ואתחנן אל ה׳ בעת ההיא לאמר ה׳ אלהים אתה החילות להראות את עבדך את גדלך ואת ידך החזקה וגו׳ להבין הענין על פי דרכינו נקדים פסוקי ההפטורה (ישעיה מ׳, א׳-ב׳) נחמו נחמו עמי יאמר אלהיכם דברו על לב ירושלים וקראו אליה כי מלאה צבאה כי נרצה עונה כי לקחה מיד ה׳ כפליים בכל חטאתיה וגו׳:
"And I entreated the Lord at that time, saying: O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your mighty hand…" To understand the matter according to our way [of interpretation], let us first preface with the verses from the haftarah (Isaiah 40:1–2): “Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God. “Speak to the heart of Jerusalem and call to her, for her warfare is full, for her iniquity has been appeased, for she has received from the hand of the Lord double for all her sins…”
