Teshuvot Min HaShamayim · Chapter 46

‹›
  1. 1

I also asked [in my dream] regarding non-Jewish households where it is well-known that they do not set their cheeses in animal stomachs, nor with the rennet from the stomach lining, but rather with a known flower [that curdles the milk]. Is it permissible for a Jew who is being hosted by them to eat their cheese?1See the opinion of Rabbeinu Tam in Tosafot on Avodah Zarah 35a:14, where the Geonim of Narbonne are said to have permitted cheeses set with flowers. Outside of Narbonne, where it is set in animal stomach, Ri ben Chaim is cited as saying that there is a slight prohibition (יש טעם קצת לאסור), because of the salt transferring the taste of meat to the milk. For perhaps we should be wary of the possibility that they bought their cheese from elsewhere, or that other cheese was given to them as a gift and became mixed in their own stock.
