Selichot Nusach Lita Linear · Third Day of the Ten Days of Penitence, Chapter 3

‹›
  1. 1

Our God and God of our fathers!

  3. 3

We seek You, we plead with You,

  4. 4

    You Who forms the mountains,

  5. 5

Who relates to man his thoughts and words.

  6. 6

We pray to You and implore You

  7. 7

    in shame and disgrace

  8. 8

    because of our sins

  9. 9

    which we enumerate today.

  10. 10

We are gathered old and young,

  11. 11

in the House of Prayer, our diminutive Temple,

  12. 12

with enfeebled hands and shaking limbs,

  13. 13

alarmed and terrified on all sides.

  14. 14

We dread and fear the two emissaries—

  15. 15

“anger and wrath” the two accusers.

  16. 16

    As we search our deeds

  17. 17

    and behold they are abominable,

  18. 18

    we are seized with trembling,

  19. 19

    with pangs and sorrow.

  20. 20

    Our faces are blackened

  21. 21

and we go about in depression,

  22. 22

    we are shaken

  23. 23

    וְנַעֲשֵׂינוּ פֵרוּרִים

    and shattered to pieces;

  24. 24

    our loins shake

  25. 25

as with the pangs of a woman in labor,

  26. 26

    we fear and dread

  27. 27

    from our many iniquities,

  28. 28

    as we substitute our prayers

  29. 29

    for the offerings of bullocks,

  30. 30

    depending, trusting

  31. 31

    and hoping in Your mercy.

  32. 32

    For in Your abundant mercy

  33. 33

    we trust,

  34. 34

and on Your righteousness, we rely,

  35. 35

and for Your pardon, we hope,

  36. 36

and for Your deliverance, we yearn.

  37. 37

    You are a King

  38. 38

Who loves righteousness from of old,

  39. 39

Who passes over the iniquities of His people,

  40. 40

and removes the sins of those who fear Him.

  41. 41

You made a covenant with the Patriarchs,

  42. 42

    and will keep [Your] oath

  43. 43

    with their descendants.

  44. 44

    You are He Who descended

  45. 45

in the cloud of Your glory, on Mount Sinai,

  46. 46

and disclosed the ways of Your goodness

  47. 47

    to Moses, Your servant.

  48. 48

    The ways of Your kindliness,

  49. 49

    גִּלִּיתָ לוֹ,

    You revealed to him;

  50. 50

and You made known to him

  51. 51

that You are Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  52. 52

Slow to anger, Abounding in kindness,

  53. 53

    and full of beneficence,

  54. 54

    guiding the entire world

  55. 55

    with the quality of mercy.

  56. 56

    And so it is written:

  57. 57

    “And He said:

  58. 58

    ‘I will cause to pass

  59. 59

    all My goodness before you,

  60. 60

and I will proclaim the Name, Adonoy

  61. 61

    לְפָנֶיךָ.

    in your presence;

  62. 62

    I will be gracious

  63. 63

to whom I will be gracious,

  64. 64

    and I will be compassionate

  65. 65

to whom I will be compassionate.’”

  66. 66

You are Almighty, Slow to Anger,

  67. 67

Lord of Mercy, You are called,

  68. 68

and the way of repentance, You have taught us.

  69. 69

The greatness of Your mercy and kindliness,

  70. 70

remember this day and every day

  71. 71

for the descendants of Your loved ones.

  72. 72

    Turn to us with compassion

  73. 73

for You are the Lord of Mercy.

  74. 74

    With supplication and prayer

  75. 75

    we approach Your Presence,

  76. 76

    as You made known

  77. 77

to [Moses,] the modest one of old.

  78. 78

    From Your fierce anger turn,

  79. 79

as it is written in Your Torah.

  80. 80

In the shadow of Your wings,

  81. 81

may we be sheltered and lodged,

  82. 82

as on the day [of which it is said:]

  83. 83

“When Adonoy descended in the cloud.”

  84. 84

    Remove [our] transgression,

  85. 85

    and blot out [our] iniquity,

  86. 86

as on the day [of which it is said:]

  87. 87

“And He stood with him there.”

  88. 88

    Give ear to our cry

  89. 89

    and listen to our speech,

  90. 90

as on the day [of which it is said:]

  91. 91

“And He proclaimed the Name, Adonoy”

  92. 92

    And there it is said:

  93. 93

    Congregation and Chazzan:

  94. 94

“And Adonoy passed before him [Moses]

  95. 95

    and proclaimed:

  96. 96

    Adonoy, Adonoy,

  97. 97

    Almighty, Merciful, Gracious,

  98. 98

    Slow to Anger,

  99. 99

and Abundant in Kindness and Truth.

  100. 100

    Keeper of kindness

  101. 101

    for thousands of generations,

  102. 102

    Endurer of iniquity and transgression,

  103. 103

    and sin,

  104. 104

And Acquitter of those who repent.”

  105. 105

“And pardon our iniquity and our sin,

  106. 106

and take us for Your inheritance.”

  107. 107

Pardon us our Father, for we have sinned,

  108. 108

forgive us our King, for we have transgressed.

  109. 109

    For You, my Master,

  110. 110

    are good and forgiving,

  111. 111

    and abounding in kindness

  112. 112

to all who call upon You.

  113. 113

    To You, Adonoy, we cry

  114. 114

and in the morning, our prayers greet You.

  115. 115

To You we lift our eyes,

  116. 116

    [You] Who resides in heaven.

  117. 117

We lift our hearts to our hands

  118. 118

    to the Almighty in heaven.

  119. 119

God, our King from of old

  120. 120

Who does wonders in the midst of the earth.

  121. 121

You are our King, O God,

  122. 122

    command the deliverance of Jacob.

  123. 123

    Deliver, Adonoy, Your people,

  124. 124

    the remnant of Israel.

  125. 125

    הוֹשִׁיעֵנוּ אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׁעֵנוּ

    Deliver us, God of our deliverance;

  126. 126

gather us and save us from the nations,

  127. 127

to give thanks to Your holy Name,

  128. 128

to be extolled in Your praise.

  129. 129

As a father has compassion on his children

  130. 130

so do You have compassion on us, Adonoy.

  131. 131

    לַיהֹוָה הַיְשׁוּעָה,

    Deliverance is Adonoy’s;

  132. 132

upon Your people is Your blessing. Selah!

  133. 133

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

  134. 134

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob. Selah!

  135. 135

    Adonoy of Hosts!

  136. 136

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

  137. 137

    Adonoy, deliver us!

  138. 138

the King will answer us on the day we call.

  139. 139

The Chazzan repeats after the congregation:

  140. 140

“Please pardon the sins of this nation

  141. 141

    in accordance with the greatness

  142. 142

    חַסְדֶּֽךָ.

    of Your lovingkindness;

  143. 143

and as You forgave this people

  144. 144

from when it left Egypt until now.”

  145. 145

    And there it is said:

  146. 146

    The Congregation says:

  147. 147

    “And Adonoy said,

  148. 148

I have pardoned [them] as you have asked.”

  149. 149

Incline Your ear, my God, and hear,

  150. 150

open Your eyes and behold our desolate places,

  151. 151

    וְהָעִיר אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלֶֽיהָ

    and the city which is called by Your Name;

  152. 152

for it is not on account of our righteousness

  153. 153

that we let fall our supplication before You,

  154. 154

but because of Your great mercy.

  155. 155

My Master, hear! My Master, pardon!

  156. 156

My Master, listen and take action,

  157. 157

    do not delay!

  158. 158

    For Your sake, my God,

  159. 159

    because Your Name is proclaimed

  160. 160

over Your city and over Your people.
