Pele Yoetz · Pele Yoetz, Chapter 4

‹›
  1. 1

And one also needs to strengthen himself to arouse his love [for his wife] so that his children will not be the children of a hated wife, G-d forbid, and “according to the pain is the reward” (Avot 5:23). And the fence to prevent disputes from arising in the home is to not examine every household expenditure down to the penny, for a woman who is jealous of her peer is as difficult as Sheol [the grave]. Therefore, a man should increase the honor of his home as he is blessed, each thing in its [proper] time, and appease his wife, for blessing does not rest in a home except for the sake of his wife (Bava Metzia 59a). And peace at home is important to the point that it is permissible to dissolve the Great Name [of Hashem] to bring peace between man and wife (Nedarim 66b). Therefore one should greatly strengthen himself to remove evil from his home and to induce the Shekhinah to enter it.

  4. 4

And included in this love [of his wife] is that one should not wander [i.e. leave] far away on a distant journey for a long time, for besides the fact that he causes harm to himself, as will be explained in the section “thought” with the help of heaven, he also brings pain to the body of the wife. For “love is strong as death” (Song of Songs 8:6), and when her husband is separated from her, she is poor and afflicted; she lives a life of sorrow. At the very least he should be careful to appease [her] with words, with letters of peace to “soften the blood of love”. And according to what he can afford he should at times send gifts and pleasing things to his wife to revive her crushed heart, bring pleasure to her soul, and diminish her pain, and it will be considered as a great mitzvah whether [the gift is] small or large.

  5. 5

And even greater is the obligation of the wife to love her husband, honor him as a king among his troops, be in awe of him, and fulfill his desire and will with all her might. And all her focus and attention should be to strive to fully understand what her husband thinks and desires, and to do his will for the sake of finding favor in his eyes. And the essence of her love is love of the soul — she should devote herself to helping him in his service of Hashem, may He be blessed, for this is her portion. And with sweet lips she should speak to him if she needs to guide him on the good path, and to comfort him when he is in distress. And she should rise while it is still night to wake him up, and serve Him [Hashem] together, shoulder to shoulder in the service of Hashem, may He be blessed. And it goes without saying that she should be careful with all her might to not to be the cause of any harm that would prevent him from serving Hashem, may His name be blessed, G-d forbid, for that woman will bear her sin. What can I say, for not all temperaments are the same, except that everything is according to what kind of person he is: she needs to conduct herself according to his characteristics to find favor and good understanding so that their marriage will turn out well in love and brotherhood. The wisdom of women builds her house (Proverbs 14:1), and one who fears Hashem shall be praised (Proverbs 31:30). For besides needing to be modest, “the king’s daughter is all glorious within” (Psalms 45:14), so that she not cause men to sin through their eyes and hearts. And she needs to be adorned for her husband and be careful with cleanliness and purity and orderly with expenditures in order to not cause her husband to sin by turning his eyes to another. These actions too will bring her closer to him and make her find favor in his eyes

  6. 6

And behold, if a woman is given into the embrace of a G-d fearing man, and how much more so if he possesses Torah and greatness, she will naturally honor and love him with a great love. [But] indeed more encouragement is needed for the woman whose portion is a man with difficult character traits and temperaments, despised and insignificant among men, [and] lacking all good. [Even] for this she should not trifle his honor in her eyes and despise him in her heart, G-d forbid, rather at all times she should be careful to honor him, whether righteous or sinful, easy or burdensome, for the word of the King, the King of the world, is upon her. And what does she have to do concerning the hidden things of the Merciful One? For G-d sits and hand-picks marriages, and thus all that He put upon her to do, she must do. To what is this similar? To the man who who the king desires to honor, having appointed him as second to the king, and thus the entire nation is required to honor him even if he is a leper or a zav [i.e. has a bodily discharge], so too is the case here. And just as a woman should be cautious in the commandments of Niddah, Challah, and candle-lighting, so too should she be careful with honoring her husband, for thus the King commands her. And her reward will be greater, since her actions prove that she does these things for their own sake, fulfilling the decree of the King of the universe. And our rabbis of blessed memory say (Tanna Devei Eliyahu Rabbah, Chapter 9): “there is no virtuous woman among women except one who does the will of her husband”. And all women should take warning from the incident (Nedarim 66b) concerning Bava ben Buta and the woman who accorded honor to her husband and struck Bava ben Buta on the head in carrying out the will of her husband [in reality, the husband never intended for her to strike Bava ben Buta, and yet she was still rewarded for her efforts based upon her understanding]. And thus all women must give honor to their husbands, the great and small alike (Esther 1:20).

