שמעתי ממורי פירוש הפסוק (תהילים צ״ה:ד׳) אשר בידו מחקרי ארץ וגו'. שהקשה למה [שהעולם קדמון ח"ו]. מה שאין כן עתה. מאמינים שהוא יתברך שמו אחד יחיד ומיוחד. והשיב שהיה מצד עכירות חומר הארץ. שאז היה יותר רב ועצום. מה שאין כן עתה וכו'. ולשון ידו הוא סוף המדרגה. וזהו שאמר אשר בידו מחקרי ארץ וכו' ודפח"ח כי קצרתי: (תוי"י סו"פ וישב דל"ד ע"ג)
For in His hands are the depths of the earth. (Psalms 95:4) Why, in times of old, did the philosophers believe in the eternity of the world, whereas that is not the case now, in that they believe that G‑d is one and unique? This was due to the coarseness of the physical world, which was much stronger in those days, though that is not the case today. The words “His hands” refers to the lowest level.
