Torah Library is a free, open-source study site. You can read everything without an account. This page explains what we collect, who handles it, and how to remove it.
What we collect
- Your account, if you create one.Your email address and a display name (if you don't enter one, we use your email). You can sign in with an emailed link or a password, which is stored only as a hash. If Google sign-in is offered and you use it, Google shares your name, email address and profile picture with us.
- Your study data. When you're signed in, the pages you open, your bookmarks and notes, the pages you mark complete and where you left off are saved to your account so they follow you across devices. When you're signed out, they stay in your browser.
- Sign-in sessions. A session cookie keeps you signed in. Each session is stored with the IP address and browser it was created from.
- Anonymous analytics. We count page views with Umami, which we host ourselves. It sets no cookies and doesn't identify you. Vercel Speed Insights also collects anonymous page-speed measurements.
- Error reports. When something breaks, a technical error report goes to Sentry. It is configured not to send personal information.
Cookies and browser storage
Besides the sign-in cookie, two cookies remember the last page you read so the home page can offer "Continue". Your theme, reading preferences, word-review deck and signed-out progress are kept in your browser's local storage. There are no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
Services that handle your data
- Vercel hosts the site and keeps standard request logs.
- Neon runs the Postgres database that stores accounts and synced study data.
- Upstash runs a Redis cache for texts and short-lived rate-limit counters.
- Cloudflare Email sends sign-in, verification and password-reset emails.
- Sentry receives error reports.
- Google handles sign-in, only if you choose "Continue with Google".
We don't sell your data, and the site shows no ads.
The texts
The texts come from Sefaria. Our servers request them, so Sefaria doesn't receive your account details. Each text is credited with its version and license on the page where it appears.
Deleting your account
Email hello@torahlib.orgfrom the address on your account and we'll delete the account and its synced study data. Data kept only in your browser is removed when you clear this site's data.