  7. 7

And there are women devoid of knowledge, that cause their husbands strife over household needs that he did not bring, and this is great stupidity. In any case, if the husband is poor and doesn’t have the means for something, his [own] grief, pressure, shame, and humiliation are enough for him, for he is ashamed to reveal to his wife that he doesn’t have the means. And the wife must be sensible to ensure that she does not add to her husband’s pain, but rather, on the contrary she should comfort him with the sweetness of her lips and tell him: “do not be sorry about your empty purse, for Hashem will not spurn forever [Lamentations 3:31], and there will come days in which there will be delight, in which we shall be sated with bread and be well-off. Or there will be pleasure that our tables are full of abundance in the World to Come, for not all merit to eat from two tables [see Berakhot 5b], and this world is fleeting and empty. Rise, my father, eat your bread with joy, for also on bread alone does man live [play on Deuteronomy 8:3]”. And she should speak good words like these to him in favor and kindness, until he his happy and gives thanks for his portion, for the good fortune that fell to his lot.

  8. 8

And if Hashem broadens her husband’s means, and yet he remains stingy with household needs or delays in bringing them, what concern is it of hers? She puts what he brings in front of him and he eats it. Will he be able to say to her “why haven’t you made the delicacies I enjoy”? She will say to him “how can I make that which you have not brought?” And if she makes a quarrel over clothing, jewelry, and worldly pleasures, this too is vain and vexation of spirit, for “better is dry bread and quietness with it” (Proverbs 17:1). And if the great name [of Hashem] written in holiness can be erased for peace in the home (Nedarim 66b), how much more so does the husband and wife need to dissolve and nullify their wills for the sake of peace in the home. And the wife should sense that her husband isn’t as well-off as she thinks and doesn’t wish to tell her that he doesn’t have the means, since he thinks this is bad luck for her, and similar sufficient reasons he may have for not fulfilling her will. Therefore she should not press at the time nor force him against his judgment to increase his spending against his will and not to his benefit. And likewise she needs to sense when her husband is angry at her over nothing, for perhaps he suffered in the market and was greatly angered over something that happened, as the people say: “able or unable, he quarrels with his wife”. And she must tolerate it, and not enrage him or distress him further.

  9. 9

And this is a great principle: if there is contention between people or between husband and wife, and one was the one who “opened the waters” initiating the argument [i.e. opened the floodgates for further contention] (Proverbs 17:14), and went out of line and opened his mouth without restraint, even if he can overpower his opponent, he should not say a word at the time of his anger, whether good or bad. Rather, wait until the time passes, and after a day or two admonish him in-person peacefully and fairly and with calm language, and say to him: why have you done this? What is my crime or sin that you have pursued me with more and more anger though I have no violence in my hands? Is this good in the eyes of G-d? And similar good words. One who does this loves peace and pursues peace [see Pirkei Avot 1:12] , and “there was peace in his army and tranquility in his palaces” [see Psalms 122:7]. They are the pillars of the world. As our Rabbis of blessed memory say (Chullin 89a) on the verse (Job 26:7) “he hangs the world on nothing [blima]”, that the world stands on he who restrains [bolem] his mouth during an argument, for by this the argument will be barren, not giving birth [to further conflict].

  10. 10

And a woman whose lot has fallen to an evil and worthless man, who strikes and curses [her], who forces himself upon her [I.e. demands intercourse. This does not mean that he physically forces himself upon her, but rather pushes and demands], should take upon herself the judgment of heaven. She should suffer and not lose heart as atonement for her soul, for she will be well-rewarded in the world to come. And a woman of valor, an intelligent wife, will not reveal her husband’s disgrace and his bad temperament and nature to others, and her voice will not be heard, in order to not debase her husband and to not add to his hate of her for revealing his disgrace, for then his nostrils will smoke, and his anger will flare, and he will strike her even more severely. And especially she should not reveal anything of her mistreatment, distress, and pain to her father, mother, or brother. For what will [good] she find in the pain of her father, mother, and brother, that they will suffer heartfelt anguish, until a fire burns within them over the pain of their daughter? [Then] they will go out with weapons, and fight with the husband until the flames of their strife are fully kindled, and the woman will bear her sin. And she will eat the fruits [i.e. bear the consequences] in this world: she will be hated by her husband and he will add to her mistreatment for revealing things between him and her.

