98. 98

    I am Adonoy.”

  99. 99

Do unto us as You promised,

  100. 100

    “And yet for all that,

  101. 101

when they are in the land of their enemies,

  102. 102

    I will not reject them

  103. 103

and I will not abhor them, to destroy them,

  104. 104

    לְהָפֵר בְּרִיתִי אִתָּם

    to annul My covenant with them;

  105. 105

for I am Adonoy, their God.”

  106. 106

Be accessible to us when we seek You,

  107. 107

    as it is written:

  108. 108

    “And from there

  109. 109

you will seek Adonoy, your God,

  110. 110

    וּמָצָֽאתָ

    and you will find Him;

  111. 111

    if you search after Him

  112. 112

    with all your heart

  113. 113

    and with all your soul.”

  114. 114

    Open our hearts

  115. 115

    to love Your Name,

  116. 116

as it is written in Your Torah:

  117. 117

“And Adonoy, your God will open your heart,

  118. 118

and the heart of your descendants,

  119. 119

    to love Adonoy, your God,

  120. 120

    with all your heart,

  121. 121

    and with all your soul,

  122. 122

    that you may live.”

  123. 123

    Sprinkle clean water upon us,

  124. 124

and cleanse us, as it is written:

  125. 125

“And I will sprinkle clean water upon you,

  126. 126

    וּטְהַרְתֶּם

    and you will be clean;

  127. 127

    from all your defilements,

  128. 128

    and from all your idols,

  129. 129

    I will cleanse you.”

  130. 130

    Sweep aside our transgressions

  131. 131

as a thick cloud and as a mist,

  132. 132

    as You have promised:

  133. 133

“I have swept away like a thick cloud

  134. 134

    your transgressions,

  135. 135

    וְכֶעָנָן חַטֹּאתֶֽיךָ

    and like a mist, your sins;

  136. 136

return to Me, for I have redeemed You.”

  137. 137

Blot out our transgressions for Your sake,

  138. 138

    as You promised:

  139. 139

    “I, I [alone] am He

  140. 140

    Who blots out your transgressions

  141. 141

    לְמַעֲנִי

    for My own sake;

  142. 142

and your sins, I will not recall.”

  143. 143

Make our sins as white as snow or wool,

  144. 144

    as it is written:

  145. 145

“Come now, let us reason together,

  146. 146

    says Adonoy,

  147. 147

though your sins be as scarlet,

  148. 148

    כַּשֶּֽׁלֶג יַלְבִּֽינוּ

    they shall be as white as snow;

  149. 149

though they be red as crimson,

  150. 150

they shall become [white] as wool.”

  151. 151

Have compassion on us and do not destroy us,

  152. 152

    as it is written:

  153. 153

“For an Almighty of mercy is Adonoy,

  154. 154

    אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ

    your God;

  155. 155

He will not abandon you or destroy you,

  156. 156

    and He will not forget

  157. 157

    the covenant of your fathers

  158. 158

    which He swore to them.”

  159. 159

Gather our dispersed ones, as it is written:

  160. 160

    “If your dispersed

  161. 161

are in the farthermost part of heaven,

  162. 162

from there Adonoy, your God will gather you,

  163. 163

and from there He will take you.”

  164. 164

    Bring back our captivity

  165. 165

    and have compassion on us,

  166. 166

    as it is written:

  167. 167

    “And Adonoy, your God will-return

  168. 168

    אֶת שְׁבוּתְךָ וְרִחֲמֶֽךָ

    your captivity and have compassion on you;

  169. 169

and He will again gather you

  170. 170

    from [among] all the peoples,

  171. 171

where Adonoy, your God has scattered you.”

  172. 172

Bring us to Your holy mountain,

  173. 173

and make us joyful in Your House of Prayer,

  174. 174

    as it is written:

  175. 175

“And I will bring them to My holy mountain,

  176. 176

    וְשִׂמַּחְתִּים בְּבֵית תְּפִלָּתִי

    and make them joyful in My House of Prayer;

  177. 177

    their burnt-offerings and sacrifices

  178. 178

will be accepted with favor on My Altar,

  179. 179

    for My House,

  180. 180

will be called a House of Prayer

  181. 181

    for all peoples.”
