I also asked [in my dream] regarding those who shave with a razor, leaving one [line of] hair below. Is this a transgression or not?1Maimonides (Mishneh Torah Avodat Kochavim 12:6) writes that he has a tradition that forty hairs can be left on the corners of the beard. The Tur Yoreh Deah 181 cites Maimonides, but writes four hairs instead of forty. Beit Yosef ad loc understands this as the minimal width of the beard, and reads Rashi on Makkot 20b:6:2 in this light, but says since there is doubt about the meaning, the beard should be left unshaved.

והשיבו שערך כעדר העזים שכולם מתאימות ושכולה אין בהם:
They responded: "Your hair is like a flock of goats, all are aligned and not one is missing." (Shir Hashirim 4:2-3)
