  1. 1

Pain - It is not proper to regret anything in the world except for “sorrow of heaven” [i.e. causing sorrow to Hashem, in an anthropomorphic sense, by not following his will], for due to the emptiness of the world there is no room for distress, for all is vanity [Ecclesiastes 1:2]. And we already have a parable about why the Holy One, blessed be He, does not pity the suffering of the righteous, whether others cause them pain or they are troubled over the circumstances of the time. This is similar to a father who watches his son as a baby, build a house out of small sticks and straw and be happy with it. Then a man comes and destroys the house. The child goes to his father and complains to him about the man and cries bitterly, and thinks that the father should kill that man, but the father laughs and does not pay attention, for he knows that in truth the pain of his child is vain and empty. Rather, this great distress is all due to [the child’s] limited knowledge and comprehension. For the pain that distresses man in his eyes in this world, is all vanity and striving after wind. And as at times the father supports his son to build these little houses, and buys things that bring joy to his children and gives him pleasure according to his [the child’s] own understanding, so too the Holy One, blessed be He, at times fulfills the will of man regarding matters of this world according to his [the person’s] understanding, because his soul desires them, in order to give him satisfaction. And if the Holy One, blessed be He, pains someone through afflictions to atone for his sins and he suffers and cries, the Holy One, blessed be He, does not heed his distress even though the Master of Mercy is merciful and gracious. After all, this is similar to a child whose mother is bathing him from his filth and he screams and cries; his mother is not distressed over this. And just as a physician makes difficult remedies, and at times cuts of a limb, and isn’t distressed over the pain, for he knows that this is for [the patient’s] pleasure and benefit, so too everything the Merciful One does, He does for the good. And a man who understands this ought not to be distressed at all.

  2. 2

And the book “Shnei Luchot Haberit [The Two Tablets of the Covenant]” recounts an incident regarding one pious person that entered a city and saw them troubled and embittered, and he became happy and cheerful and danced gleefully. And the people of the city asked him, “why are you happy?” He said to them, “why not be happy?” They said to him, “don’t you see everyone weeping in front of their tents? Why are you laughing while everyone is crying?” He said to them that this is like a parable: [if] one entered the house and found them [the inhabitants] sleeping and dreaming frightening dreams, and crying in their dreams, would the one who see this be distressed? For he knows this is nothing but a dream, and when the sleeper awakens he will be at ease. So too here, as all that causes distress in this world is like a dream, and I, being awake, know that all is vanity. Rather over the sorrow of heaven one is obligated to be distressed, and from this follows every kind of sorry that one out to feel over sins, iniquities, and transgressions. Not [grieving] over the harsh punishments that he himself receives, but rather that he caused sorrow and angered the King of Glory.

  3. 3

And thus it is proper to be distressed over the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash [temple] which was destroyed due to our sins, not because we are exiled, pained, and downtrodden, but rather due to the sorrow of heaven which is very great. And similarly over all types of afflictions, this should be one’s sorrow: that he causes anger and pain to the High and Exalted King, as is written (Isaiah 63:9): “in all their affliction he is afflicted”. And this is similar to a son who loves his father and angers him greatly until the father is forced to forsake his kindness and strike him with a great blow, for if the son is a loyal lover he wouldn’t worry about his blows at all, rather [he would worry] over the anger and distress of his father, and think, what will I do and how will I reconcile with my father so that he will not have sorrow and anger because of me. And even more so [we should be distressed due to] our knowledge that the mercy of Heaven is great, and that He bestows good without end, and great is His love for his people Israel. And his sorrow over their suffering is [also] vast, as is written (Exodus 19:21) “and many of them perish”. And our rabbis of blessed memory explain [the verse] (Mechilta on Parsha Yitro 84), that if even one falls, it is in his eyes as if many [have fallen]. If so, it is proper to be distressed over afflictions, on the one hand, since certainly our Father in Heaven is greatly angered, to the point that he was compelled to strike him with a great blow. And at the time when a person suffers, the Divine Presence suffers — what does the phrase say? “My head is heavy” etc. [Sanhedrin 46a]