  11. 11

And thus her father, mother, or relatives, if they have sense and understanding, even if the suffering of their daughter was revealed to them, however great, they should act as if they know nothing, and receive her husband with a pleasant countenance for the sake of their daughter. And even if they want to raise their voices and argue with him, they should find a way to make it appear as if the report came from the neighbors, who heard it through the window, and the like. And even better is if she [the daughter] doesn’t reveal anything as we said, in order to not pain them and cause them to hate him [the husband] in their hearts. Instead, she should act as a wife who has found peace in her in-laws’ house and eager to go tell its praises in her father’s house, and she should say to them that all is good in her home. And it will be accounted to her as a mitzvah that she brought joy to the hearts of her father, mother, and relatives, and she [will thus] be worthy to be protected and granted a good outcome. And even greater is if she rebukes him herself at an opportune time with pleasant speech, grace, and kindness. Certainly this [sweet speech] produces more fruit, for it is truly said (Proverbs 25:15): “a soft tongue breaks the bone”. And she should also pour out her soul before Hashem every day; perhaps Hashem will show her favor and her prayers will bear fruit to return her husband to the good path, and thus she will also find rest.

  12. 12

And included in the love of a wife for a husband, is that she prays for him before Hashem, for a woman’s prayer comes from the tenderness of her heart, and her tears come readily. If she shouts to Hashem in the walls of her heart, certainly her prayers will bear fruit. And thus a woman must pray for her children, for [when] her husband and children have peace, she will have peace, and who will have more compassion for them than her? (And if G-d will be with me, I will arrange a book of women’s affairs as I desire, [there] I will also write prayers pertaining to women with the help of heaven). In light of this, she should be careful and guard herself invoke [heavenly] judgment upon her husband and to not shed tears because of him, even though a greater obligation [to not cause her pain] is placed upon him, as our sages of blessed memory say (Bava Metzia 59a [see also Rashi]): A man must always be careful about mistreating his wife, because, since she is prone to tears, the punishment for mistreating her is quick to come. But she too should take this to heart, for if evil befalls her husband, G-d forbid, she will be among the first to suffer, and she will have harmed her own soul. Let everyone hear and fear [because of] what happened in the Talmud (Ketubod 62b) to the wife of a certain rabbi [Rav Rehumi], that she was waiting for her husband to return from his journey, and after he didn’t come, she shed two tears due to her pain, and immediately her husband died on her account [the roof he was sitting on collapsed due to her tears] even though he did not mistreat her nor mean to cause her pain. And it seems that there is a moment of [divine] anger that causes a man to die due to a light manner, may the Merciful one save us from this. Men should therefore tremble to not cause pain to their wives, and women should fear crying on account of their husbands. Rather, they should seek mercy for them. These are some of the proper paths of a husband and wife that are pure, and the wise one will hear and learn. And there is more in the book “Shevet Mussar” by Rav Eliyahu HaKohen, may his memory be for a blessing, in the first chapter concerning conduct between husband and wife, see there. And so they will do and add this to their conduct in the good path according to their personalities, so that the Divine Presence may rest between them and peace may be in their home.

  13. 13

And this commandment is the task of the father and mother of the wife to advise [her] before marriage and afterwards, to do these and similar things, and to be very careful with the honor of her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and the brothers and sisters of her husband, and his brother’s wife and sister’s husbands, and all of his relatives, for the honor of Hashem, that commanded her to be careful with honoring her husband. And this is all because honoring her husband’s relatives is work that gives satisfaction to her husband, and [thus] she finds favor in his eyes, and it will be counted as a mitzvah for her. And as we mentioned already, it isn’t necessary to hasten to love peace and pursue peace except for those from whom peace has escaped, and they have legitimate reasons to quarrel, on these falls this commandment to pursue peace to honor the Lord of Peace [see par. 9]. But the wife must be careful to not be careless, not to increase conversation and laughter and general lack of seriousness, and all the more so other forms of emotional closeness with her husband’s relatives. Rather, she should be honorable and modest in her in-laws’ home both at home and outside, and not to cause anyone to sin, for due to this sin women are cursed to die young, give birth to corrupt children, or have their sons and daughters die whilst still little. But the cautious merit to have descendants, proper and holy, who reach old age, joyful and glad.
