The Rambam, of blessed memory, wrote in Chapter 3 of Shemonah Perakim, and these are his words: “The ancients said that the soul has health and illness just as the body has health and illness. The health of the soul is that its disposition should be such… that it continually performs good and proper deeds. And its illness is that its disposition should be such… that it continually performs bad and disgraceful deeds. And just as those with bodily illnesses, when they become aware of their sickness, ask the physicians who inform them of what they must do and warn them accordingly…, so too, those whose souls are ill must seek out the sages, who are the physicians of the soul…, and they will heal them through the practices by which the dispositions of the soul are healed…”— so far are his words; see there. And likewise the Rambam wrote in Chapter 2 of Hilchot De’ot, relating the illness of the soul to the illness of the body; see there.