  4. 4

And this is why one must feel genuine pain in their soul over the passing of the righteous, and over all the afflictions of the righteous that are wounded for our transgressions and broken for our sins. And because of [impending] evil the righteous are gathered, and the pain of heaven increases since the people of faith are gone, who come [to pray] in the power of their [good] deeds, etc. etc. And one must be distressed even over the righteous who died in antiquity, as is said (Zohar Part 3 Page 57), all that mourn over the deaths of the sons of Aaron on Yom Kippur, all their sins are forgiven. And this is the meaning of “the living shall take it to heart” [Ecclesiastes 7:2] — “if a flame has fallen among the cedars, what shall the wall-hyssop do?” [Moed Katan 25b]. And further one should take to heart that due to our great sins the faithful disappear from the children of man, and the pious are lost from the earth and men have no strength. And the Holy One, blessed be He, has no people in this world to love as in the days of old and in the years of antiquity. And this is because of our sins as is said in Gemara (Sanhedrin 11a): So-and-so Rabbi was worthy that the Divine Presence rest upon him, except that his generation was not worthy of it. And because of the decline of the generations, the Torah continues to diminish, progressively decreasing. Over this, it is fitting to feel bitterness and to grieve with a writing sorrow.

  5. 5

And as is written in Kabbalah, the sins of the wicked and the strengthening of the kelipot due to them [the wicked] causes confusion in the thoughts of the righteous, as they are unable to serve their creator completely and cleave to him as is proper. Therefore, our hearts should tremble over this to their very core, and we should weep bitterly over this great evil, and over the great evil and suffering that is caused above [in Heaven] due to our sins.

  6. 6

And behold, if a man is distressed over the vanities of this world, this [reflects] a deficiency of understanding, as we have written above in the name of the author of “Sefer HaBerit”. For either way, if it is something that has a remedy, he should do the remedy and he will be rescued, and if there is no remedy, what will [his distress] give him, what will it add, and what benefit is there in his sorrow? But he should be distressed over the sorrow of Heaven, [for] his distress makes an impression and bears fruit. It makes an impression, for this is the way of the world [i.e. proper conduct] and part of the perfection of one’s character traits, that a person’s disposition should be engaged with others. And he should be distressed, or at the very least display distress, and weep with those who weep. And how much disgrace comes to those who go to a funeral, and while the grave is prepared, the relatives of the deceased sit by the deceased with embittered spirits, and they [the funeral goers] engage excessively in drinking, laughter, and frivolity, at that very time and place in the presence of the deceased and his relatives. Certainly the matter is very disgraceful, bad, and bitter. And it is proper to protest against them if they will listen. Let this bad custom disappear, and let there not be such a thing among Israel.

  7. 7

And moreover, if one’s father, mother, or relatives are suffering, one is obligated to be distressed over them. And this is half of the consolation of a person: that he sees that others are also distressed over his pain. Along these lines, a person who is distressed over the sorrow of heaven, proportional to his suffering he brings satisfaction to his creator, and proportional to the pain is the reward. And it bears fruit, for proportional to his suffering he increasingly tries to straighten that which he has perverted and does everything in his power to lessen the suffering of his father in Heaven, just as a son who loves his father and sees him in pain, writhing in his suffering, whose flesh aches upon him [Job 14:22], and who endangers his life to save him from his suffering. And as the Kabbalists have already written, proportional to the pain and groaning and suffering that one experiences over his sins, thus so he increasingly purifies his soul. Behold, how precious indeed are the words of the wise man (Mivchar HaPeninim 44:46), who said to someone who he saw in distress, if your pain is about things in this world, the Holy One, blessed be He, will remove your distress, and if it is over the sorrow of Heaven, the Holy One, blessed be He, will add more and more sorrow to you.

  8. 8

And behold, the matter of distress is something entrusted to the heart. And the “nearby inclination” [i.e. the Yetzer Hara] reverses things and brings sorrow over the vanities of this world, while the sorrow of Heaven is discarded from the heart; [he is] neither pained nor aware. And the pure man should strengthen himself with pure thoughts to do each thing at its proper time in its proper manner, not replacing or substituting it, and he who comes to purify receives [heavenly] assistance (Shabbat 104a). And know that which is written in Ben Sira (Yevamot 63b) “do not suffer from tomorrow’s trouble etc.”. And since our days are a shadow on the earth [I Chronicles 29:15], what is the benefit to man in all his toils if his life will be [one of] sorrow? There is no good for man unless he is happy with his portion, trusts in the Name [i.e. Hashem], and does good [deeds].
