Answer. The essence of the sefirot is equally receptive to every thing and to its opposite. For if they did not possess a power equally receptive to both, there could be no power for every thing: that which is light is not darkness, and that which is darkness is not light. Their essence should therefore be compared to the will of the soul, which is equally receptive to all the desires and all the thoughts that extend from it. Although these are many, their root is one, both in a thing and in its opposite. The same applies to the life of the soul, intellect, grace, lovingkindness, and mercy: although they are something brought forth from nothing, their existence is not complete in itself. Yet, when the essence is clothed in an image, we may compare the first power to hidden light; the second power to light that contains every hue. This light resembles tekhelet, which is the culmination of all colors, although no particular hue can be discerned within it. The third power may be compared to green light; the fourth power to white light; the fifth power to red light; the sixth power comprises white and red; the seventh power is red tending toward white; the eighth power is white tending toward red; the ninth power comprises white and red, red tending toward white, and white tending toward red; and the tenth power comprises every hue.
