לא יאמר אדם כשאוכל להתפלל בהתלהבות אתפלל ואם לאו לא אאנוס את עצמי להתפלל, כי אם אדרבה, במשל המלך כשבא למלחמה ומשנה את בגדיו, אותם שהם קרובים למלכות מכירים את המלך בתנועותיו, ואותן שאינם קרובים למלך, רואים כשהעם משמרים יותר באותו המקום, מסתמא שם המלך, כך הוא כשאינו יכול להתפלל, משמרים את המלך שלא לגלות אותו לפניו, ואם כן יחזק את עצמו יותר, כי הלא המלך בכאן ומסתתרין אותו בפניו: (צוואת הריב"ש ד"י ע"א).
Don’t think, “I will pray with enthusiasm when I can, but I won’t push myself when I cannot.” The opposite is true! For example, when a king enters the battlefield, he changes his clothing.40So that the enemy will not recognize him and try to kill him. While the servants close to him can recognize him through his gestures, those who are far from the king can still tell that the troops are guarding a certain place, and that the king is probably there.
This is also true of prayer. The [distracting thoughts and emotions] are guarding the King so that you cannot see Him. You should therefore apply yourself even more, for the King is there; they are merely hiding Him from you. Ibid. 10a
