One who rents a house to another on the fourteenth [of Nissan]—whoever has the key in his hand at the beginning of the night of the fourteenth, which is when the obligation to search begins, upon him falls the duty to search. If it remained in the hand of the landlord, upon him falls the duty to search. If it came into the hand of the renter, he is obligated to search. One who rents a house from another on the fourteenth and does not know whether it was searched or not—if he [the landlord] is in the city, he asks him whether he searched it or not. And if he is not in the city, we presume leniently that he searched it, and he [the renter] nullifies [the chametz] in his heart, and that is sufficient. One who rents a house from another with the presumption that it was searched, and found that it was not searched—he cannot retract and say "you deceived me," even in a place where they customarily pay wages for the search, and all the more so if each one searches for himself. All are trusted regarding the search for chametz to testify that the house was searched, even women, slaves, and minors. And even if we know that the homeowner did not search and they say "we searched it," they are trusted. Maimonides of blessed memory wrote: provided the minor has sufficient understanding to search.
