I also asked [in my dream] if crushing mustard during the festivals is permitted. For there are those who say that if they are crushed in advance before the festival, they do not release their flavour [as much as if they are freshly crushed on the day.] So too with salt, there are some who say that it needs to be ground in an unusual way.1See Rif Beitzah 6b:4, who holds that spices can be crushed on the festival in a normal fashion, while salt needs to be done tilted or in an unusual way. In Tosafot on Beitzah 14a:6, the Ri is cited as being strict about grinding any spices, but since the Rif and Rav Yehudai Gaon before him allow it, the author blesses those who refrain and permits those who have this practice. Mustard here is compared to pepper and other spices that are better fresh, see Tur Orach Chaim 504.
