שמעתי ממורי זלה"ה משל על בעלי תפלות בימים נוראים, שלא יסמכו עליהם בני העולם רק ישתדל כל אחד להתפלל בכוונה בעצמו, אמר משל פעם אחד היו שני מלכים נלחמים יחד, ומלך אחד היה אדיר ותקיף שהיו לו גבורי חיל מלבושים בשריון וקשקשים וכו', וזה המלך שכנגדו הלך למצוא אנשים גבורים כאלו ולא עלתה לו וכו'. עד שאמר לחילו שלא יסמכו על הגבורים וכו' ודפח"ח: (בן פורת יוסף דמ"ד ע"ב)
I heard a parable from my Teacher (the Baal Shem Tov) about the High Holiday cantors, for one should not rely upon them, but should himself pray with concentration. Once, two kings were at war with each other. One king was very powerful, for his soldiers dressed in mail and armor. The other king sought out mighty soldiers like them, but could not find them. Thus, he told his army not to rely on the mighty men. Ben Poras Yosef, p. 44b.
