הזהר ושמור נפשך פן תלכד ברשתו של יצר הרע המדיחך מארץ החיים המשיאך לדבר עבירה קטנה להמשיך לבך לגדולה. השפילהו והכניעהו להמסר בידך ואתה לא תהיה נמסר בידו פן יביאך לבאר שחת באש לא נופח ולא יהיה יצרך הרע נמסר בידך אם לא על ידי תשובה לבוראך והרחיקך מבשר תאוה. זכור נא לימים אשר יבואו ומרוב טוב הצפון כי אם תטיב שאת ואם לא תטיב לפתח חטאת רובץ. ואתה בן אדם שוב ליוצרך בכל לבבך והכן לבבך שלם אל בוחן כליות ושא נא עיניך אל השמים ויאר אליך בשמחה ואל יכשילך יצר הרע בחייך ובכל יום וליל שוב אל לבבך. כי אחר המות יש חבוט הקבר ואחריו דינה של גיהנם המר כי במר יבכיון שיתנו כח לאדם שיסבול כח היסורין. ועוד אחר שינצל מדינה של גיהנם יש דינים אחרים קשים ומרים גם הרמה אשר תצא מבשרך תאכל את נבלתך ואמרו חכמים קשה רמה למת כמחט בבשר החי:
Beware, watch your soul lest you be captured in the domain of the evil inclination, lest it thrust you aside from the land of the living. He who seduces you to commit a lesser evil and one who draws your heart to a graver one,1Shabbath 105b. humble him and suppress him that he be given over into your hand and not that you be given over into his hand, lest he bring you to the lowest pit with fire unblown. And thine evil inclination will not be given over into your hand, but through repentance to your Creator. And to further yourself from the flesh of lust, remember the days which are to come and the great good stored up, “And if thou doest well shall it not be lifted up? And if thou doest not well sin coucheth at the door.”2Genesis 4:7. And you, son of man, return to your Maker with all your heart, and set your heart aright with Him who tries your mind. Raise up your eyes to the heavens and let it shine upon you with joy. Let not your evil inclination trip you during your life. Each day and night return to your heart. For after death there are the afflictions of the grave and after that the bitter judgement of Gehenna. For bitterly do they weep, that they (in Gehenna) be given strength to endure the intensity of the afflictions.3Gittin 57a. And even after he has been rescued from the judgement of Gehenna there are still other judgements difficult and bitter.4Baba Metzia 58b. Also the worms that come out of your flesh will eat your carcass and our sages said the worms are as painful for the dead as a needle in the flesh of the living.5Berakoth 18b.
